Taylors Lazy Sunday Ground Coffee: Gentle, Not Weak

Most coffee on the shelf promises strength; Lazy Sunday promises the opposite and means it. A lighter roast is gentler in flavour but no weaker in caffeine, and it rewards a slower, mid-morning kind of pot.

Taylors Lazy Sunday Ground Coffee: Gentle, Not Weak, in summary: Gentle in flavour, though no weaker in caffeine, Lazy Sunday is the light, smooth end of the Taylors range. Brew it fuller and hotter than a dark roast, keep milk to a splash, and buy 400g for daily drinking.

Most coffee on the shelf promises strength; Lazy Sunday promises the opposite and means it. A lighter roast is gentler in flavour but no weaker in caffeine, and it rewards a slower, mid-morning kind of pot.

What a lighter roast keeps

Every roast is a trade-off. Carry it on and the bean's original sugars and acids give way to drier, bitter flavours; stop sooner, as here, and more of the coffee's own character survives. That is why Lazy Sunday smells nutty and softly sweet, not of toast or smoke, why its bitterness barely registers, and why the finish leaves the mouth comfortable rather than dry.

Taylors, the Harrogate family firm best known for Yorkshire Tea, sorts its coffees by roast depth rather than origin, which is the difference most people can actually taste. Lazy Sunday sits at the light, easy end; further along come the more intense Hot Lava Java and the dark Rich Italian. Anyone who reaches for dark roast by reflex should try a bag of this and see whether the reflex survives.

Brew it fuller and hotter

A thin, slightly sour cup almost always means under-extraction. Light roasts give up their sweetness reluctantly, so do not skimp: seven grams per mug, a brew of four whole minutes, and water between 94 and 96°C, a little hotter than suits a dark roast. This is ground coffee rather than instant, so reach for a cafetiere or filter.

Try it black or with a small splash first. The body is only medium: fine in a mug, but a big pour of milk swamps it, and the Rich Italian in the same range is the bag built for that. Leave the sugar out at first too. The sweetness is already there, coming from the bean rather than anything added, and sugar only dulls it.

200g or 400g, and when to drink it

Both bags hold the same coffee; the difference is how long an opened one stays at its best. Grinding gives coffee a huge surface area, so an opened pack smells strong at first and then fades quickly. The 400g bag makes about 57 mugs at seven grams each, which suits a house that drinks it every day; the 200g is the better choice for an occasional weekend pot. Close whichever you choose tightly after each scoop.

Make it the mid-morning pot rather than the wake-up one. Early on, when you want a jolt, a light roast can seem weak; a few hours later its soft, nutty sweetness has room to show. It suits people who drink coffee because they like it, and unhurried weekend breakfasts.

FAQ

Is light roast coffee weaker? In flavour intensity, yes; in caffeine, no. Roast colour is not a guide to how much caffeine is in the cup.

Why does my Lazy Sunday taste thin or sour? It is under-extracted. Use seven grams a mug, a full four minutes and water between 94 and 96°C.

Should I buy the 200g or the 400g bag? The 400g suits daily drinking at about 57 mugs; the 200g is better if you brew now and then, since opened ground coffee fades.

Can I take Lazy Sunday with milk? A splash suits it. A lot of milk swamps a light roast; Rich Italian is the Taylors coffee built for that.

Does Lazy Sunday need sugar? Try it without first. The sweetness comes from the bean, and sugar tends to dull it.

Curator's note: Brew a pot mid-morning, once the rush is over, and drink it black. That is when this coffee makes its case. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
