belVita Chocolate Chip Bars: The Breakfast Biscuit Explained

belVita Chocolate Chip is a breakfast biscuit, which is a different animal from anything that belongs in a tea tin. It is built for the morning with no time to sit down, and it only makes sense judged against that.

belVita Chocolate Chip Bars: The Breakfast Biscuit Explained, in summary: A grain-led breakfast biscuit, not a tea biscuit: five wholegrains, sparse chocolate chips, dense and very dry, sealed in five 45g portions. Give it a three-second dunk in coffee or strong tea, or eat it with cold milk.

belVita Chocolate Chip is a breakfast biscuit, which is a different animal from anything that belongs in a tea tin. It is built for the morning with no time to sit down, and it only makes sense judged against that.

From Petit Déjeuner to belVita

The range began in France in 1998 as LU Petit Déjeuner and took the belVita name in 2010, when it launched in Brazil. Made by Mondelēz International, it now runs to more than 20 varieties in over 50 countries. The shared idea is a cereal biscuit made with five wholegrains, portion-packed and, as the brand states, made with no colours or preservatives.

On this label the five are easy to find: wholegrain wheat, oat flakes, wholegrain barley, wholegrain rye and wholegrain spelt, with ordinary wheat flour alongside. The brand says it uses Harmony wheat, from the European sustainable wheat programme Mondelēz began in 2008. Grain leads the ingredient list, sugar and chocolate chips follow, and that order is the character of the biscuit.

Built for the train, not the tea tray

Most biscuits are designed for a sit-down moment with a cup. This one is designed for the commute, the school run or the first hour at a desk. That brief explains the build: a compact, press-baked biscuit that will not crumble in a pocket, one sealed 45g portion per pack, five packs to the box, and grain doing most of the work that butter and sugar do elsewhere.

The chocolate chips are small and thinly spread, there to make the grain easier going first thing, not to turn it into a chocolate biscuit. Among the belVita lines we stock, the Milk & Cereal bars share this 5 x 45g format, the Sandwich Chocolate Hazelnut adds a filling and the Soft Bakes Golden Oats are chewier.

The three-second dunk

This is one biscuit that improves in the cup. The dense bake keeps its shape while the crumb soaks up a little of the drink, and a biscuit this dry badly needs that, so three seconds in a coffee or a strong tea turns it from hard going into breakfast. Any longer and you are fishing. A glass of cold milk does the most of all, softening the crumb as you go rather than just washing it down.

Coffee is the natural first partner: both are morning things, and a roasted cup suits a toasted, grainy bake. Tea works too, as long as it is a sturdy breakfast blend with milk rather than something delicate. Keep unopened packs somewhere cool and dry; each seal keeps its portion crisp until it is wanted, and an opened pack is best finished there and then.

FAQ

What is a breakfast biscuit? A dense, grain-led biscuit packed in single portions for eating on the move. It is drier and less sweet than a tea biscuit and is built for mornings with no time to sit down.

Which five wholegrains are in belVita Chocolate Chip? Wheat, oats, barley, rye and spelt, all named in the published ingredient list for this barcode.

Should you dunk belVita? Yes, briefly. About three seconds lets the dense crumb take up some coffee or tea without falling apart.

Is belVita Chocolate Chip very chocolatey? No. The chips are small and sparse, and grain is the main flavour. If chocolate is the point, another biscuit will serve you better.

What allergens does the label list? Per the published ingredient list for this barcode it contains wheat, barley, rye and oats (gluten), milk and soya, and it may contain nuts and sesame. Check the current UK pack before buying.

Curator's note: Stop measuring it against the biscuit tin and treat it as breakfast you can carry. Three seconds in a strong coffee and it earns its place. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
