Nothing in this strip has been decided for you except the coffee itself. Sugar is absent, so the mug arrives plain and you sweeten it or you do not, which sounds like a small thing until you have been handed a complimentary sachet and tipped it down the sink. With nothing laid over the top of it the coffee moves forward: light in body, dry, short and clean at the finish, and none of the stickiness that a sweet strip leaves behind. It will not replace a jar at home and is not meant to. The Story Behind Nescafe
Nescafe is Nestle's instant coffee brand and one of the best-known coffee names on any British shelf. The 2 in 1 and 3 in 1 sachets are a different proposition from the jars: rather than selling coffee and leaving the rest to your kitchen, they sell a drink that needs only a kettle. That format is enormously popular outside Britain, where a kettle and a sachet are often the whole of the available coffee equipment. The 2 in 1 is the quieter half of the pair and the one that gets overlooked on the shelf, which is a pity, because unsweetened is the harder version to find and the easier one to live with.

What You Are Actually Buying
- Count and weight: eight sachets at nine grams each, so eight mugs and seventy-two grams in the box.
- Two things, not three: coffee and a whitening component. No sugar goes in at the factory, so the sweetness is yours to set or to skip.
- Smaller sachet, same job: nine grams against the sixteen of the sweetened version. Expect a lighter mug than a 3 in 1, and do not read that lightness as weakness.
- What it is not: not a latte, not a cappuccino and not a black coffee. It is a white instant coffee that happens to arrive pre-measured.
Ideal Serving Conditions
An unsweetened sachet gives you back two decisions the sweetened one takes away: how sweet, and how strong. The rest is the same short list of things worth getting right, and all of it is about water.
The Proper Mug
- Measure: one sachet to 150 to 180ml. Nine grams does not stretch to a 300ml mug, and trying is the commonest reason a 2 in 1 disappoints.
- Water: around 90 degrees Celsius, which means giving the kettle a minute to settle before you pour. Whitener scalds at a rolling boil and picks up a cooked, faintly metallic note that an unsweetened mug hides nowhere.
- Pour: sachet into a dry mug first, then the water from a height. The drop helps disperse the whitener and leaves fewer lumps.
- Stir: once or twice is enough. There is no sugar here to sink, so this mug needs less stirring than the sweetened version does.
The Sweetening Decision
- Sugar: half a teaspoon, put into the dry mug with the powder so it dissolves rather than sitting at the bottom. Half is usually plenty when nothing is competing with it.
- Honey or syrup: work it into the dry powder with a splash of hot water first, then top up.
- Nothing at all: the honest recommendation, and worth two mugs before you judge it. Unsweetened white coffee tastes thin for one cup and then stops tasting thin.
- Two sachets: if you want it stronger rather than sweeter, a second sachet in the same 180ml is the cleanest way to get there. That is a luxury the sweetened version does not allow, because doubling it doubles the sugar too.
Getting It Right in the Cup
- Water temperature: around 90 degrees Celsius, not straight off the boil.
- Measure: one sachet per 150 to 180ml. Small mug, not a big one.
- Method: powder into a dry mug, water poured in from a height, a stir or two.
- Storage: sealed and dry. Whitener takes up moisture readily, and a split sachet in a damp cupboard sets into a block.
- Travelling: flat, light, unbreakable and needing no fridge, which is the whole argument for the format.
- Best with: your own sugar spoon, a biscuit, and any situation where the kettle is the only equipment available.

- 1 sachet Nescafe Original 2 in 1
- 150 to 180ml water at 90 degrees Celsius
- Boil the kettle and let it stand for a minute, so you are not pouring at a rolling boil.
- Empty the sachet into a dry mug, and pick a small mug rather than a large one.
- Pour the water in from a height, which helps disperse the whitener and leaves fewer lumps.

- 2 sachets Nescafe Original 2 in 1
- 180ml water at 90 degrees Celsius
- Empty both sachets into a dry mug and mix them together dry.
- Add a splash of hot water and work it to a smooth paste before topping up.
- Top up to 180ml and stir through.
- Note that nothing has got sweeter, only stronger, which is a luxury the 3 in 1 does not give you.
What you'll end up with: A proper strong white coffee for an early start or a night shift. Four mugs a box instead of eight, which is a fair trade when you need it.
Iced White Coffee, Sweetened Last
How to make Iced White Coffee, Sweetened Last with Nescafe Original 2 in 1.
- 1 sachet Nescafe Original 2 in 1
- 50ml hot water
- A full glass of ice
- Sugar syrup or honey, added at the end
- Dissolve the sachet in only 50ml of hot water and stir until completely smooth.
- Cool the base for a minute so it does not melt the ice on contact.
- Pour over a full glass of ice and top up with cold water.
- Sweeten last, with syrup rather than granulated sugar, because sugar will not dissolve in a cold glass.
What you'll end up with: A better iced coffee than the sweetened sachet gives you, because cold drinks read less sweet and here you get to correct for that yourself.
Flask Coffee for the Road
How to make Flask Coffee for the Road with Nescafe Original 2 in 1.
- 4 sachets Nescafe Original 2 in 1
- 500ml water at 90 degrees Celsius
- A pre-warmed flask
- Rinse the flask out with hot water and tip it away, so the steel is warm before the coffee goes in.
- Mix four sachets to a smooth paste in a jug with a splash of hot water.
- Top up to 500ml, stir well and pour into the flask straight away.
- Carry a few sugar sachets separately if anyone sharing it takes sugar, since the flask itself stays unsweetened.
What you'll end up with: Three or four cups of white coffee with no milk to keep cold, and everyone sweetening their own. The sensible flask for a shared car.
Coffee Jelly for Pudding
How to make Coffee Jelly for Pudding with Nescafe Original 2 in 1.
- 3 sachets Nescafe Original 2 in 1
- 400ml hot water
- 3 tablespoons sugar, or to taste
- Gelatine or a vegetarian setting agent, as its packet directs
- Dissolve three sachets and the sugar in 400ml of hot water, stirring until completely smooth.
- Add the setting agent exactly as its own packet directs, since quantities differ between brands.
- Pour into four small pots and chill for at least four hours.
- Serve with a spoon of cream, and decide the sweetness at step one rather than living with someone else's.
