The name promises a soft, doughy texture, which a crisp wafer bar can never give you. What it really signals is a flavour direction in the coating, and once you read it that way the bar makes sense.
Same wafer, a different coating
Take the flavour away and what is left is the usual two-finger construction: wafer sheets stacked with a filling, then sealed in a coating that gives the bar its shine, its snap and most of its taste. The wafer stays dry and airy, which is why a bar this sweet still eats quickly. Only the coating moves, and it moves towards brown sugar, butter and vanilla.
Cocoa is deliberately kept in the background, so the bar leans towards a sweet rather than a chocolate bar. Lovers of vanilla-led sweets will be pleased; anyone who expects real cocoa depth will not. If you are buying for someone else, check they meant this and not the milk chocolate two-finger we also stock.
When the snap comes and goes
The snap belongs to the coating, not the wafer, so temperature decides it. A cool bar breaks cleanly; a warm one bends. Warmth also lifts the vanilla and brown sugar, so a bar at room temperature smells stronger than one straight from the fridge, yet that same heat is what takes the snap away. A cool cupboard is the sensible compromise between aroma and crunch.
Eight wrapped bars come in the 165.6g outer, about 20.7g each, which makes this a box for the desk drawer rather than the coffee table. We would keep it for the mid-afternoon lull rather than after dinner, since it has no dry or bitter edge to round off a meal, and it is sweet enough that one bar at a sitting is plenty.
Answering the sugar from the cup
Tannin is what answers a sweet vanilla coating, and a weak, under-brewed tea simply does not have enough. Use one bag per 200ml, let it brew for four minutes rather than three, and add only a small splash of milk. That extra minute is what gives the cup enough grip to stand up to the coating instead of vanishing beside it.
Coffee may suit it even better: a short black one, whose roast bitterness meets the sugar head on. What does not work is hot chocolate, which only stacks sweetness on sweetness. A vanilla redbush may sound like a natural match, but it echoes the coating rather than balancing it, so keep that for someone who wants the whole break to taste of pudding.

FAQ
Does a cookie dough KitKat taste like raw cookie dough? Not in texture, because the wafer stays crisp. The name points to the flavour of the coating: brown sugar, butter and vanilla, sweeter than the standard bar.
Is it sweeter than the milk chocolate two-finger? Yes, noticeably, and with far less cocoa depth. The wafer and the bar size are the same.
How many bars come in the pack? Eight individually wrapped bars, 165.6g in total, which is about 20.7g a bar by our sums.
What tea stands up to it? A strong everyday black blend brewed for four minutes with just a small splash of milk. A short black coffee works just as well.
Why does my bar bend instead of snapping? It is warm. The snap comes from the coating, so give it a spell somewhere cool before eating.
Curator's note: One bar, mid-afternoon, with a tea brewed a minute longer than usual. Take it as a vanilla sweet on a crisp wafer and it does its job well. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
