LCurator note · McVitie's
Dark sets harder than milk. On a biscuit that is a structural difference rather than a matter of taste: a harder coating fractures with the round instead of smearing, so the bite stays clean and the biscuit is still a biscuit at the end of it, which is the whole reason people who find the milk version collapses into sweetness come to this one instead. Set expectations correctly, though. This is a coating chocolate rather than a bar chocolate, formulated to go onto a porous base and stay there, and anyone arriving from a high-cocoa tablet will find it sweeter than they are braced for. Judged as a biscuit it is excellent; judged as confectionery it was never trying. Two sealed packs, 532g. Dark does not mean dairy-free, there is wheat in the round, and the current pack carries the declaration that matters.

About this product

McVitie's Digestives Dark Chocolate Twin Pack Biscuits, in brief.

McVitie's Dark Chocolate Digestives is the wholemeal digestive with a dark chocolate layer on one face: firmer, drier and considerably less sweet than the milk version, and the one where the nutty wholemeal base actually comes through. This is the twin pack, two 266g packs and 532g in all.

Brew three to four minutes rather than five, because cocoa bitterness and tea tannin both read as dryness.

That 532g is worked out from the twin-pack description rather than a figure read off a pack in front of us.

The Story Behind The Pack

McVitie's is one of the best-known names in British biscuit baking and the chocolate digestive is the line it is most identified with. That is heritage rather than a claim about where this carton was baked or what went into it; the recipe is on the current UK pack.

The useful thing to understand is what changes when the coating goes from milk to dark, because it is not simply a matter of taste. Dark chocolate carries more cocoa solids and less sugar and dairy, and cocoa solids are where both the bitterness and most of the aroma live. The layer is therefore firmer, slower to melt and drier in the mouth, and it finishes on cocoa instead of on sweetness. Underneath, the wholemeal base is doing the same job it always does, but it is far more audible here: with less sugar sitting over it, the nutty, faintly savoury edge of the biscuit comes through as a flavour in its own right rather than as a counterweight. The result is a biscuit that tastes more of biscuit, which is either the point or the problem, depending on why you buy chocolate digestives.

Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.

Our Commitment To The Planet

  • The carton you receive is the current UK retail pack, rather than an import made to a different recipe for another market.
  • Two packs in one carton uses less outer material per biscuit than two singles, and the sealed second pack matters more for a chocolate-faced biscuit than a plain one, because an open pack takes up cupboard smells through the chocolate.

Serving Notes For McVitie's Dark Chocolate Digestives Twin Pack, 2 x 266g

  • Water temperature: Full boil for black tea; around 95 degrees for a rooibos.
  • Measure: One bag per 200ml, two biscuits a person.
  • Steep: Three to four minutes, not five. Two sources of astringency in one mouthful is one too many.
  • Service: Milk yes, sugar allowable here.
  • Dunk: Two seconds at most, chocolate side up. Dark chocolate is firmer than milk but it still slides once warm.
  • Storage: Cool, dry, steady and away from anything strongly scented. Chocolate takes up cupboard smells far more readily than a plain biscuit does.
  • Best with: A shorter-brewed black tea with milk, a medium-roast black coffee, or an unsweetened rooibos in the evening.

Tasting notes

The taste profile

Dark chocolate●●●●● 5/5
Firmer, cooler and considerably less sweet than the milk version, with a cocoa bitterness that stays in the mouth after the sweetness has gone.
Wholemeal●●●●● 5/5
More audible here than under milk chocolate, because there is less sugar sitting on top of it. The nutty, bran-like note comes through properly.
Crumb●●●●○ 4/5
The same short, sandy digestive crumb. Unchanged by the coating, as it is on every version.
Finish●●●●○ 4/5
Longer and drier than the milk version, ending on cocoa rather than on sugar. It is the more grown-up of the two and the more demanding.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs McVitie's Digestives Dark Chocolate Biscuits, 433gThe same biscuit in a single 433g pack. The argument for the twin pack is the second sealed wrapper.

Dark chocolate and black tea are a trickier pairing than milk chocolate and black tea, and it is worth knowing why before you brew. Cocoa solids carry bitterness and tea carries tannin, and both register as dryness in the mouth, so a long-steeped cup beside this biscuit can end up astringent from two directions at once. The two builds below both work around that.

Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Softer Mug

01
BrewA standard black tea, one bag per 200ml at a full boil, three to four minutes rather than five. Shorter than you would brew for a plain digestive.
02
MilkA proper splash, and here it earns its place: milk softens tannin, which is the half of the astringency you can actually control.
03
SugarOptional, and this is the one chocolate biscuit where a sugared cup is defensible, because the coating is not supplying much.
04
CountTwo. The dry finish makes a third less tempting than it would be on the milk version.
Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Coffee Or Rooibos Route

01
ServeA medium-roast black coffee, or an unsweetened rooibos if it is late.
02
Why coffee worksRoast and cocoa share aromatic ground, so a medium roast reinforces the chocolate instead of competing with it. Avoid a very dark roast, which stacks bitterness on bitterness.
03
Why rooibos worksIt carries a soft natural sweetness and almost no tannin, so it meets a dry, bitter finish without adding to it. It is the best evening answer for this particular biscuit.
04
TemperatureRoom temperature. A cold dark chocolate layer is hard work and gives up far less aroma.

Made with this tea

The Shorter Mug

How to make The Shorter Mug with McVitie's Dark Chocolate Digestives.

4 min 1 serving Easy
You'll need
  • 1 bag standard black tea
  • 200ml water at a full boil
  • 2 dark chocolate digestives
  • A proper splash of milk
Method
  1. Brew one bag in 200ml straight off the boil for three to four minutes, not five. This is the reverse of the plain digestive instruction and it is deliberate.
  2. Add a proper splash of milk, which softens the tannin. Cocoa bitterness and tea tannin both read as dryness, and you can only control one of them.
  3. Add sugar if you take it. This is the one chocolate biscuit where a sugared cup is defensible.
  4. Take two and stop; the dry finish makes a third less tempting anyway.
The Medium-Roast Coffee

How to make The Medium-Roast Coffee with McVitie's Dark Chocolate Digestives.

4 min 1 serving Easy
You'll need
  • 1 cup medium-roast black coffee
  • 2 dark chocolate digestives
Method
  1. Brew a medium roast rather than a dark one and leave it black.
  2. Serve the biscuits at room temperature beside it.
  3. Notice the reinforcement: roast and cocoa share aromatic ground, so the chocolate reads fuller rather than competing.
  4. Avoid a very dark roast, which stacks bitterness on bitterness exactly as an over-steeped tea does.

What you'll end up with: The pairing that makes the most of a dark coating, and the reason to buy this version over the milk one.

The Evening Rooibos

How to make The Evening Rooibos with McVitie's Dark Chocolate Digestives.

6 min 1 serving Easy
You'll need
  • 1 bag rooibos
  • 200ml water at about 95 degrees
  • 2 dark chocolate digestives
Method
  1. Steep five to six minutes; rooibos does not turn bitter with time, so err long.
  2. Leave it unsweetened and without milk. Its own soft natural sweetness is the point.
  3. Eat the biscuits alongside rather than dunked.

What you'll end up with: Almost no tannin against a dry cocoa finish, which makes this the best evening pairing for this particular biscuit rather than a consolation.

No-Bake Dark Fridge Slice

How to make a No-Bake Dark Fridge Slice with McVitie's Dark Chocolate Digestives.

20 min + chill 12 squares Easy
You'll need
  • 200g dark chocolate digestives, broken
  • 100g butter
  • 150g dark chocolate
  • 50g chopped dried fruit, optional
Method
  1. Break the biscuits by hand into rough pieces so the wholemeal crumb keeps its texture.
  2. Melt the butter and chocolate together gently and take the pan off the heat before folding anything in.
  3. Fold the pieces through, with dried fruit if you want a sweeter result; the biscuits are not bringing much sugar of their own.
  4. Press into a lined tin and chill three hours before cutting.

What you'll end up with: A less sugary fridge slice than the milk version gives you, where the cocoa and the wholemeal both stay legible.

The Second Pack Rule

How to store McVitie's Dark Chocolate Digestives once the carton is open.

1 min 532g carton Easy
You'll need
  • The opened pack
  • A clip or an airtight tin
  • A cool steady cupboard, not the fridge
Method
  1. Leave the second 266g pack sealed until you need it; that is the twin pack's real argument.
  2. Clip or decant the open one and keep it away from anything strongly scented.
  3. Avoid a warm cupboard, where the coating softens and can set with a pale bloom once it cools.
  4. Skip the fridge, which costs you the aroma that a dark coating is mostly bought for.

What you'll end up with: One minute of housekeeping, and the difference between two good packs and one good pack.

Safety and purity

What’s in it, what to know

Ingredients and dietary suitabilityCheck the current UK pack before purchase; formulations and allergen advice can change.
On the nameThe word digestive is a Victorian survival, not a health claim. We are not suggesting this biscuit aids digestion, and neither is anything on this page.
Allergen warningThis is a wheat biscuit and it contains gluten.
Pack weightTwo packs of 266g, so 532g to the carton. That total is worked out from the twin-pack description rather than a figure read off a pack.
StorageKeep the carton cool, dry and steady. A warm cupboard softens the chocolate and, once it cools, can leave a pale film on the surface: that is fat that has migrated outward and recrystallised, a change in appearance and mouthfeel rather than a sign the biscuit has spoiled.
Child safetyKeep the kettle and the hot mug out of reach of children while you brew.
Formulations change; the current UK pack is always the final word on ingredients and allergens.

Pack: McVitie's Digestives Dark Chocolate Twin Pack Biscuits, 2 x 266g 532g; a carton holding two separately wrapped 266g packs of wholemeal digestives with a dark chocolate layer on one face. Best before the date printed on the pack.

Sourcing & blend. McVitie's Dark Chocolate Digestives are made by McVitie's, one of the best-known names in British biscuit baking, and the chocolate digestive is the line the brand is most identified with. That is heritage rather than a claim about where this carton was made or what is in it. The carton you receive is the current UK retail pack rather than an import made to a different recipe for another market. The account of cocoa solids carrying bitterness and aroma while sugar and dairy soften both is general food science, and the reading of this version as the one that lets the wholemeal base speak is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description.

What is in McVitie's Digestives Dark Chocolate Twin Pack Biscuits, 2 x 266g 532g, and what is not:

  • In: two sealed 266g packs of wholemeal digestive biscuits with a dark chocolate layer across one face, 532g in all, in one outer carton.
  • Not fully coated: the chocolate is on one side only, which is why this still eats as a biscuit rather than as confectionery. That is a description of the format rather than a claim off the pack.
  • Not the sweeter one: the milk chocolate twin pack is the softer, sweeter and easier biscuit. This is the drier, more bitter reading.
