LCurator note · Starbucks
Anyone hoping to taste the roast should put this box straight back. Caramel is the subject of the drink and the coffee is the bass line under it, which is exactly what the name promises. Taken for what it is, it behaves: the caramel holds all the way down instead of fading after two mouthfuls, and the milk stays soft rather than turning claggy. It belongs to the afternoon rather than to seven in the morning, and it is one of the few sweet pods that survives being brewed short over a full glass of ice. Check the line on the box, not the logo, because the same recipe is sold for machines this will not fit.

About this product

Starbucks Caramel Macchiato By Nescafe Dolce Gusto, in brief.

Starbucks Caramel Macchiato by Nescafe Dolce Gusto is the coffee shop caramel order licensed into the Dolce Gusto capsule system: milk laid down first, coffee poured through it, and the caramel running under the whole drink rather than stirred in at the end.

Twelve pods, six servings, because this is a two capsule build. Contains milk, so not suitable for vegans, and it fits Nescafe Dolce Gusto machines only even though Starbucks pods exist for other systems. Picked into the Teas.co.uk selection as the dessert end of the pod shelf, for the afternoon rather than the morning.

Starbucks Caramel Macchiato by Nescafe Dolce Gusto is the Starbucks coffee shop order licensed into the Dolce Gusto capsule system. Twelve pods, six servings: this is a two capsule build, one milk capsule and one coffee capsule per finished drink, so the box makes half as many cups as it holds pods.

A caramel macchiato is a layered drink rather than a mixed one. Milk goes in first, the coffee is poured through it, and the caramel note runs underneath the whole thing rather than sitting on top as a syrup you stir in afterwards. That is what separates it from a plain latte with caramel added at the counter, and it is why the capsule version is built in two stages rather than dosed into one pod.

Curator’s notes

Read the full write-up

This is a sweet drink and it does not pretend otherwise. It is the pod to reach for if what you actually want in the afternoon is something closer to a pudding than to a coffee, and it is a poor choice if you want to taste the roast. Bought as what it is, it does the job well: the caramel is present the whole way down rather than fading after two mouthfuls, and the milk carries it without turning claggy.

Where this sits in the Starbucks and Dolce Gusto ranges

Starbucks licenses its recipes into several capsule systems, and the system matters more than the badge. This one is built for Nescafe Dolce Gusto machines and will not fit a Nespresso, a Tassimo or a Lavazza A Modo Mio. There are Starbucks pods for those systems too, which is exactly why it is worth checking the line on the box rather than the logo before you buy.

Within the Dolce Gusto range this is a flavoured milk drink, so it sits alongside the cappuccino and latte macchiato builds rather than the black americano pods. All three of those are two capsule drinks. The unflavoured ones let the roast through; this one puts caramel in front of it deliberately. If you keep a mixed box in the cupboard, this is the one people reach for mid afternoon rather than at seven in the morning.

The twelve pod, six serving count is smaller than the standard Dolce Gusto milk packs, which is worth knowing if you are comparing shelf prices. Compare on cost per finished drink. A box of twelve that makes six is not the same purchase as a box of sixteen that makes eight.

How Starbucks Caramel Macchiato By Nescafe Dolce Gusto, Coffee (6 Servings), 12 Pods compares

  • Against the plain Dolce Gusto cappuccino: the cappuccino is the coffee drink with a foam cap and no added flavour; this is the sweet one. If you want to taste the coffee, the cappuccino is the better pod. If you want caramel, nothing unflavoured is going to satisfy you.
  • Against a coffee shop caramel macchiato: the capsule version is consistent and a fraction of the cost, and it does not come with a queue. What it does not give you is the option to ask for it less sweet, half the syrup or an extra shot. The pod makes one drink and that is the one you get.

Getting the best out of it

A sweet drink has a narrower margin for error than a plain one, because sugar amplifies whatever else goes wrong. Brew it long and it reads watery and cloying at the same time, which is the worst of both. Brew it into a cold cup and the caramel turns dull before you have finished it.

The standard serve

  • Cup:A tall glass or a standard mug. A macchiato is meant to be seen in layers, so glass is worth it once.

  • Warm it:Run hot water through the cup and tip it out. Sweet milk drinks go dull faster than black coffee when they lose heat.

  • Order:Milk capsule first, coffee capsule second, straight through the middle of it. That is where the layering comes from.

  • Fill lines:Brew both to their marked lines as the baseline. This pod is easier to ruin by over running it than by stopping short.

The less sweet version

  • Short milk:Stop the milk capsule a little before its line. Less volume against the same coffee moves the balance back towards the roast.

  • Full coffee:Run the coffee capsule to its full mark. This is the only lever you have for cutting the sweetness without adding anything.

  • Salt:A pinch of flaky salt on top reads as caramel rather than as salt, and it takes the edge off the sugar. Add it at the end.

Practical notes on the pack

  • Yield: 12 pods, 6 servings. Two capsules per finished drink, one milk and one coffee.
  • Machine fit: Nescafe Dolce Gusto machines only. The Starbucks name also appears on pods for other systems, so check the line rather than the logo.
  • Contains milk: not suitable for vegans or anyone avoiding dairy.
  • Sweetness: This is a sweet drink by design. If you are watching sugar, the nutrition panel on the pack is the figure to read before you commit to a box.
  • Storage: Cool, dry and dark. The capsules are individually sealed, so the carton is there to protect them from heat and crushing.
  • Iced: One of the better pods in the range over ice, because the caramel survives dilution better than a plain roast does. Brew both capsules short over a full glass.

Ingredients, allergens and storage

What is in it:two sealed single serve capsules per drink, one carrying the milk element and one carrying the coffee with the caramel character the product name declares. The full ingredient list is printed on the pack.

Ingredients and dietary suitability: Check the current UK pack before purchase; formulations and allergen advice can change.

Allergen note:contains milk.

Not suitable for vegans:and not suitable for anyone with a milk allergy or avoiding dairy.

Sugars: the nutrition panel on your pack is the number to use.

Caffeine and sensitivity:Coffee is a stimulant. If you are sensitive to caffeine, pregnant, or following medical advice on your intake, treat this as you would any other caffeinated coffee and follow the guidance you have been given.

Keep capsules out of reach of children:and do not open or refill them. They are sealed and under pressure while the machine is running.

How does it compare

vs Nescafe Dolce Gusto CappuccinoThe unflavoured two capsule build in the same system. Pick it over this one if you want to taste the coffee rather than the caramel.
vs Starbucks Caffe Latte by Dolce GustoSame brand and system, no caramel. The plain milk drink for anyone who wants the Starbucks recipe without the sweetness.

Starbucks Caramel Macchiato By Nescafe Dolce Gusto, Coffee (6 Servings), 12 Pods arrives finished, so the builds below are about proportion, temperature and what to do with the spare coffee capsules. Five serves, from the standard layered cup to an iced version and a caramel affogato.

Made with this tea

The Layered Macchiato

The drink the pod was designed to make, built so you can see it.

3 min 1 tall glass Easy
You'll need
  • 1 Caramel Macchiato milk capsule
  • 1 Caramel Macchiato coffee capsule
  • A tall heatproof glass
Method
  1. Warm the glass with hot water and tip it out.
  2. Brew the milk capsule first, to its marked line.
  3. Brew the coffee capsule straight down through the middle of it.
  4. Leave it a moment before stirring, or do not stir it at all.

What you'll end up with: The layers the drink is named for, and the caramel present all the way down.

The Less Sweet Build

Short milk, full coffee, for when the standard version is too much.

3 min 1 cup Easy
You'll need
  • 1 milk capsule
  • 1 coffee capsule
  • A pinch of flaky salt
Method
  1. Stop the milk capsule a little before its fill line.
  2. Run the coffee capsule to its full mark.
  3. Finish with a pinch of flaky salt on top, added at the end.
  4. The salt reads as caramel rather than as salt and takes the edge off the sugar.

What you'll end up with: The same drink with the roast further forward and the sweetness pulled back.

Iced Caramel Macchiato
4 min 1 tall glass Easy
You'll need
  • 1 milk capsule
  • 1 coffee capsule
  • A glass filled to the top with ice
Method
  1. Fill the glass with ice properly, not half way.
  2. Brew the milk capsule short over the ice, then the coffee capsule short on top.
  3. Stir once, or leave it layered.

What you'll end up with: A cold caramel drink that still tastes of caramel once the ice has moved.

Caramel Affogato

The best use for an odd coffee capsule.

2 min 1 bowl Easy
You'll need
  • 1 coffee capsule
  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • Flaky salt, optional
Method
  1. Put two scoops of vanilla ice cream in a small bowl.
  2. Brew the coffee capsule short, straight over the ice cream.
  3. Finish with a few flakes of salt if you have them.
  4. Eat immediately, while half of it is still frozen.

What you'll end up with: A pudding in two minutes, and the box stays balanced.

Caramel Coffee Pour For Two

Two drinks built in a jug and chilled rather than diluted.

15 min 2 glasses Easy
You'll need
  • 2 milk capsules
  • 2 coffee capsules
  • A jug
  • Ice
Method
  1. Brew all four capsules into a jug, milk capsules first, each stopped slightly short.
  2. Chill the jug for ten minutes in the fridge.
  3. Pour over two glasses of ice and serve.
  4. Chilling before it meets the ice is what stops it tasting watered down.

What you'll end up with: Two cold caramel coffees that have kept their strength.

Inside the pack

IngredientProportionWhat it brings
Coffee (coffee capsule)Not published as a percentageThe base note under the caramel. Set deliberately well back, which is what makes this a flavoured drink rather than a coffee with syrup on it.
Caramel characterNot published as a percentageThe headline note declared in the product name. It runs through the whole drink rather than sitting on top, which is the difference between this and syrup added at the cup.
Milk element (milk capsule)Not published as a percentageBody, sweetness and the layer the coffee is poured through. It is also the reason this build is not suitable for vegans.
Water (added by the machine)The bulk of the finished cupSets the length of the drink. This pod is easier to spoil by over running it than by stopping short, because dilution makes a sweet drink read watery and cloying at once.

Pack: Starbucks Caramel Macchiato By Nescafe Dolce Gusto, Coffee (6 Servings), 12 Pods; GTIN 07613036926997; 12 single serve capsules giving 6 cups, two pods per finished drink. Contains milk. Caffeinated. Sweetened; read the nutrition panel for sugars. Best before date printed on the pack.

Percentages and sugar figures are not published for these capsules and we have not invented any. Because the drink contains a milk element and is sweetened, it carries real calories; the nutrition panel on your pack is the figure to use, and anything added at the cup changes it again.

Sourcing & blend. Starbucks Caramel Macchiato By Nescafe Dolce Gusto, Coffee (6 Servings), 12 Pods is a Starbucks recipe produced for the Nescafe Dolce Gusto capsule system, which is why the box carries both names. The Starbucks side of the arrangement is the recipe and the flavour target; the Dolce Gusto side is the capsule format and the machine it runs in. That is also why a Starbucks pod made for a different system will not fit this one. Splitting the drink across two sealed capsules lets the milk be dosed for texture and the coffee for extraction without either compromising the other, which is how a layered drink survives being made by a machine. For the certifications carried by the box in your hand, read the current pack rather than a description written earlier.

What is in Starbucks Caramel Macchiato By Nescafe Dolce Gusto, Coffee (6 Servings), 12 Pods, and what is not:

  • In: a coffee capsule carrying the caramel character and a separate milk capsule, both used for one finished drink.
  • Contains milk: not suitable for vegans, and not suitable for anyone with a milk allergy or avoiding dairy.
  • Two capsules per cup: 12 pods, 6 servings. Compare this pack on cost per drink, not cost per pod.
  • Machine note: fits Nescafe Dolce Gusto machines only, not other systems that also carry Starbucks pods. Capsules are not refillable and should not be opened.
Formulations change; the current UK pack is always the final word on ingredients and allergens.
Product questions

Asked about this product

Because this is a two capsule build. Every finished caramel macchiato uses one milk capsule and one coffee capsule, so twelve pods give six servings, which is what the front of the box states. When you are comparing pod boxes on a shelf, compare cost per finished drink rather than cost per pod.
