Starbucks By Nespresso Italian Roast, 10 Capsules 56g
Nothing in here is delicate, so a machine overdue a descale or a tank filled yesterday makes very little difference to what lands in the cup. It is smoke and caramelised sugar either way. Which also settles who it is for. Anyone still working out whether they like dark coffee should not be finding out on this one, because it sits at the far end of the scale rather than the middle of it. These belong to the Nespresso Original line, and a Vertuo will not run them.
Starbucks By Nespresso Italian Roast, in brief.
Starbucks By Nespresso Italian Roast, 10 Capsules 56g is the deepest roast in the Starbucks capsule range. Italian roast names a roast level rather than a country, and it sits at the dark end of the scale that runs from blonde through medium and dark. Picked into the Teas.co.uk selection for anyone who wants the roast to be the flavour.
Machine check: these are Nespresso Original capsules. They are not Vertuo capsules and will not work in a Vertuo, which takes only its own barcoded capsule.
Heavy, smoky and with effectively no acidity left, built to be unmistakable in a short cup and to survive sugar. Stop the shot a little short; everything past 40ml is the smoky tail. The shelf price moves about between retailers, so the price in your basket is the price.
The style is named after a drinking culture rather than a farming one. Espresso as Italy developed it is short, taken standing at a bar, often with sugar stirred in, and frequently several times a day. A roast built for that is a roast built to be unmistakable in 30ml and to survive sugar without vanishing. That is a genuinely different design brief from a coffee meant to be sipped black and analysed, and it explains most of what this capsule does.

The Story Behind Starbucks by Nespresso
Starbucks by Nespresso is the Starbucks range made for the Nespresso Original system rather than a third-party capsule that happens to fit it, which is why the box carries both names. The practical difference for a customer is that there is no compatibility question to weigh: the capsule is made for the machine, and the roast names on the front are the same ones used on the high street, so you can pick by the drink you already order rather than by a number on a scale.
About compatibility: these are Nespresso Original capsules. They are not Vertuo capsules and will not work in a Vertuo machine, which reads a barcode on the rim of its own capsule and takes nothing else. The two systems share a brand name and almost nothing else, and it catches people out regularly, so check which machine you own before ordering.
The price in your basket at checkout is the price you pay, and it is the only figure we will stand behind.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and your local-authority guidance. Aluminium capsules are widely recyclable, but almost never through the ordinary kerbside bin with the coffee grounds still inside them, and the carton and the capsules usually take different routes.
Why Anyone Roasts This Far
Roasting is a trade between origin character and roast character, and the further you go the more the second replaces the first. At a light roast you taste the farm; at this depth you taste the roaster. Some people read that as a loss, and for a good single origin it usually is. For an espresso blend drunk short, several times a day, with sugar or under milk, it is a deliberate choice: consistency, weight and a flavour that lands in a single mouthful.
The risk is obvious and worth naming. Past caramelisation, sugars carbonise, and carbonised sugar tastes of ash and does not leave the mouth. A deep roast delivers its bitterness late and clears; a burnt one coats the tongue and stays. This capsule is smokier than the Dark Espresso Roast beside it in the range, which is the whole reason to choose it, and it still finishes rather than lingering. If dark cups usually read ashy to you, buy the Dark Espresso Roast instead and come back to this one later.
Getting A Consistent Cup
- Descale on schedule: scale lowers the water temperature at the group more than it restricts the flow, so a scaled machine under-extracts quietly rather than failing loudly.
- Keep the capsules sealed: leave them in the carton until the moment of use; the individual seal is the entire preservation system.
- Empty the capsule bin: a full bin is the most common reason a capsule fails to seat and pierce cleanly.
- Filtered water: in a hard-water area a filter jug does more for the cup than changing capsules will.
- Do not re-run a used capsule: the second pass gives you the bitter tail of the first extraction and nothing else.
- Caffeine note: a regular caffeinated coffee. A darker roast is not a stronger caffeine dose, however it tastes.
- Stop it short: the single change that most improves a very dark capsule is pulling less water through it.
- Best with: a square of dark chocolate, a biscotti, or a quarter teaspoon of sugar and nothing else.

The story behind Starbucks
Starbucks needs no introduction. Their at-home retail range covers the cafe-style favourites: Toffee Nut Latte sachets, instant coffee, and the wider iced and hot drink format. Particularly strong on flavoured latte sachets.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and your local-authority guidance. Aluminium capsules are widely recyclable, but almost never through the ordinary kerbside bin with the coffee grounds still inside them, and the carton and the capsules usually take different routes.

The taste profile
How does it compare
The machine does the extraction, so the variables left to you are the button, the cup and the state of the machine. A very dark roast is forgiving of most of them and unforgiving of one: length.
The Straight Espresso
The Milk Build
Made with this tea
The Short Espresso
How to make The Short Espresso with Starbucks Italian Roast.
- 1 Starbucks Italian Roast capsule
- Fresh water in the machine tank
- A Nespresso Original machine
- A warmed demitasse
- Rinse a blank shot of hot water into the cup to warm it, and tip it out.
- Refill the tank with fresh water rather than topping it up.
- Pull the capsule on the espresso setting and stop it a touch early if your machine allows.
- Drink it promptly, before the cup cools and the smoke gathers.
What you'll end up with: The dense sweet middle of the extraction without the smoky tail. Stopping short is the single change that most improves a very dark capsule.
Caffe Con Zucchero
How to make Caffe Con Zucchero with Starbucks Italian Roast.
- 1 Starbucks Italian Roast capsule
- A quarter teaspoon of sugar
- A warmed demitasse
- A small spoon
- Put the sugar in the warmed cup before the coffee.
- Pull the capsule on the espresso setting straight over it.
- Stir once, briefly, without breaking all the crema.
- Drink standing up, the way the style was designed for.
What you'll end up with: Sugar is not cheating here. The caramelised sweetness is already in the coffee; a quarter teaspoon makes it legible under the smoke.
Espresso Macchiato
How to make an Espresso Macchiato with Starbucks Italian Roast.
- 1 Starbucks Italian Roast capsule
- A tablespoon of foamed milk
- A thermometer, or a steady hand
- A warmed demitasse
- Pull the capsule on the espresso setting into the warmed cup.
- Steam a small jug of milk to about 60°C and let it settle.
- Spoon a tablespoon of the foam onto the shot.
- Serve straight away, without stirring.
What you'll end up with: The traditional build and the one that suits this roast best. Enough milk to soften the edge, not enough to bury the coffee.
Iced Italian Roast
How to make an Iced Italian Roast with Starbucks Italian Roast.
- 1 Starbucks Italian Roast capsule
- A tall glass of ice
- 120ml cold water
- Sugar to taste, optional
- Dissolve any sugar in a splash of hot water first, before the ice goes in.
- Fill the glass with ice and pour in 120ml of cold water.
- Pull the capsule short straight over the top.
- Stir once and drink before the ice thins it.
What you'll end up with: Cold water rather than milk suits the smoky register. Sugar has to go in before the ice or it will sit at the bottom.
Affogato
How to make an Affogato with Starbucks Italian Roast.
- 1 Starbucks Italian Roast capsule
- 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream
- A small cold bowl
- A biscotti on the side, optional
- Scoop the ice cream into a cold bowl and return it to the freezer while the machine warms.
- Pull the capsule short, straight over the ice cream.
- Serve with a biscotti if you want something to break the sweetness.
- Eat immediately, before the whole thing turns to soup.
What you'll end up with: The one place a very dark roast is unambiguously the right choice. Vanilla sugar and smoke balance each other properly.
Brewing the perfect cup
Inside the pack
| Component | Proportion | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Roasted ground coffee | the entire contents | The whole product. Nothing is added: no flavouring, no sweetener, no preservative. At this roast depth the roast itself is the flavour. |
| Roast level | Italian, the deepest in the range | A roasting term rather than an origin. Taken to the dark end of the standard scale, past the caramelised toffee register and into smoke. |
| Grind and dose | set for an espresso | Chosen for a short extraction. Everything past about 40ml is the drying tail, and at this depth the tail is smoky, so stopping short suits it. |
| Aluminium capsule | 10 per carton | An absolute barrier to oxygen and light, and rigid enough to hold its shape under nine bars so the water passes through the bed evenly rather than round the edge. |
| Pack contents | 10 capsules, 56g net | Ten short shots, about 5.6g of coffee in each. |
Pack: Starbucks By Nespresso Italian Roast, 10 Capsules 56g; caffeinated coffee capsules for Nespresso Original machines. Go by the best before date printed on the pack.
Characterising components shown; the coffee is the entire contents and the capsule is the packaging. The 56g figure is the net weight of the coffee across the ten capsules, about 5.6 grams each, rather than the weight of a single capsule.
Sourcing & blend. Starbucks by Nespresso is the Starbucks range made for the Nespresso Original system rather than a third-party capsule that happens to fit it, which is why the box carries both names. Italian roast is a roasting term used across the industry for one of the darkest standard levels, and the style is named after the way espresso is drunk in Italy rather than after where the beans grew: short, often with sugar, several times a day. A roast built for that has to be unmistakable in a small cup, which is a different design brief from a coffee meant to be sipped black and analysed.
What's in Starbucks Italian Roast, and what isn't:
- In: roasted ground coffee in a sealed aluminium capsule, and nothing else.
- Not from Italy: the name describes the roast level, not the origin. The bean origins are printed on the current pack.
- No artificial colours, flavourings, sweeteners or preservatives: the smoky, sweet register is the roast rather than an addition.
- Not a Vertuo capsule: Nespresso Original only. A Vertuo machine reads a barcode on the rim and will not take these.
- Not decaffeinated: and roast depth is not a caffeine rating.
