Starbucks by Nespresso Blonde Espresso Roast Coffee, 10 Pods
Blonde is a roast colour. It is not a strength setting, it is not a beginner's version of anything, and it is not less caffeine. Stopping the roast early keeps the bean's brightness and its own sweetness while giving up body and a great deal of forgiveness, which makes this the least forgiving capsule Starbucks puts in a box. Citrus, light grain, a short sweet finish with almost nothing bitter on it. Use a warmed cup and filtered water or it will read sour, and the coffee will get the blame for the cup. Black is where it belongs.
Starbucks by Nespresso Blonde Espresso Roast Coffee, in brief.
Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast by Nespresso is the lightest roast in the Starbucks at-home capsule range, made for Nespresso original-line machines, picked into the Teas.co.uk selection as the plain blonde base the rest of that family is built on.
Machine fit: Nespresso original-line capsules. Not Vertuo, not Dolce Gusto, not Tassimo. Check the current UK pack against your machine before buying.
A ten capsule box. Blonde is a roast colour, not a strength setting: it is bright, sweet and light-bodied, with very little roast bitterness, and it is not a low-caffeine coffee.
Roasting is a continuous trade. Every minute longer in the drum builds body, crema and roast-derived bitterness, and burns away the bean's own acidity and much of its origin character. Stop early, as a blonde roast does, and you keep brightness, the coffee's own sweetness and whatever the bean brought with it, at the cost of weight and of a great deal of forgiveness. Stop late and you get the opposite. Neither end is better coffee. They are different coffees made from the same beans.
This is the ten capsule box. It is a Nespresso-system capsule made under the at-home partnership between Starbucks and Nespresso, so it is an official original-line capsule rather than a third-party compatible.

Blonde Does Not Mean Weak
Three separate things get collapsed into the word strong, and untangling them is most of what you need to know about this capsule. The first is roast colour, which is how dark the bean is. The second is concentration, which is how much coffee ends up in how much water, and which is set by the dose and the volume you pull rather than by the roast.
A blonde roast is lighter in colour and lighter in body. Pulled short on the espresso setting it is every bit as concentrated as a dark roast pulled the same way, and it is not a decaf. What it is not is heavy, and it is the absence of that familiar weight that gets read as weakness. If you have tried a blonde capsule and found it thin, the likeliest cause is that it was pulled long, brewed through a machine that needed descaling, or poured into a cold cup. All three punish a light roast far more than a dark one.
Machine fit: these are capsules for Nespresso original-line machines. They are not Vertuo capsules, and they are not Dolce Gusto or Tassimo pods, which are a different system entirely. Check the pack against your own machine before buying.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; capsules, the card outer and any film can each require a different disposal route, and some capsule ranges run their own return schemes.
There is a reason dark blends dominate the capsule market, and it is not that people prefer them. Roast character is robust: it survives hard water, a cool cup, a machine overdue a descale and a shot pulled a bit long, because the roast is loud enough to cover all of it. Origin character is delicate, and a blonde roast is mostly origin character. Everything the machine does wrong is audible in the cup.
That cuts both ways. It means a blonde capsule is the one most worth buying a water filter for, and it also means it rewards the small habits more visibly than any other coffee in the range. Warm the cup, descale on schedule, use fresh filtered water, keep the shot short. Do those four things and this is the most interesting capsule Starbucks make. Skip them and it will taste sour, and the coffee will get the blame.
Getting a Consistent Cup
- Descale on schedule: scale drops brewing temperature, and an under-extracted light roast reads sour rather than weak. This is the most common complaint and the easiest fix.
- Blank shot first: if the machine has stood overnight, run 50ml of plain water through it before the first capsule.
- Filter the water: on this capsule a filter jug does more for the cup than switching brand.
- Do not pull it long: if you want a mug, pull a normal shot and add hot water, or use two capsules.
- Iced: two capsules pulled short over a full glass of ice, then cold water or milk. Blonde roast makes a noticeably cleaner iced coffee than a dark one.
- Caffeine note: this is a regular caffeinated capsule, and a lighter roast is not a lower-caffeine one. A decaf version of the same roast exists separately.
- Best with: buttered toast, a plain croissant, lemon drizzle cake, or on its own first thing.

The taste profile
How does it compare
A blonde roast is the one capsule where technique genuinely changes the cup. Four things matter: water, volume, cup temperature and the state of the machine.
The Straight Blonde Shot
The Blonde Flat White
Made with this tea
The Straight Blonde Shot
How to make The Straight Blonde Shot with Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast by Nespresso.
- 1 capsule Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast
- Fresh filtered water in the tank
- A warmed espresso cup
- Warm the cup with a blank shot of hot water and tip it away. Skip this and a light roast reads sour.
- Extract one capsule on the espresso setting, around 40ml. Do not pull it long.
- Drink it black, and drink it promptly rather than nursing it.
- The aroma is the first thing to go if it stands.
What you'll end up with: A bright, sweet, clean shot with almost no bitterness. This is the cup the roast level exists for, and the honest test of whether the style suits you.
The Americano Done Properly
How to make The Americano Done Properly with Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast by Nespresso.
- 1 capsule Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast
- 120ml hot water, separately
- A warmed mug
- Pour 120ml of hot water into the warmed mug first.
- Extract one capsule on the espresso setting straight into it, around 40ml.
- Coffee into water, not water into coffee; it keeps the crema intact.
- Never make this by pulling the capsule long. That is a different, worse drink.
What you'll end up with: A mug-sized coffee that still tastes like the shot it came from. Dilution after extraction is the whole trick, and it matters most on a light roast.
Two Shot Blonde Flat White
How to make Two Shot Blonde Flat White with Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast by Nespresso.
- 2 capsules Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast
- 120ml milk, dairy or oat
- A warmed 200ml cup
- Pull two capsules on the espresso setting into the warmed cup. Two, because one vanishes under milk.
- Texture 120ml of milk to a smooth microfoam rather than stiff foam.
- Pour through the centre from a low height so the milk folds in.
- Keep the cup small. More milk than this and the brightness is gone.
What you'll end up with: A sweeter, brighter milk coffee than a dark roast gives, with no roast bitterness underneath it. Worth the second capsule.
Iced Blonde Americano
How to make Iced Blonde Americano with Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast by Nespresso.
- 2 capsules Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast
- A full glass of ice
- 100ml cold water
- Fill a tall glass with ice to the top, not halfway.
- Pull two capsules short straight over the ice so they chill on contact.
- Top with 100ml of cold water and stir once.
- This is the format the blonde roast is best at. Cold flatters brightness and punishes roast weight.
What you'll end up with: A noticeably cleaner iced coffee than a dark capsule makes, with the sweetness intact and none of the ashy edge.
Overnight Blonde Coffee Jug
How to make Overnight Blonde Coffee Jug with Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast by Nespresso.
- 4 capsules Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast
- A lidded jug
- A strip of orange peel
- Pull four capsules on the espresso setting into a jug and cool to room temperature.
- Drop in a strip of orange peel, cover, and chill overnight.
- Remove the peel in the morning and serve over ice across the next two days.
- The citrus meets the coffee's own acidity rather than fighting it.
What you'll end up with: Four cold coffees from one six minute job, with the orange lifting exactly the note the light roast kept.
Blonde Coffee Granita
How to make Blonde Coffee Granita with Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast by Nespresso.
- 4 capsules Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast
- 2 tablespoons caster sugar
- Single cream, to serve
- Pull four capsules into a shallow dish and stir the sugar in while the coffee is still hot.
- Freeze for an hour, then rake the whole surface with a fork.
- Repeat the raking every 45 minutes until it is loose crystals throughout, about three times.
- Serve in small glasses with a spoonful of cream poured over.
What you'll end up with: A coffee granita that tastes of coffee rather than of roast. The light roast is what keeps it from turning bitter once frozen and sweetened.
Brewing the perfect cup
Inside the pack
| Component | Proportion | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Roasted and ground coffee | 100% | The only thing in the capsule. No added flavouring, no sweetener, no preservative, no filler. |
| Roast level | The roast is stopped early, so the cup keeps the bean's own acidity and sweetness rather than gaining roast weight and roast bitterness. |
Pack: Starbucks by Nespresso Blonde Espresso Roast Coffee, 10 Pods; caffeinated capsules for Nespresso original-line machines. Go by the best before date printed on the pack.
Sourcing & blend. Starbucks by Nespresso Blonde Espresso Roast Coffee, 10 Pods is made under the at-home partnership between Starbucks and Nespresso, so it is an official original-line capsule rather than a third-party compatible. It is the plain blonde base of that family: the same roast level that sits under the flavoured blonde capsules in the range, with nothing laid on top of it. Blending is what makes a light roast repeatable, because a roaster building to a fixed house target can adjust the components as crops change, and a light roast gives away far more when a component drifts than a dark one does. That is the quiet reason a blonde capsule is harder to produce consistently as well as harder to brew.
What's in Starbucks by Nespresso Blonde Espresso Roast Coffee, 10 Pods, and what isn't:
- In: roasted and ground coffee at a blonde roast level, ground and dosed for a short espresso extraction. Nothing else.
- No artificial flavourings, colours, preservatives or added sugar: the sweetness in the cup is the coffee's own, which is most of the point of stopping the roast early.
- Not decaffeinated: this is a regular caffeinated coffee, and a lighter roast is not a lower-caffeine one. A decaf version of the same roast is sold separately.
- Capsule and carton: capsule, card outer and any film can each take a different disposal route, and some ranges run their own return schemes. Follow the current UK pack and your local-authority guidance.
