Pukka recertified as a B Corp with a meaningfully higher score than last cycle: 132 vs 118. They scored highest in the Workers category: paid living wage across all operations, expanded parental leave, mental health budget for every staff member.

The B Corp threshold is 80 out of a possible 200, scored across five categories: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, Customers. Anything above 110 is genuinely strong. 132 puts Pukka in the upper tercile of UK certified B Corps and well above the global median of around 92. The jump from 118 to 132 was driven mostly by Workers, where they picked up double digit points.

Pukka was acquired by Unilever in 2017, then sold to CVC Capital Partners as part of the Ekaterra spin out in 2022. Multinational ownership has been a B Corp lightning rod since Ben and Jerry's in 2000. The argument for keeping certified is that the brand keeps its own operating standards under the new owner. The argument against is that profit pressure eventually breaks them. B Lab has been tightening the rules on parent company governance; Pukka recertified under the updated standards.

The Workers score lift is interesting because it is the category that costs the most to improve. Living wage as a baseline rather than a perk. Paid parental leave for any caregiver, not just birthing parents. A mental health budget per employee that can be spent on therapy or coaching without HR involvement. None of those are cheap, and the increase indicates the parent has not pulled the lever yet.

For a customer choosing between Pukka and a non certified brand at the same shelf price: B Corp is one signal among many. It does not guarantee taste, freshness or value. It does mean the supply chain has been audited against a published standard and the company has put numbers behind its sustainability claims. We stock a lot of Pukka. The recertification is one reason we keep doing so.
