McVitie's Gold Caramel Flavour Biscuit Bars Multipack, 7 Bars 124g
Open one in a room and nobody looks up, which is the most telling thing about this bar. A chocolate covering announces itself; a pale caramel-toned one carries almost no aroma at all, so the whole product arrives as sweetness and nothing else. Whether that counts against it depends entirely on who it is for. Anybody who wants the cocoa will find nothing here to hold on to, and anybody who has quietly never much liked chocolate has been waiting for it. The coating is less robust than a chocolate one, too: it marks where brown would hide, so a box that has been knocked about looks considerably worse than it eats. Milk and wheat are both in it, so it is out for a dairy-free household and for a coeliac diet. Take it as confectionery that happens to contain a biscuit and it makes complete sense.
McVitie's Gold Caramel Flavour Biscuit Bars Multipack, in brief.
McVitie's Gold is the caramel-flavour bar in the McVitie's wrapped range, a biscuit inside a pale caramel-toned coating rather than a brown chocolate one, seven sealed bars at eighteen point three grams each, picked into the Teas.co.uk curator selection as the one bar on this shelf with no cocoa in it anywhere.
The pack says caramel flavour rather than caramel, and in UK labelling that wording signals a flavoured coating rather than a layer of soft caramel, which is worth knowing before you open it. With no cocoa anywhere there is no internal counterweight, so drink something black and bitter alongside.
Where a Club or a Rocky is covered in brown chocolate, the Gold is covered in a pale caramel-toned coating, and the taste follows the colour: softer, sweeter, more butterscotch than cocoa. Seven bars to the pack at eighteen point three grams each, one hundred and twenty-eight point one grams in total, every one sealed on its own.
Read the name carefully, because it is doing legal work as well as marketing. The pack says caramel flavour rather than caramel, and in UK labelling that wording signals that the taste is delivered by flavouring rather than by a caramel ingredient. That is not a criticism, it is simply what the bar is: a flavoured coating, not a layer of soft caramel. Anyone buying this expecting the pull of a caramel centre will be disappointed, and anyone buying it for a sweet butterscotch coating will not be.

The Story Behind McVitie's
McVitie's is a British biscuit house and the most familiar name on any UK biscuit aisle, best known for the digestive. The Gold belongs to the company's wrapped-bar half of the business rather than the tin-and-packet half, built for a lunchbox, a glovebox or a drawer at work. It has always been the odd one out in that range: every other bar leads with chocolate, and this one deliberately does not.
The ingredient list, the allergen advice and the best-before date must all be read off the current UK pack rather than taken from this page.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.
What You Are Actually Buying
- Count and weight: seven bars at eighteen point three grams each, so one hundred and twenty-eight point one grams in the pack.
- The smallest bar here: eighteen point three grams is lighter than a Club at twenty-two and lighter than a Rocky at nineteen. It is a small bar.
- Individually sealed: nothing goes stale between Monday and Friday and nothing arrives crushed at the bottom of a bag, which is the whole argument for a multipack over a packet.
- A pale coating, not chocolate: this is the defining feature. It changes the flavour, the colour, the melting behaviour and the drink you want beside it.
- What it is not: not a caramel-filled bar, not a chocolate bar and not a dark or bitter product in any sense. If you want the pull of soft caramel, this is the wrong pack.
Ideal Serving Conditions
A bar with no cocoa in it anywhere has no internal counterweight at all, so everything that balances it has to arrive from outside. That makes the choice of drink more consequential here than for any other bar in this range, and it makes the temperature of the bar matter for texture rather than for flavour.
The Coffee Break Serve
- Black coffee, unsweetened, always: this is not a preference, it is close to a requirement. The bar brings five out of five sweetness and effectively no bitterness, and a strong black coffee is the only common drink that puts the two back in balance.
- Cool room temperature: a pale coating softens at a lower temperature than you expect and goes tacky rather than glossy. Straight from a cool cupboard gives the clean snap.
- Do not dunk: a coated bar has no exposed porous crumb, so it softens from the outside in and the coating slides. This format does not take a dunk.
- One is usually enough: at this level of sweetness the second bar tastes markedly less good than the first, which is a genuine argument for the small bar size.
The Pudding Serve
- With dark chocolate: a square of something genuinely bitter eaten alongside does for the palate what black coffee does, and it is the easiest correction available.
- Crumbled over plain yoghurt: sourness against butterscotch is an old and reliable pairing, and it stops the sweetness running away.
- Through banana: sliced banana and crushed Gold in a bowl is close to a banoffee without the work, and the caramel note is already doing the job the toffee would.
- In a fridge slab: pieces set into a dark chocolate tiffin, where the pale bar reads visually as well as in the taste and the dark chocolate supplies what the bar does not.
Getting It Right with a Hot Drink
- Pairing: strong unsweetened black coffee first, strong black tea second. Both bring the tannin and bitterness the bar has none of.
- Avoid: hot chocolate, sweetened lattes, milky teas and anything caramel-flavoured. Every one of them adds sweetness to a bar that already has all it can carry.
- Dunking: no. Eat it alongside.
- Storage: cool, dry and out of direct sun with the outer pack closed. A pale coating shows bloom and fingerprints more obviously than a brown one does.
- Best with: a mid-morning coffee, a packed lunch, or a mid-afternoon break when what you want is straightforwardly sweet.

The taste profile
How does it compare
Six builds cover the black coffee break, a banoffee bowl, a yoghurt pot, a dark chocolate fridge slab, a banana loaf topping and a lunchbox routine.
Made with this tea
The Strong Black Coffee Break
How to make The Strong Black Coffee Break with McVitie's Gold.
- 1 bar McVitie's Gold
- 1 strong filter coffee or espresso, unsweetened
- A glass of cold water
- Brew the coffee stronger than you normally would and leave it unsweetened. This bar has no cocoa in it and therefore no bitterness at all, so the cup is doing all of the balancing.
- Snap the bar into three and eat a piece between sips.
- Keep it out of the coffee. A caramel-flavour coating softens faster than chocolate and slides straight off.
- Finish with cold water to clear the sweet coating from the tongue.
What you'll end up with: The only pairing that makes a five-out-of-five sweet bar read as balanced rather than as sugar.
Five Minute Banoffee Bowl
How to make Five Minute Banoffee Bowl with McVitie's Gold.
- 2 bars McVitie's Gold
- 2 ripe bananas, sliced
- 200g thick plain yoghurt
- A pinch of instant coffee granules
- Crush the bars into rough pieces rather than crumbs.
- Layer yoghurt, banana and biscuit into two bowls, finishing with biscuit.
- Scatter the coffee granules over the top. They are not decoration, they are the bitterness the bar is missing.
- Eat within ten minutes, before the pieces soften.
What you'll end up with: Close to a banoffee without the work, because the caramel note is already doing the job the toffee would.
Sour Yoghurt Crunch Pot
How to make Sour Yoghurt Crunch Pot with McVitie's Gold.
- 2 bars McVitie's Gold
- 300g thick plain yoghurt
- A handful of raspberries or blackberries
- Break the bars into shards and keep them cold until the last moment.
- Spoon the yoghurt into two glasses and press the berries lightly with a fork so they bleed.
- Scatter the biscuit over the top and serve immediately.
What you'll end up with: Sourness against butterscotch is an old and reliable pairing, and it stops the sweetness running away from you.
Dark Chocolate Fridge Slab
How to make Dark Chocolate Fridge Slab with McVitie's Gold.
- 4 bars McVitie's Gold
- 250g dark chocolate, 70 per cent
- 80g butter
- A good pinch of flaky salt
- Chop the bars into rough pieces. Keep them chunky so the pale pieces show against the dark chocolate.
- Melt the dark chocolate and butter together gently and stir until glossy.
- Fold the biscuit through, press into a lined tin and scatter the salt over the top.
- Chill for two hours and cut into squares straight from the fridge.
What you'll end up with: The dark chocolate and the salt supply everything the bar does not, and the pale pieces look as good as they taste in a cut slab.
Banana Loaf with a Gold Top
How to make Banana Loaf with a Gold Top with McVitie's Gold.
- 3 bars McVitie's Gold
- 3 very ripe bananas, mashed
- 225g self raising flour
- 100g butter and 100g sugar
- Make a standard banana loaf batter with the butter, sugar, flour, two eggs and the mashed bananas.
- Bake at 170C for 40 minutes, until a skewer comes out almost clean.
- Crush the bars and scatter them over the top for the last five minutes only. A flavoured coating does not behave like chocolate under long heat.
- Cool in the tin so the topping sets rather than slides.
What you'll end up with: Banana and butterscotch, with the biscuit staying on top where it keeps its texture instead of dissolving into the crumb.
The Lunchbox Week
How to make The Lunchbox Week with McVitie's Gold.
- 1 pack McVitie's Gold
- A lunchbox or a desk drawer
- A sharp apple a day
- Store the whole pack in the coolest cupboard you have. A pale coating softens at a lower temperature than chocolate and goes tacky rather than soft.
- Take one bar out at a time and leave the rest sealed.
- Pack a sharp apple alongside rather than a second sweet thing, and keep the drink black.
- Check for bloom before packing a bar that has been somewhere warm. It is still safe, but the snap has gone.
What you'll end up with: A working week with two spare, none of it crushed or tacky by Friday.
