Costa Coffee Latte Pods: One Pod, One Latte

The number to understand on this box is ten: ten pods, ten lattes. The machine maker's own milk drinks use a coffee capsule and a separate milk capsule for each cup, so an all-in-one pod goes further than the box size suggests.

Costa Coffee Latte Pods: One Pod, One Latte, in summary: Ten all-in-one latte pods for Nescafe Dolce Gusto machines, each holding coffee and milk powder, so one pod makes one drink. Stop at the fill line, run it shorter for strength, and brew into a jug for iced.

The number to understand on this box is ten: ten pods, ten lattes. The machine maker's own milk drinks use a coffee capsule and a separate milk capsule for each cup, so an all-in-one pod goes further than the box size suggests.

Coffee and milk in the same pod

Each 16g pod carries both the coffee and the milk, the milk in powdered form, so there is nothing to keep cold and no frother to clean. The published allergen information says it contains milk and may contain gluten, nuts and soya, so anyone avoiding dairy should choose something else. Everything is mixed before it reaches the cup, so the result is the same every time.

The flavour is Costa's house coffee adjusted to hold up in milk: a medium roast with a little cocoa in the middle, sweetened enough to read as a latte rather than a dessert. The trade-off of one pod per drink is looks. A single pod cannot build the separate layers of a two-capsule drink, so you get a softer, rounder cup with only a light crema.

Getting the cup you want

Volume is the only control an all-in-one pod gives you. Let the machine run only to the fill line shown for the pod, not to the top of the mug, because extra water thins the coffee and the milk at once. For a stronger cup, stop a little before the line; a shorter pour concentrates the drink and moves it towards a flat white.

For an iced latte, make it into a jug on the short setting, give it a stir and only then pour it over plenty of ice. Pouring the hot drink directly over ice waters it down as it lands, and a glass with only a few cubes melts quicker than a full one. It is a weekday-morning box at heart, for when the choice is a quick coffee or none.

Which machine, and which Costa pod

These are compatible pods designed for the Nescafe Dolce Gusto system rather than capsules made by the machine's own manufacturer. A Nespresso or Tassimo machine will not take them, and no adapter will make them fit, so be sure which system is on your worktop before you order. For a Nespresso machine, Costa's Smooth Decaf Lungo pods are the brand's Nespresso-compatible line in our range.

Within Costa's range the closest relative is the One Cappuccino pod for the same Dolce Gusto system, so a household with one machine can keep both in the drawer. Beside the brand's bean and ground bags, this is the convenience end: no grinder, no milk jug, one pod and a button, and a recognisable version of the latte you might order across a counter.

FAQ

Do Costa Latte pods need a separate milk capsule? No. Each pod holds coffee and milk powder together, so one pod makes one latte.

Which machine do Costa Latte pods fit? A Nescafe Dolce Gusto machine. They do not fit Nespresso or Tassimo machines.

Are Costa Latte pods dairy-free? No. The published allergen information says the pods contain milk, and they may contain gluten, nuts and soya.

How can I make a pod latte stronger? Stop the machine a little before the pod's fill line; less water gives a denser cup.

Can I make an iced latte with these pods? Yes. Run it on a short fill into a jug, stir, and pour that over plenty of ice rather than brewing straight onto it.

Curator's note: Stop it just short of the line and you get a fuller cup than the default. It is the box for mornings when the choice is this or nothing, and it wins that argument easily. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
