LCurator note · McVitie's
Scores rarely stay this high once a pack gets big. This one has. What sits behind it is an oat biscuit that arrives with its texture already decided: rolled oats are a whole ingredient rather than a flour, so the surface of every round comes out irregular, and the coating settles into the dips instead of lying flat. That is why no two look alike, why some appear more generously covered than others, and why this never reads as machine-made in the way a smooth round does. It is heavier than its size suggests, and most people find that out somewhere in the second one rather than the third, so a 431g pack goes further than the weight on the front implies. There are oats and wheat flour in the biscuit and milk in the coating, and the pack panel covers everything else. Where it earns its keep is late in the afternoon with the next meal still an hour or two off, which is a job most of this section cannot do.

About this product

McVitie's Hobnobs Milk Choc Jumbo Pack Biscuits, in brief.

McVitie's Milk Chocolate Hobnobs in the 431g jumbo pack is the rolled-oat biscuit with milk chocolate on one face and bare oats on the other, picked into the Teas.co.uk selection as the rougher, more filling answer to a chocolate digestive.

The hobnob is the more filling biscuit, so two do the job of three. It is also the most forgiving dunk here: five seconds chocolate side up, because an open oat crumb takes liquid in without collapsing. Clip the pack from the first day.

The two packs sit side by side in our range at near enough the same weight, so the comparison is worth making plainly. The hobnob is the more filling biscuit, and two hobnobs do the job of three digestives. That is a judgement rather than a measurement.

The Story Behind The Pack

McVitie's built the digestive first and the hobnob much later, and the later biscuit exists because rolled oats behave differently from wheatmeal in every way that matters to a biscuit. Oats give an open, nubbly structure with visible grain, they hold their shape in liquid far longer than a fine crumb does, and they carry a natural sweetness that lets the whole biscuit read richer. The result is a biscuit that is unmistakable by touch alone, which very few packet biscuits manage.

The jumbo pack is the size the household buys rather than the size one person buys, and the sealed film is the only thing standing between an open pack and a soft one. Oats resist going soft a little better than wheatmeal does, but only a little, and the advantage disappears entirely if the pack is left open on a shelf above a kettle. A clip from the first day is worth more than any amount of care later.

The ingredient declaration, the nutrition panel and the allergen statement are printed on the current UK pack and not in our hands.

Our Commitment To The Planet

  • We supply the current UK retail pack rather than an import made to a different recipe for another market.
  • A jumbo pack is less packaging per biscuit than two smaller ones, but only if it gets finished. A pack that goes soft and is thrown away undoes the whole advantage.

Serving Notes For McVitie's Hobnobs Milk Choc Jumbo Pack Biscuits, 431g

  • Water temperature: Full boil. Nothing about this biscuit needs a careful kettle.
  • Measure: One bag per 200ml, two biscuits per person.
  • Steep: Four minutes, strong rather than medium.
  • Service: Chocolate side up on the plate so the coating does not stick.
  • Iced version: Reasonable. An unsweetened cold-brewed black tea suits the oat sweetness.
  • Best with: A strong builders tea, a mug of coffee with milk, or a flask on a cold walk.

Tasting notes

The taste profile

Oat biscuit●●●●● 5/5
Rough, open and visibly grainy, with a chew that no wheatmeal biscuit gives. It is the reason the biscuit is recognisable with your eyes shut.
Milk chocolate●●●●○ 4/5
One face only, and it sits in the ridges of the oats rather than on a smooth surface, so it grips better than it does on a digestive.
Sweetness●●●●○ 4/5
Higher than a digestive. Oats bring their own sweetness and the coating adds to it rather than being cut by salt.
Dunk strength●●●●● 5/5
The most forgiving in the section. An open grainy crumb takes liquid in without collapsing, so five seconds is comfortable.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs McVitie's Digestives Milk Chocolate Biscuits, 433gThe digestive is less sweet and finer in the crumb; the hobnob is rougher, more filling and better in the tea.
vs Bahlsen Choco Leibniz Orange, 111gA plate biscuit for visitors; this is a cupboard biscuit for a Tuesday.

This is the most forgiving biscuit in the section to dunk, and the reason is the oat structure rather than anything about the chocolate. An open, grainy crumb takes liquid in without collapsing, so you get roughly five seconds instead of the three a digestive gives you. It is also the biscuit that most rewards a strong cup, because there is enough going on in it to stand up to one.

The Five Second Dunk

02
CountFive seconds. The open oat structure takes liquid in between the grains rather than through a fine crumb, so it holds far longer.
03
The failureStill the chocolate rather than the biscuit, but you have longer before it happens, which is why hobnobs forgive an interrupted dunk.
04
The rewardA soft warm oat crumb that keeps some texture instead of turning to paste, which is the single best thing this biscuit does.

Made with this tea

The Everyday Mug

How to make The Everyday Mug with McVitie's Milk Chocolate Hobnobs.

5 min 1 serving Easy
You'll need
  • 2 milk chocolate hobnobs
  • 1 bag standard black tea
  • 200ml water at a full boil
  • A splash of milk
Method
  1. Brew one bag in 200ml straight off the boil for four minutes. Strong; this biscuit wants a cup that can answer it.
  2. Add milk. The oat crumb is dry and a black cup leaves it drier. No sugar.
  3. Take two rather than three. A hobnob is more filling than it looks.
  4. Clip the pack shut before you sit down.

What you'll end up with: The most substantial tea break in this section, and the one that fills a gap rather than just accompanying a drink.

The Five Second Dunk

How to make The Five Second Dunk with McVitie's Milk Chocolate Hobnobs.

1 min 1 biscuit Easy
You'll need
  • 1 milk chocolate hobnob
  • 1 mug of strong tea
  • Five seconds
Method
  1. Hold it chocolate side up so the coating stays clear of the surface.
  2. Dip the bare oat face for five seconds, which is roughly twice what a digestive tolerates.
  3. Watch the chocolate rather than the crumb. It still gives way first, but you have far more warning.
  4. Eat in one bite. The soft warm oat crumb keeps some texture instead of turning to paste.
Chocolate Oat Crumble Topping

How to make a Chocolate Oat Crumble Topping with McVitie's Milk Chocolate Hobnobs.

10 min + bake 4 servings Easy
You'll need
  • 6 milk chocolate hobnobs
  • 600g prepared fruit
  • 25g cold butter
  • A hot oven
Method
  1. Break the biscuits by hand into rough pieces rather than crushing them to crumbs.
  2. Rub in the cold butter lightly, just enough to bind the larger pieces together.
  3. Scatter over the prepared fruit in a dish, keeping the layer loose rather than packed.
  4. Bake until the fruit bubbles at the edges, watching the last few minutes so the chocolate does not catch.

What you'll end up with: A crumble topping with the oats and the chocolate already in it, which is where a hobnob beats a digestive outright.

No Bake Oat Traybake

How to make a No Bake Oat Traybake with McVitie's Milk Chocolate Hobnobs.

20 min + chill 12 pieces Medium
You'll need
  • 300g milk chocolate hobnobs
  • 100g butter
  • 3 tablespoons golden syrup
  • 200g melted dark chocolate
Method
  1. Break the biscuits into chunks. The oats give a coarse traybake, which is the point.
  2. Melt the butter and syrup together and pour over the biscuit chunks.
  3. Press into a lined tin, firmly enough to hold and no firmer.
  4. Pour the melted dark chocolate over the top and chill until set, then cut into squares.

What you'll end up with: A chewier, coarser traybake than a digestive gives, and the best way to use up a pack that has started to soften.

The Flask Serve

How to make The Flask Serve with McVitie's Milk Chocolate Hobnobs.

5 min 2 servings Easy
You'll need
  • 4 milk chocolate hobnobs
  • A flask of strong tea with milk
  • A rigid tub
Method
  1. Brew the tea strong and fill the flask; weak tea loses badly to a hobnob.
  2. Pack the biscuits in a rigid tub rather than loose in a bag, because the coating marks everything it touches.
  3. Serve outdoors in the cold, where the chocolate is firm and the oats are at their best.
  4. Dunk for five seconds, which is easier to judge when the tea has cooled a little in the flask.

What you'll end up with: The most filling thing in this section doing the job it is genuinely best at, which is being eaten outside in the cold.

Product questions

Asked about this product

About five seconds, chocolate side up. That is roughly twice what a digestive gives you, and the reason is structural: an open oat crumb takes liquid in between the grains instead of soaking through a fine texture, so it holds its shape much longer. The chocolate still gives way before the biscuit does.
