Hazelnut is the one ingredient that changes both who can eat this Blue Riband and what it tastes like. It adds a roasted, faintly bitter note to a very sweet bar, and it makes the allergen panel the first thing to read.
What the hazelnut changes
Wafer layers give a bar its structure and very little flavour, so whatever goes on and between them has to do the work. In this Blue Riband that means milk chocolate and hazelnut. Roasted hazelnut adds a slightly oily, gently bitter note that the milk chocolate cannot supply, and it lands mid-bite, once the sugar has registered and just before the wafer gives way.
The published ingredient list is led by sugar and wheat flour, followed by vegetable fats, cocoa butter, milk ingredients and cocoa mass, with hazelnuts at one per cent. It is a small amount, but it is enough to make the finish last a little longer than on the plain bar. The result is sweeter than the Original and a little more interesting, and in a house where nuts are not an issue we think it is the better of the two.
Read the pack before the lunchbox
The label states that this bar contains wheat, milk and hazelnuts, and that it may contain peanuts and soya. So it is not the six-pack to send into a school with a nut policy, a shared office tin or a household managing a nut allergy. The Original and the Vanilla White carry may-contain warnings for nuts as well, so whichever bar you choose, the current pack is the final word.
Where nuts are not a concern, the format is practical. The 108g multipack holds six individually wrapped bars of about eighteen grams, so opening the outer box does not start the clock on the rest. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard. If the chocolate turns pale and dull, it has been too warm and set again; that bloom is harmless, though it will not go back to how it was.
Why this is the one for coffee
Of the Blue Riband bars, this is our pick for a coffee break. The roasted note of the hazelnut sits naturally with coffee, and a black cup supplies the bitterness the bar lacks. A plain black filter or a short espresso both work. Strong tea without sugar is the next best partner; hot chocolate is the one to avoid, as it only piles sweetness on sweetness.
Keep it out of the mug. Dipped in hot coffee, the coating turns soft while the thin layers inside go soggy, and the bar gives way in one go rather than softening bit by bit. Take a bite, then a mouthful of coffee, and let the roasted note do its work between the two. If you would rather have the wafer without the hazelnut, the plain Original is the one to pick.

FAQ
Does Blue Riband Milk Chocolate Hazelnut contain nuts? Yes. The published label lists hazelnuts, along with wheat and milk, and warns that it may contain peanuts and soya.
How much does each hazelnut bar weigh? About eighteen grams: the 108g multipack is split into six wrapped bars.
How is it different from the Original? This version names milk chocolate and hazelnut, which makes it sweeter with a longer, roasted finish. The Original is the plainer bar.
Why has my bar gone pale? It has been warm and set again. The bloom is harmless, but store the box somewhere cool to keep the snap.
What should I drink with a hazelnut wafer? Black coffee first, then strong tea without sugar. Leave hot chocolate for another day.
Curator's note: Keep these for the coffee break rather than the tea tray. With a strong black cup, the hazelnut finally has something to talk to. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
