Crema is the one thing a pod machine does that a cafetiere cannot. Pressure puts a proper hazel layer on top of a long black, and a good deal of why this reads richer than its strength deserves is sitting right there. It does not last, either, so make it when you are ready to drink it instead of pouring it and wandering off. Underneath, this is a short extraction carrying a great deal of water, which leaves it lighter in the mouth than an espresso out of the same machine. Nescafe Dolce Gusto Americano Coffee is the plain black coffee of the Dolce Gusto system, and the pack most Dolce Gusto households run out of first. Thirty pods give thirty servings, so one capsule makes one full mug with no second pod and no milk stage. This one does not work that way.
It is the machine equivalent of a long black from a cafe: a short, high pressure extraction stretched out with hot water into a mug-sized drink rather than a thimble of espresso. You get the convenience of a capsule with the volume of a proper cup of coffee, and because there is nothing in the pod but roast and ground coffee, you decide afterwards whether it takes milk, cream, oat milk or nothing at all.

Where this sits in the Dolce Gusto range
Dolce Gusto is Nescafe's own capsule system. The capsules fit Dolce Gusto machines only, so they are not interchangeable with Nespresso, Tassimo, A Modo Mio or any of the aluminium-capsule formats, and the machine is what does the work: it pushes hot water through the sealed pod at pressure and stops at the line printed on the capsule or the setting you have dialled in. Nothing about the drink depends on your technique, which is the entire point of the format.
Within that range this is the workhorse rather than the showpiece. The cappuccinos, lattes and macchiatos are two-capsule drinks with a milk pod and a coffee pod. The Americano is one pod, black, and made to be drunk in volume, which is why the thirty-pod box exists at all while most of the milk drinks come in sixteens.

- Against Dolce Gusto Flat White or Cafe Au Lait pods: those arrive already sweetened by milk and are fixed drinks you cannot adjust. The Americano is a blank black coffee. If you want the milk, you add the milk you actually keep in the fridge, in the quantity you like.
Getting a good cup out of it
There is less to go wrong with a capsule than with loose coffee, but the two things you can control both make a real difference.
The everyday mug
Water:Fill the tank with fresh cold water rather than topping up yesterday's. Standing water tastes flat in the cup and it is the single most common reason a pod machine seems to have gone off.
Volume:Run to the fill line marked for an Americano first, then adjust. Stopping short gives you a stronger, more bitter drink; running long thins it and pushes the finish papery.
Warm the mug:Run a short burst of hot water into the mug and tip it out before you brew. A cold mug takes a surprising amount of heat out of a long drink.
Drink it soon:Crema collapses within a couple of minutes and the aromatics go with it. This is a coffee to pour and drink, not to leave on the desk.
The long black variation
Order matters:Put 60 to 80ml of hot water in the mug first, then brew a short pull on top of it.
Why:Brewing onto water preserves the crema instead of breaking it, and the drink reads sweeter and rounder than the same coffee poured the other way round.
Finish:No milk. If you want it softer, use less water rather than more milk.
Practical notes on the pack

The Standard Morning Americano
How to brew a properly hot Americano from a Dolce Gusto pod.
- 1 Dolce Gusto Americano pod
- Fresh cold water in the tank
- Milk, optional
- Fill the tank with fresh cold water rather than topping up yesterday's.
- Warm the mug with a burst of hot water and tip it out.
- Brew to the fill line marked for an Americano.
- Drink within a couple of minutes, while the crema is still on it.
What you'll end up with: A full mug of hot black coffee with a hazel crema, ready to take milk or not.
Long Black (Brew Onto Water)
The same pod, poured in the other order, for a sweeter and rounder cup.
- 1 Dolce Gusto Americano pod
- 60 to 80ml hot water
- Pour 60 to 80ml of hot water into the mug first.
- Brew the pod short, at roughly half the marked fill line, straight on top of the water.
- Do not stir; let the crema settle on the surface.
What you'll end up with: The crema survives intact and the cup reads noticeably sweeter than the same coffee poured the usual way round.
Iced Americano Over Ice
The short pull that survives the melt.
- 1 Dolce Gusto Americano pod
- A full tall glass of ice
- Strip of orange peel, optional
- Fill a tall glass right to the top with ice; a half-filled glass melts faster and dilutes more.
- Brew the pod at about half the usual volume directly over the ice.
- Twist a strip of orange peel over the surface and drop it in.
What you'll end up with: A cold coffee that still tastes like coffee at the bottom of the glass instead of like brown water.
Espresso Tonic
A long summer drink built on a short pull from the same box.
- 1 Dolce Gusto Americano pod, pulled short
- 150ml cold tonic water
- Ice
- Lime wedge
- Fill a tall glass with ice and pour in 150ml of cold tonic water.
- Brew the pod very short, around a third of the marked line, into a small cup.
- Pour the coffee slowly over the back of a spoon so it layers on top of the tonic.
- Finish with a squeeze of lime and stir once before drinking.
What you'll end up with: Bitter, citric and properly refreshing. It layers dark over clear for about a minute, which is worth looking at before you stir it.
Flat White Without a Milk Pod
How to get a milk coffee out of a black pod and a jug.
- 1 Dolce Gusto Americano pod, pulled short
- 120ml whole or oat milk
- Brew the pod at roughly half volume into a small cup so the coffee is concentrated.
- Heat 120ml of milk to steaming but not boiling, then froth it with a hand whisk or a jar and a hard shake.
- Pour the milk in from a low height, holding the foam back with a spoon until the last inch.
What you'll end up with: A milk coffee you controlled, made from a box that costs less per drink than the two-pod milk versions.
Coffee Soak for Tiramisu
Using the pods in the kitchen rather than the mug.
- 3 Dolce Gusto Americano pods, pulled short
- 1 tablespoon caster sugar
- 2 tablespoons marsala or dark rum, optional
- Sponge fingers and a standard mascarpone cream
- Brew three pods short into a shallow dish, around 60ml each, so the soak is strong rather than long.
- Stir in the sugar while warm and the marsala or rum if you are using it, then cool completely.
- Dip each sponge finger for no more than two seconds a side; longer and the layer collapses.
- Layer with the mascarpone cream and chill for at least four hours before dusting with cocoa.
What you'll end up with: A soak strong enough to hold its own against the cream, which is where most home tiramisu falls down.
