LCurator note · Goplana
There are no pieces of nut in this, and there is not meant to be. Hazelnut is a flavour worked into a smooth cream rather than a texture, so whoever read the wrapper and expected crunch has the disappointment arriving early. Take it for what it is and it is a coat-pocket bar, better eaten standing up than laid on a plate next to a proper biscuit, where the comparison does it no favours. It contains hazelnut and it is coated in milk chocolate, which puts it out for a nut-free house and out for a dairy-free one.

About this product

Goplana Grzeski Milk Chocolate-Coated Wafer Bar With Hazelnut Cream, in brief.

Goplana Grzeski Milk Chocolate-Coated Wafer Bar With Hazelnut Cream is a single 36g wafer bar from a Polish confectioner, picked into the Teas.co.uk curator selection as the pocket bar in our range: the wafer format that survives being carried.

The coating makes the format work: a bare wafer turns leathery within days, while one sealed in chocolate holds its snap for weeks in a bag. The hazelnut is what separates it from the cocoa cream version, a roasted, faintly savoury depth giving the sugar something to work against. It contains hazelnut and milk chocolate, so it suits neither a nut-free nor a dairy-free diet.

The hazelnut is what separates this bar from the cocoa cream version beside it on our shelf, and the difference is larger than the name suggests. Cocoa in a filling and cocoa in a coating give you the same flavour family twice, so nothing in that bar pushes back against the sugar. A roasted nut cream brings something else entirely: a savoury, faintly bitter, oily depth that arrives after the sweetness rather than alongside it. The result is the more interesting of the two bars and the easier one to finish.

The Story Behind Goplana

Goplana is a Polish chocolate name and Grześki bars are a fixture of their own confectionery aisle rather than an import invented for export. In the UK they turn up in world-foods sections and in the impulse fixture beside the till, which is exactly where a 36g bar belongs.

Two things on the wrapper we do repeat, because the brand names them on the front and both matter for safety. It contains hazelnut, so it is not suitable for anyone avoiding nuts. It is coated in milk chocolate, so it is not suitable for a vegan or dairy-free diet.

Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.

What You Are Actually Buying

  • What the coating buys: keeping quality. A bare wafer sheet is porous and sits far drier than the air around it, so it goes leathery within days of a pack being opened. Sealed in chocolate it survives a bag or a glovebox for weeks, which is why this format exists at all.
  • Contains hazelnut and milk: both are named on the front of the pack, and both are stated here rather than hedged, because the cautious direction is the honest one.
  • What it is not: not a sharing format, not a dunking biscuit and not a dark chocolate product. The pack says milk chocolate.

Ideal Serving Conditions

A roasted nut cream under milk chocolate is sweet, but it is not one-dimensional in the way an all-cocoa bar is, and that widens what you can drink with it. You still want something unsweetened, but you do not have to reach for the darkest thing in the cupboard.

The Coffee Break

  • Black, medium roast: hazelnut and coffee are one of the oldest pairings there is, and a medium roast meets the nut rather than burying it. A very dark roast works but flattens the filling.
  • No sugar in the cup: the filling and the coating have both brought plenty. Sugar in the coffee buries the nut first and the cocoa second.
  • Skip the flavoured syrups: particularly hazelnut syrup, which turns the whole break into one note.
  • Espresso and a bar: the natural pairing for a 36g portion and the one that suits a mid-morning break.

The Tea Break

  • Strong black tea: an assam or a builder's brew. Tannin cuts the sugar and leaves the roasted note standing.
  • Black or barely milked: milk softens the astringency that is doing the work here. A splash at most.
  • Earl Grey is worth trying: bergamot against hazelnut and milk chocolate is better than people expect, and the citrus does some of the cutting.
  • Skip the fruit infusions: sweet beside sweet leaves nothing on the palate, and a berry infusion disappears completely against a nut cream.

Getting It Right in the Cup

  • Do not dunk it: the coating goes first, then the wafer collapses. Whatever you would do with a digestive, do not do with this.
  • Room temperature: cocoa butter gives up its aroma close to melting, and so do roasted nut oils, so a bar straight out of a cold bag reads waxy and muted for the first few seconds.
  • Keep it out of the sun: a coated bar left warm blooms grey and sets unevenly. Harmless, but the snap and the gloss both suffer.
  • Break rather than bite: wafer layers separate along their own lines, and breaking a bar gives you cleaner pieces than a bite does.
  • Best with: a black coffee mid-morning, or in a coat pocket, which is the job the coating was designed for.

Tasting notes

The taste profile

Hazelnut Cream●●●●○ 4/5
The named filling and the reason to pick this one. Roasted nut reads savoury under the sugar and lingers longer than cocoa does.
Milk Chocolate Coating●●●●○ 4/5
Sweet, soft and structural. Milk chocolate is named on the pack, so it is the one thing about the coating we can state.
Wafer Crispness●●●●○ 4/5
Protected by the coating rather than exposed, which is why this bar holds its snap far longer than an uncoated wafer does.
Sweetness●●●●○ 4/5
High, but with the nut doing something the cocoa cream version has nothing to do: giving the palate a second thing to think about.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs Bahlsen Hazelnut Cream & Choc, 100gThe German take on the same nut-and-chocolate idea in a sharing pack rather than a single bar. That is a biscuit for a plate; this is a bar for a pocket.
vs Border Dark Chocolate Raspberry Biscuits, 150gA premium British biscuit with dark chocolate and fruit acidity doing the balancing. Where this bar uses a roasted nut to cut the sugar, that one uses sharpness. Both work; they are different solutions to the same problem.

Goplana Grzeski Milk Chocolate-Coated Wafer Bar With Hazelnut Cream, 36g is one sealed bar rather than a pack to serve from, so the useful builds are about what goes beside it and what to do when a few have accumulated in the cupboard. Five below cover the coffee break, the tea tray, a lunchbox habit, a no-bake pudding and an ice cream.

Espresso and a Bar

How to make Espresso and a Bar with Goplana Grzeski Hazelnut Cream Wafer Bar.

4 min 1 person Easy
You'll need
  • 1 Goplana Grzeski hazelnut cream bar
  • A black medium-roast coffee
  • A glass of water
Method
  1. Choose a medium roast rather than the darkest thing in the cupboard. Hazelnut and coffee agree with each other, but a very dark roast buries the nut instead of meeting it.
  2. Take the bar out of a cold bag a few minutes early so the cocoa butter and the nut oils are close to melting when you eat it.
  3. Break the bar rather than biting it, along the wafer layers, which gives cleaner pieces and keeps the coating attached.
  4. Drink it unsweetened. The filling and the coating have both brought sugar already.

What you'll end up with: The mid-morning break this bar was designed for, with the one adjustment that matters: no sugar in the cup.

The Tea Tray Version

How to make The Tea Tray Version with Goplana Grzeski Hazelnut Cream Wafer Bar.

5 min 2 people Easy
You'll need
  • 2 Goplana Grzeski hazelnut cream bars
  • A pot of strong black tea, assam or a builder's brew
  • A splash of milk, optional
Method
  1. Brew the tea strong. You are using tannin to cut two layers of sweetness, and a weak pot cannot do it.
  2. Keep the milk to a splash at most. Milk softens exactly the astringency that is doing the work.
  3. Break each bar into three or four pieces and put them on a plate rather than handing over whole bars, which makes a 36g portion go further.
  4. Try an Earl Grey once. Bergamot against hazelnut and milk chocolate is better than people expect.

What you'll end up with: A tea tray where a small bar does the work of a much larger biscuit, and the pairing worth trying before you settle on a builder's brew.

The Lunchbox and Coat Pocket Habit

How to make The Lunchbox and Coat Pocket Habit with Goplana Grzeski Hazelnut Cream Wafer Bar.

1 min 1 bar Easy
You'll need
  • 1 Goplana Grzeski hazelnut cream bar
  • A lunchbox, bag or coat pocket
Method
  1. Put the bar in whole and sealed. This is the one thing on our biscuit shelf built for exactly this and it needs no container.
  2. Keep it out of a car in summer and away from a radiator. Warmth makes the coating bloom grey and lose its snap.
  3. Remember the hazelnut if the box is going into a school. Many schools are nut-free and this bar names hazelnut on the front.
  4. Do not decant it into a tub. Once the wrapper is open the coating is the only thing keeping the wafer crisp, and it can only do so much.

What you'll end up with: The job the chocolate coating was invented for, plus the one check to make before a nut-filled bar goes anywhere near a school.

No-Bake Hazelnut Wafer Slice

How to make No-Bake Hazelnut Wafer Slice with Goplana Grzeski Hazelnut Cream Wafer Bar.

20 min + chill 12 squares Easy
You'll need
  • 6 Goplana Grzeski hazelnut cream bars
  • 200g dark chocolate
  • 50g butter
  • A handful of toasted hazelnuts
Method
  1. Chop the bars into rough chunks rather than crumbs, so the wafer layers stay visible in the finished slice.
  2. Melt the dark chocolate with the butter and let it cool for two minutes off the heat.
  3. Fold the chunks and the toasted hazelnuts through, press into a lined tin and chill until firm.
  4. Use dark chocolate, not milk. It is the only bitterness in the whole traybake and without it the slice is relentless.

What you'll end up with: A traybake with two textures and two chocolates in it, and the best use for bars that have been in the cupboard long enough to lose their novelty.

Crushed Through Vanilla Ice Cream

How to make Crushed Through Vanilla Ice Cream with Goplana Grzeski Hazelnut Cream Wafer Bar.

10 min + freeze 4 people Easy
You'll need
  • 3 Goplana Grzeski hazelnut cream bars
  • 500ml vanilla ice cream
  • A pinch of flaky salt
Method
  1. Soften the ice cream for ten minutes, just enough to stir without melting it.
  2. Crush the bars into pieces and fold them through quickly, keeping the chunks large.
  3. Add a pinch of flaky salt, which is what a roasted nut and a milk chocolate both want and neither has enough of.
  4. Refreeze for an hour before serving, so the wafer pieces firm up again.

What you'll end up with: A hazelnut ice cream made in ten minutes, where the wafer stays crisp because the chocolate coating is keeping the moisture out.

What’s in it, what to know

Contains hazelnutThe filling is named as a hazelnut cream on the front of the pack, so this product is not suitable for anyone avoiding nuts.

NutritionA coated wafer is a sweet product by construction, but the numbers belong to the panel on the wrapper.
On the brandGoplana is a Polish chocolate name with a long presence in its own confectionery aisle, which is heritage rather than a statement about where this bar was made or what is in it.
Formulations change; the current UK pack is always the final word on ingredients and allergens.

Inside the pack

ComponentProportionWhat it brings
Hazelnut cream fillingnamed on the front of the pack; quantity not statedThe reason to choose this bar over the cocoa cream version. Roasted nut brings a savoury, faintly bitter, oily depth that arrives after the sweetness rather than alongside it, giving the sugar something to work against. It also means the product contains nuts.
Milk chocolate coatingnamed on the front of the pack; quantity not statedSweet, soft and structural. It is the second flavour element and the one doing the engineering: it seals a porous wafer against the air. Milk is named, which is why this is not a dairy-free product.
Pack format36g, one bar

Pack: Goplana Grzeski Milk Chocolate-Coated Wafer Bar With Hazelnut Cream, 36g; one sealed 36g wafer bar with a hazelnut cream filling and a milk chocolate coating. Store cool, dry and out of direct sun, because a coated bar left warm blooms grey and sets unevenly. Read the net weight, the ingredient list, the nutrition panel, the allergen advice, the country of origin and the best-before date off the current UK wrapper.

Characterising components shown. Two things are stated without hedging because the brand names them on the pack front and both matter for safety: it contains hazelnut and it contains milk chocolate. The sensory placements are our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description; we have held no tastings and hold no brand specification sheets.
