A Baileys-style coffee with no alcohol, and on those terms it works. The Irish cream note is the whole point: rich butterscotch and vanilla, a scorched sugar and hazelnut aroma that really does rise off the cup the instant the water lands, and a fine, lasting foam that gives proper body for a sachet. The coffee itself is deliberately mild, around three out of five, there to anchor the sweetness rather than assert itself, so anyone wanting an actual coffee hit should look at a plain Azera or the dark Nescafe Gold instead. This sits with the Starbucks flavoured sachets and the Nescafe Gold flavoured jars as a dessert-in-a-mug rather than a morning fuel, and the sweetness is built in with no way to dial it down. Best as a hot frothy evening treat; it also makes a decent blended frappe over ice. Take it as what it is, a comforting treat that tastes boozy yet contains no alcohol, and it does the job nicely.

Brewing the perfect cup

MeasurePour one whole Irish cream sachet into a warmed mug; loose, that is 2 to 3 heaped teaspoons.

PourTop up with 200ml of hot water that has stopped boiling, or milk steamed to 65°C; a rolling boil makes it less smooth.

StirA brisk 10 second stir should see every grain gone; if lumps remain, either the water lacked heat or the spoon stopped too soon.

FinishWhipped cream on top, a pinch of cocoa or cinnamon, or a fine line of caramel syrup makes it look café made.

Iced versionStart by melting the sachet into 80ml of hot water; once a tall glass is loaded with ice, add the hot mix and then 200ml of cold milk. Dissolving it hot first means the cold milk never meets dry powder, so no lumps.
