Everything useful about a Blue Riband comes back to one fact: a wafer is mostly air, and the chocolate coating is what stops it going soft. Knowing that tells you how to store the box, whether to dunk and why twelve wrappers beat one big packet.
A bar that is mostly air
A chocolate wafer bar is cleverer than it looks. The thin, crisp wafer sheets are mostly air, a cream filling glues them into a solid bar, and a chocolate coating seals the whole thing. That coating has three jobs at once: it gives the bar its chocolate flavour, binds the layers into one piece and seals the wafer off from the air.
Take the coating away and the wafer would go soft in an afternoon. That is why the coating, not the box, decides how long a bar stays good. It is also why the flavour lingers: the coating starts to melt at body temperature, so the taste comes through once in your fingers and again on the tongue. It is firmly sweet, and it is confectionery first and a biscuit second.
Why buy twelve
Blue Riband is also sold in six-bar packs, and this box simply holds twice as many: twelve individually wrapped bars, 216g in all. If the household gets through them steadily, the bigger box is the sensible size. Each wrapper is the real protection, so opening the outer box does nothing to the bars still inside, and a single bar can go into a lunchbox, a bag or a drawer.
Its siblings are the six-bar Original, the Vanilla White and the Milk Chocolate Hazelnut, so this box is the one to pick when the plain milk chocolate bar is the household favourite and six never lasts the week. The hazelnut bar wears a very similar wrapper, so check which one you are holding if nuts matter in your house, and read the current pack for the full allergen list.
Storage mistakes to avoid
Leave the bars in their wrappers. Tipping them loose into a tin makes things worse, not better: the wrappers already keep air out, and loose bars scuff each other's coating. Keep the box somewhere cool, away from a warm car or a sunny windowsill, because chocolate softens long before the wafer notices. A pale grey film after a warm spell is bloom, a surface change that looks dull but is fine to eat.
Do not try the oven trick that revives soft crackers; a few minutes of heat will melt the chocolate off, and it will not set back the way it was. As for dunking, people genuinely disagree. You have about two seconds before the coating melts and the wafer collapses, so hold the end and commit, or do the sensible thing and eat it beside a strong black tea with milk.

FAQ
How many bars are in the Blue Riband twelve-pack? Twelve individually wrapped bars, 216g in the box, which is twice the count of the six-bar packs.
Should I keep wafer bars in a tin? No. The wrappers protect them better, and loose bars rub against each other and scuff the coating.
What is the grey film on my chocolate wafer? Bloom, caused by a warm spell. It only affects the surface, so you can still eat the bar, but it will look dull and break less crisply.
Can you dunk a Blue Riband? Briefly, if you must. The coating melts and the wafer gives way in about two seconds.
Can I refresh a soft bar in the oven? No. Heat melts the chocolate coating off the wafer, and it will not set again as it was.
Curator's note: Keep the box in the coolest cupboard you have and take one bar at a time. A strong mug of tea with milk does the rest. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
