LCurator note · Ryvita
The seeds leave a light oily finish that stays a moment after the crunch has gone, and a brisk black tea cuts straight through it, where a green or a delicate white gets flattened and you have wasted the leaf. The seeds themselves read nutty and faintly sweet as much as savoury, which puts this at eleven in the morning rather than at the end of a meal. Thin, so it snaps fast and high, and there is very little material holding a piece together. The front says multi seed and stops there.

About this product

Ryvita Thins Multi Seed Flatbread Crackers, in brief.

Ryvita Thins Multi Seed Flatbread Crackers is the thin seeded flatbread in the Ryvita range, 125g, picked into the Teas.co.uk curator selection as the toasted, snappy shard for a board or a light plate.

A Thin is not a crispbread. It is baked flat and hard, so it breaks with a fast high snap, toasts its seeds properly and softens the moment the pack is open. The seeds lead, the salt stays behind them, and a soft topping needs to go on gently and be eaten straight away.

The words that matter on the front are multi seed. What a seeded flatbread does in the mouth is a separate question the format answers on its own: seeds carry oil, oil browns hard in a thin bake, and the toasted character leading this cracker comes from that rather than from seasoning.

Curator notes: the tasting profile is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description. We run same-day UK dispatch on every order placed before 2pm Monday to Friday. Storage, how to load one without breaking it and how it differs from the crispbreads are in the detailed Q and A tab below.

The Story Behind Ryvita

Ryvita is the name most British shoppers attach to crispbread, and the Thins sit alongside that range rather than inside it. On our own shelf we list the thick crispbreads at 200g and 250g, the very light crackerbreads, the Thins in several seasonings and the Snack It bags built for eating out of the hand. Our reading of that shelf is that the crispbreads are a food in their own right, the crackerbreads are a platform, and the Thins are a snack that will accept a topping if you treat it gently. That is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description, not a specification handed to us.

The name tells us Thins, multi seed, flatbread and 125g. That restraint matters more here than on most shelves, because seeded crackers attract a great deal of loose diet and health talk.

Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.

What You Are Actually Buying

  • Weight: one hundred and twenty-five grams.
  • Thin means fast: a flatbread baked this thin has a great deal of surface for very little mass, which is why it snaps so cleanly, toasts so well and softens so quickly once the pack is open.
  • Seeded, not neutral: the seeds are the point of this one. If you want a cracker that contributes nothing and lets a topping lead completely, a crackerbread or a water cracker does that job better.
  • What it is not: not a crispbread, not a free-from line, and not a cracker that survives being carried loose in a bag.

Ideal Serving Conditions

Almost everything that goes right or wrong with a thin seeded flatbread follows from one fact: it is baked very flat and very dry, so it is hard, it is brittle, and it has a great deal of exposed surface for its weight.

The Board and the Topping

  • Soften whatever you spread: cold butter or fridge-cold soft cheese snaps a Thin before it spreads. Twenty minutes out of the fridge solves it.
  • Support it flat: hold the cracker on a palm or a plate while you load it. Held at one edge, a flatbread this thin breaks at the first stroke of a knife.
  • Keep the topping light and dry: this is a shard, not a plate. A thin cracker under a wet topping has a window of a few minutes, so build at the table rather than in advance.

The Storage Rules

  • Airtight on day one: a very thin bake takes moisture out of kitchen air faster than a thick one, because there is far more surface per gram for it to come in through.
  • A tin beats a clip: a resealed bag keeps some of the air out but none of the weight off, and these break under the crackers stacked above them. A rigid tin fixes both problems at once.
  • Reviving a soft one: a few minutes on a tray in a low oven brings the snap back, but watch them constantly. Something this thin, with oil-bearing seeds on it, colours in seconds rather than minutes, and it must cool flat before it is touched.

Getting It Right with a Hot Drink

  • Pairing: a brisk black tea. The toasted seed note has enough weight to sit against a proper builder's brew, and the tannin cuts the oiliness that toasted seeds leave behind.
  • Also good: a green tea if the topping is delicate, and a black coffee with a seeded cracker and cheese at the end of a meal.
  • Dunking: no. A flatbread this thin does not soften into a dunk, it collapses. Keep the cup beside the plate.
  • Best with: soft cheese, hummus, smoked fish, a board of hard cheese eaten dry, or nothing at all out of the pack.

Tasting notes

The taste profile

Seeded Toast●●●●○ 4/5
The lead note. A very thin bake browns seed oil properly, and that roasted, faintly nutty character is what you taste first and what lingers.
Salt●●○○○ 2/5
Restrained. Enough to season the grain behind the seeds, not enough to argue with anything you put on top.
Shard Snap●●●●● 5/5
Thin, flat and hard. It breaks with a fast high snap rather than the low crumbling crunch of a thicker cracker.
Versatility●●●○○ 3/5
Good on a board and under a soft topping, but it is seeded and it is fragile, so it cannot be the neutral base a plain cracker is.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs Ryvita Thins Rosemary & Sea Salt Flatbread Crackers, 125gThe same flatbread, seasoned with herb and salt instead of carrying seeds. The more aromatic board cracker; this one is quieter on seasoning and leads on toasted seed instead.
vs Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed & Oat Crackers, 200gThe seeded idea on the thick crispbread base rather than the thin one, in a bigger pack. Substantial and chewy-brittle where this is a fast hard shard. Buy that as lunch and this to hand round.
vs Jacob's Choice Grain Multigrain Crackers, 200gThe grain-forward table cracker from the other big name on this shelf. Thicker and sturdier, so it takes a firm topping and a sideways grip that this flatbread will not.

Ryvita Thins Multi Seed Flatbread Crackers, 125g is a snack first and a base second, so the builds below are light, dry and quick. Five cover the board, a soft cheese plate, a lunchbox pairing, a way to use a broken pack and the drink to have beside it.

Made with this tea

The Cheeseboard Shard

How to make The Cheeseboard Shard with Ryvita Thins Multi Seed.

5 min 4 people Easy
You'll need
  • 12 Ryvita Thins Multi Seed crackers
  • A hard cheese and a soft one
  • Grapes or sliced apple
  • A spoonful of chutney on the side
Method
  1. Lay the crackers out flat in a single layer rather than stacked, because they break under their own pile.
  2. Keep the chutney in a separate dish. A wet spoonful sitting on a thin flatbread softens it within minutes.
  3. Serve the soft cheese already out of the fridge for twenty minutes so nobody tears a cracker trying to spread it.
  4. Pair with a hard cheese eaten dry on the cracker: the toasted seed note handles a mature cheddar better than a plain cracker does.

What you'll end up with: A board where the cracker contributes something rather than just carrying, which is the whole argument for a seeded thin over a plain one.

Soft Cheese Without Breakage

How to make Soft Cheese Without Breakage with Ryvita Thins Multi Seed.

6 min 2 people Easy
You'll need
  • 8 Ryvita Thins Multi Seed crackers
  • A soft cream or curd cheese
  • Fresh chives or dill
  • Black pepper
Method
  1. Take the cheese out of the fridge twenty minutes early. Cold soft cheese is stiffer than the cracker and will snap it.
  2. Rest each cracker flat on a plate or your palm while you spread, never held at one edge.
  3. Spread from the middle outwards, which puts less bending force through the cracker than a long stroke end to end.
  4. Snip the herbs over, grind pepper and eat within a few minutes.

What you'll end up with: The classic plate, with the two bits of technique that decide whether you get eight crackers or sixteen pieces.

Desk Lunch Beside a Soup

How to make Desk Lunch Beside a Soup with Ryvita Thins Multi Seed.

4 min 1 bowl Easy
You'll need
  • 5 Ryvita Thins Multi Seed crackers
  • A bowl of soup
  • Softened butter
  • Black pepper
Method
  1. Butter the crackers before the soup arrives, with butter at room temperature and each cracker supported flat.
  2. Keep them clear of the steam coming off the bowl, which softens a thin flatbread from across the table.
  3. Choose a soup with some body. The toasted seed note holds up against a lentil or tomato soup and gets lost under a delicate one.
  4. Do not dunk. These collapse rather than soften.

What you'll end up with: A lunch where the cracker is the texture and the soup is the meal, ready in the time it takes to heat the bowl.

The Broken Pack Crumb

How to make The Broken Pack Crumb with Ryvita Thins Multi Seed.

10 min 1 tray Easy
You'll need
  • The broken half of a pack
  • 25g melted butter or a little oil
  • Black pepper
  • A baked dish that needs a topping
Method
  1. Crush the broken crackers in the bag with a rolling pin until they are coarse crumbs rather than dust.
  2. Stir through the melted butter or oil and a good grind of pepper.
  3. Scatter over a gratin, a baked fish or a macaroni cheese for the last ten minutes of the oven time.
  4. Watch it closely. Seed oil that has already been toasted once colours very quickly the second time.

What you'll end up with: The answer to the bottom of the packet, and a better savoury crumb than plain breadcrumbs because the seeds are already roasted.

Seeded Thin and a Brisk Brew

How to make Seeded Thin and a Brisk Brew with Ryvita Thins Multi Seed.

5 min 1 cup Easy
You'll need
  • 4 Ryvita Thins Multi Seed crackers
  • 1 bag of a strong everyday black tea
  • A splash of milk if you take it
  • A wedge of mature cheddar
Method
  1. Brew the tea in 250ml of just boiled water for four minutes so it comes out with real tannin behind it.
  2. Eat the crackers dry with the cheese, cracker and cheese together rather than one spread on the other.
  3. Drink between mouthfuls rather than after them. The tannin is doing a job on the toasted seed oil.
  4. Keep the cup beside the plate. Nothing about this cracker is improved by putting it in the tea.

What you'll end up with: The pairing this cracker is actually for: a seeded thin has enough weight to sit against a proper brew, which a plain water cracker does not.

ComponentProportionWhat it brings

Pack: Ryvita Thins Multi Seed Flatbread Crackers, 125g; thin seeded flatbread crackers, a distinct line from the thicker Ryvita crispbreads and the very light crackerbreads. Store cool, dry, dark and airtight, and move them to a rigid tin the day the pack is opened: a very thin bake has a great deal of surface for its weight, which is what lets moisture in, and the crackers are brittle enough to break under whatever is stacked on them. Read the net weight, the cracker count, the seed and ingredient list, the nutrition panel, the allergen advice and the best-before date off the current UK pack.

Characterising components shown. The distinction drawn between Thins, crackerbread and crispbread is our own editorial reading of three lines the brand sells separately. The sensory placements are our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description; we have held no tastings and hold no brand specification sheets.

Sourcing & blend. Ryvita Thins Multi Seed Flatbread Crackers, 125g is made by Ryvita, the name most British kitchens attach to crispbread, with the Thins sitting alongside that range rather than inside it. On our own shelf we list the thick crispbreads at 200g and 250g, the very light crackerbreads, the Thins in several seasonings and the Snack It bags built for eating out of the hand. Our reading is that the crispbreads are a food in their own right, the crackerbreads are a platform and the Thins are a snack that will take a light topping. That is our own editorial assessment and not a specification from the brand.

Product questions

Asked about this product

Thickness, and it changes everything. A crispbread is a thick slab you build a small meal on; a Thin is a flat hard shard closer to a snack. Our reading is that a crispbread is lunch and a Thin is something to hand round.
