Three processes are used commercially:

CO2 (carbon dioxide) decaf. Pressurised liquid CO2 selectively binds caffeine and removes it. No solvents, no chemical residue, minimal flavour loss. The premium method. Used by most premium UK brands (Twinings, Whittard, Clipper Organic).
Water process (Swiss water). Tea is soaked in water, the water is run through a carbon filter that removes caffeine, and the leaves are reintroduced to flavour rich water. No chemicals. Slightly more flavour loss than CO2. Used by some organic and ethical brands.

"Decaf tastes thin." Usually because you brewed it the same length as caffeinated. Add 30 seconds.
