What Decaf Actually Costs You
Decaf has a poor reputation in Britain and most of it was earned twenty years ago rather than today. The processes have improved a great deal, and a decaf capsule from a mainstream range is now a normal cup of coffee rather than a compromise. There are still two honest trade-offs worth knowing.
The first is body. Decaffeination is a solvent or water process that pulls other soluble material out alongside the caffeine, so a decaf tends to read a fraction lighter and softer than the same beans would otherwise. Roasting to an espresso depth, as this one is, is partly how a roaster puts that weight back.
The second is forgiveness. Green decaf beans behave differently in the roaster and the finished coffee is a little less tolerant of a cool machine or a cold cup than a regular espresso roast. Nothing dramatic, but it means the small habits matter slightly more: warm the cup, keep the machine descaled, use fresh water.
What it does not cost you is caffeine-free status in the strict sense, flavour by default, or the right to call it coffee. And it buys you a second cup after dinner, which for a great many households is the whole point.
The Process Is On The Pack
There is more than one way to take caffeine out of a green bean. Water-based processes, carbon dioxide processes and solvent processes all exist, they all work, and they leave slightly different marks on the cup. Anyone who quotes you a decaffeination process for a specific pack without having read that pack is guessing.
The same applies to the origin split, the Arabica proportion, the roast level in any precise sense and the net weight of coffee in the box.

Getting a Consistent Cup
- Warm the cup: the cheapest fix available, and the one that makes the most difference to a decaf.
- Descale on schedule: scale drops brewing temperature, and an under-extracted shot reads sour rather than weak.
- Blank shot first: if the machine has stood overnight, run 50ml of plain water through before the first capsule.
- Do not pull it long: if you want a mug, pull a normal shot and add hot water rather than stretching the capsule.
- Iced: two capsules pulled short over a glass packed with ice, then cold water or milk. Decaf makes a good evening iced coffee.
- Caffeine note: decaffeinated, not caffeine-free. A trace remains, as it does in every decaf coffee.
- Best with: dark chocolate, a slice of cake, cheese, or on its own after dinner.

- Fresh filtered water in the tank
- A warmed espresso cup
- Warm the cup with a blank shot of hot water and tip it away. On a decaf this matters more than on anything else.
- Extract one capsule on the espresso setting, around 40ml.
- Drink it black and drink it promptly rather than nursing it.
What you'll end up with: A short, rounded after-dinner coffee with real weight to it, and nothing that will cost you the night. This is what the capsule exists for.

- 2 capsules Starbucks Decaf Espresso
- 120ml milk, dairy or oat
- A warmed 200ml cup
- Extract two capsules on the espresso setting into the same warmed cup.
- Texture 120ml of milk to a smooth microfoam, steaming rather than boiling.
- Pour slowly so the milk sits on the coffee rather than punching through it.
What you'll end up with: A proper milk coffee after a meal. Two shots rather than one is the whole trick: a decaf is a fraction lighter in body, and a single shot disappears under this much milk.

- 1 capsule Starbucks Decaf Espresso
- 120ml hot water
- A warmed mug
- Pour 120ml of hot water into a warmed mug first.
- Extract one capsule on the espresso setting straight into the water.
- Do not stretch the capsule to fill the mug instead.

- A glass packed to the top with ice
- 100ml cold water or milk
- Pack the glass to the top with ice. Three cubes will not do it.
- Extract two capsules on the espresso setting straight over the ice.

- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
- Grated dark chocolate, optional
- Scoop the ice cream into a cold bowl or glass.
