Kenco Latte Sachets: Latte or Cappuccino, and Easy Upgrades

Kenco Latte Sachets: Latte or Cappuccino, and Easy Upgrades, in summary: Unflavoured but sweetened, these eight latte sachets need nothing but hot water. It is softer and less foamy than a cappuccino sachet, and the easiest one to adapt: hot milk, cocoa or syrup all take it somewhere new.

A plain sachet has nowhere to hide: with no caramel or chocolate in front, the milk leads and the coffee shows plainly beneath it. That is exactly why it is the handiest box to keep: it is a base you can build on.

Latte or cappuccino: what changes

Think of the two cafe drinks and shrink them to fit a sachet. A latte leans on liquid milk with just a thin layer of foam, giving a softer, rounder mouthful, while a cappuccino sits under a thicker cap of foam and tastes lighter for it. Pick Kenco's Original Cappuccino if a foam hat is what you enjoy, and this box when you would rather the milk was in the drink than perched on it.

It is sweetened, and Kenco's own range gives that away: there is a cappuccino labelled unsweetened, which would be a pointless label if the standard sachets were not sweet already. Each sachet weighs 16.3g, eight to a box of 130.4g, and one sachet makes one mug, so the box is sized for a trip or a desk rather than a household.

Water, milk and the order of things

Powdered milk is the fussy part of the sachet. A kettle at full boil scalds it, and the cooked, tinny note that follows will not stir out, so let the kettle settle for about a minute before pouring. Put the powder in first, wet it with a little water and stir it smooth, then top up; a brisk stir at the end, or a pour from a little height, gives a better head.

No fresh milk is needed, because the powder carries its own, which is why the box lives happily without a fridge. Where you do have one, swapping part of the water for hot milk makes a noticeably fuller drink. Treat that as a bonus rather than a rule; it is simply the one change that brings a sachet latte closest to a cafe cup.

Taking a plain latte somewhere else

Because nothing is flavoured, the plain sachet takes additions well. A spoonful of cocoa turns it into a rough mocha, and a little syrup gives you your own version of the flavoured boxes. Anyone who wants it sweeter can add sugar, and anyone who finds it mild can stir in a pinch of plain instant. None of that works the other way round, since there is no taking caramel out of a caramel sachet.

It travels well, too. A box slips into the side of a bag or sits in a hotel room with a kettle and no fridge, and it makes arrival day at a rented cottage a little easier. Eight sachets make a sensible travelling size, and every sachet makes an identical mug, something a jar and a random carton of milk rarely manage. For a daily habit at home, Kenco's Classic Latte comes in a box of twenty.

FAQ

How does the latte sachet differ from the cappuccino? The latte is milk-forward with little foam; the cappuccino carries a thicker head and tastes lighter beneath it.

Is the plain Kenco latte sweetened? Yes. Kenco marks one of its cappuccinos as unsweetened, a label that only makes sense if the regular sachets carry sugar.

Does the latte sachet need fresh milk? No, the milk is in the powder. Swapping some of the water for hot milk gives a fuller drink if you have it.

What water temperature is best? Around 90 degrees Celsius, which means giving the kettle about a minute after it clicks so the milk powder does not scald.

Does it contain milk? Yes, per the published ingredient information, so it is not for a dairy-free diet.

Curator's note: A box in the suitcase is our answer to the first morning somewhere new, and a spoonful of cocoa from the holiday cupboard turns it into a small treat. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
