The Story Behind The Box
It is the house's answer to the builder's mug: nothing scented, nothing delicate, just a strong blend in a bag at a dose that stands up to milk.
Everything beyond that belongs to the carton. We would rather send you to the pack than print a guess. What we can tell you is the arithmetic, because it comes off the pack format: 348g across 120 bags, 2.9g a bag, one bag a mug, 120 mugs.
The bag material is why this version sits beside the ordinary box. Conventional tea bags are usually heat-sealed with a small amount of plastic; a plant-based bag is sealed without it. Whether yours is home compostable or only industrially compostable is stated on the carton, and those are not the same thing.

The Three Minute Mug
The everyday build, and the one rule that keeps a heavy bag on the right side of harsh.
- 1 Everyday tea bag
- 200 to 250ml water at 100 degrees
- A splash of milk
- Pour water straight off the boil onto the bag in the mug.
- Leave it three minutes; two if you take it weak, four if you take it strong.
- Press the bag once against the side and lift it out.
- Add the milk last, once the bag is gone.
What you'll end up with: A brisk, full-bodied mug that still tastes of tea after a generous splash, which is the whole point of the heavier bag.
The Pot For Four
Same ratio as the mug, and why every bag comes out before it reaches the table.

- 750ml water at 100 degrees
- Milk, in a jug
- Warm the pot with a splash from the kettle and tip it out.
- Brew three bags in 750ml with the lid on for three minutes.
- Remove all three bags before the pot leaves the kitchen.
- Serve with the milk in a jug so everybody takes their own.
What you'll end up with: A pot that is as drinkable in the fourth cup as the first, instead of one that has stewed itself on the way through.
Builder's Strength
Two heavy bags in one mug, for the people who find one is never enough.
- 2 Everyday tea bags
- 250ml water at 100 degrees
- Milk, generously
- Sugar, if that is how you take it
- Brew two bags in 250ml for four minutes, no longer.
- Squeeze both bags against the side and take them out.
- Add milk until the colour is right, which is the only measure anyone actually uses.
- Stir in sugar if you take it, while it is still properly hot.
What you'll end up with: A very strong mug indeed. Five and a half grams of leaf in one cup is more than most people brew, so stop at four minutes rather than going longer.
Overnight Cold Brew
The way to make a plain strong blend into a smooth iced tea rather than a blunt one.
- 4 Everyday tea bags
- 1 litre cold water
- 1 lemon, sliced
- Ice to serve
- Drop four bags into a litre jug of cold water.
- Chill for eight hours or overnight.
- Lift the bags out without squeezing them, which is what turns cold brew cloudy.
- Serve over plenty of ice with lemon.
What you'll end up with: A clear, soft iced tea with almost none of the astringency the hot cup has, and no need for sugar to cover it.
Stovetop Masala Chai
A heavy everyday bag is exactly the right tea for boiling in milk, which a delicate one is not.
- 3 Everyday tea bags
- 250ml water
- 250ml whole milk
- •4 green cardamom pods, crushed
- •A thumb of fresh ginger, sliced
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- Simmer the cardamom and ginger in 250ml of water for five minutes.
- Add the three tea bags and simmer another two minutes.
- Pour in the milk with the sugar and bring it back up, without letting it boil over.
- Strain into cups, pressing the bags against the sieve.
What you'll end up with: A proper stovetop chai. The tea has to be strong enough to be heard over the milk and the spice, and a 2.9g bag is.
Tea-Brined Roast Chicken
Tannin does something to poultry that salt alone cannot, and a strong plain blend is the one to use.
- 6 Everyday tea bags
- 1 litre water at 100 degrees
- •60g fine salt
- •2 tablespoons soft brown sugar
- •1 litre cold water
- Brew six bags in a litre of just-boiled water for ten minutes, very strong.
- Dissolve the salt and sugar in the hot tea, then take the bags out.
- Top up with a litre of cold water and cool the brine completely before it meets the bird.
- Brine the chicken overnight in the fridge, then drain, pat dry and roast as usual.
What you'll end up with: A bird that browns deeper and tastes rounder than a plain salt brine gives you. Cool the brine fully first; warm brine on raw chicken is a food safety problem, not a shortcut.
