Shrinking a cookie changes the bake, not just the portion. These Minis end up drier and snappier than the full-size Double Chocolate, and you taste more of the toasting as a result.
Size is an ingredient
A small biscuit has more rim for its volume than a large one, and the rim is where a bake browns hardest and gives up its moisture fastest. Scale the Maryland cocoa dough down to mini size and the whole cookie ends up drier and toastier than the full-size version. You get more snap, a little more roasted character and, proportionally, a little less of the chocolate.
The drier bake happens to flatter a cocoa dough, which already has a faint bitterness of its own. As on the full-size Double Chocolate, the dough itself is chocolate and the chips run through it, so these taste darker and slightly less sweet than the plain Choc Chip Minis, which come in the same six-bag box. The difference between the two boxes is the dough, not the bag.
Six bags, one at a time
The box holds 118.8g across six sealed bags, so each is 19.8g. The sealing is the real reason to buy it: a crisp cookie starts to soften as soon as air gets in, and the snap never returns, but here five bags stay closed while the sixth is eaten. That makes the box a natural fit for lunchboxes, desk drawers and days out.
It is the wrong box for a plate beside the teapot at home, where the 200g Double Chocolate sleeve makes more sense, and it loses its point entirely if the bags are emptied into a tin. The larger Minis Double Chocolate box has ten bags rather than six; choose that one if your household gets through a bag a day.
Dunking, and what to pour
At this size there is almost nothing to hold, so the dunking window is two seconds and not a moment more. Grip firmly and lift straight out; the chips soften first and decide when the dunk is over, and a mini that slips is a nuisance to fish out of a mug. We would rather eat these beside the cup than in it.
Our choice is a black tea of medium strength, three minutes in the pot, with just a little milk. The cocoa dough brings bitterness of its own, and piling a stewed, heavy brew on top only adds more of the same. A filter coffee works well, while a short espresso tends to flatten these cookies. Later in the day, a mellow Earl Grey rooibos is a gentle alternative.

FAQ
Why are mini cookies crunchier than full-size ones? A small cookie has more edge for its size, and the edge is where a bake dries and browns, so the whole mini ends up crisper.
Are the bags the same size as the Choc Chip Minis? Yes. Both boxes are 118.8g split six ways, so each bag is 19.8g; only the dough differs.
How do these differ from the plain Choc Chip Minis? The dough. Here it is chocolate, with chips through it, so it tastes darker and a little less sweet than the plain golden dough.
How do you dunk something this small? Quickly: two seconds at most, with a firm grip. There is no margin at this size.
Six bags or ten? Six suits a household that only needs a few portions; the ten-bag Minis Double Chocolate box suits one that gets through a bag a day.
Curator's note: These are a lunchbox cookie first and a teatime one second. If you do have one with a cup, make it a gentle tea and leave the espresso for another day. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
