LCurator note · Ryvita
This one does not deliver everything at once. A thin cracker gives you flavour and snap in the same instant, where a slab this thick takes several chews, so it arrives in order: cereal first, then the pumpkin seed as it is actually crushed and the oil is let out, then a faint oat sweetness sitting underneath. Salt stays right down throughout so that none of it gets covered over. The staging is also why a thick seeded slice tastes of one identifiable seed while a thin seeded cracker tastes of seeds in general. Oat is doing texture rather than flavour here, rougher than a fine flour and slightly chewier at the edge of the break. Seeds and oats are both named on the front and no allergen statement reaches us, so a seed allergy or a coeliac household should settle it on the box.

About this product

Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed & Oat Crackers, in brief.

Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed & Oat Crackers is the seeded slice in the thick Ryvita crispbread range, 200g.

A crispbread is a hard-baked slab with an open pitted interior, and that structure is why it cracks rather than snaps, grips a topping and survives something wet on it for minutes rather than seconds. Pumpkin seed is the flavour and oat is the texture.

A crispbread is not a cracker in the ordinary sense. It is a hard-baked slab with an open, pitted structure, substantial enough to be lunch in its own right rather than something handed round with drinks.

The two things named on the front do different jobs and it is worth separating them. Pumpkin seed is the flavour: a seed with enough oil in it to brown properly and enough size to be met individually rather than as a dusting. Oat is the texture: oats behave differently from a fine flour in a dry bake, giving a rougher, more open surface and a chewier edge to the brittleness.

Curator notes: the tasting profile is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description. We run same-day UK dispatch on every order placed before 2pm Monday to Friday. Storage, what it will carry and how it differs from the Original and Fruit Crunch slices are in the detailed Q and A tab below.

The Story Behind Ryvita

Ryvita is the name that made crispbread an ordinary part of British lunch, and the thick slices are the heart of that range rather than an offshoot. On our own shelf we list the Original and Dark Rye at 250g, a Multigrain and a Sesame, a Cracked Black Pepper, this Pumpkin Seed and Oat, a Fruit Crunch, the very light crackerbreads and the thin flatbread Thins. Our reading of that shelf is that the thick crispbreads are the food, the crackerbreads are a platform and the Thins are a snack. That is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description, not a specification handed to us.

The name tells us crispbread, pumpkin seed, oat and 200g. We make no health, weight, calorie, fibre or nutrition claim of any kind about this product.

What You Are Actually Buying

  • Thick means substantial: this is lunch rather than a snack. One or two slices with something on them is a meal, which is not true of anything thin on this shelf.
  • The open structure is the point: a pitted, gassy interior gives the crack, grips a topping and buys a genuine margin of minutes under something wet.
  • What it is not: not a crackerbread, not a board cracker for handing round, not a free-from line and not a diet product, whatever the category's marketing history suggests.

The Open Sandwich

  • It will take a wet topping: cottage cheese, sliced tomato, mashed avocado and a poached egg are all within range, because the open structure gives a real margin of minutes rather than seconds.
  • Press the topping in slightly: the pitted surface grips what you put on it, which is why a crispbread open sandwich holds together in the hand where a smooth cracker sheds everything.
  • Butter first if the topping is very wet: a thin layer of fat slows the absorption at the surface and buys you longer still.

The Storage Rules

  • Airtight after opening: that open interior is a great deal of surface hidden inside the slice, and surface is what takes moisture out of kitchen air.
  • A tin or a lidded tub: the inner wrapping stops the slices breaking but does not seal once opened. A rigid container fixes both problems.
  • Reviving a soft slice: a few minutes on a tray in a low oven brings the crack back. A thick slice is far more forgiving here than a thin one, but the seeds on it will still colour quickly, so watch it and let it cool flat.

Getting It Right with a Hot Drink

  • Pairing: a brisk black tea. The toasted seed and oat have real weight, and a tannic everyday brew cuts the oil that toasted seeds leave without flattening the grain note.
  • Also good: a green tea with a light topping such as cottage cheese and cucumber, and a black coffee with a savoury slice at breakfast.
  • Dunking: no. A crispbread will hold together in tea far longer than a thin cracker, which is exactly why it is worse: it goes sodden rather than dissolving.
  • Best with: cottage cheese, smoked mackerel, avocado, a poached egg, mature cheddar and pickle, or hummus and tomato.

Tasting notes

The taste profile

Toasted Seed●●●●○ 4/5
Pumpkin seed is large and oily enough to brown properly in a hot dry bake, which gives a clear roasted note rather than a general seediness.
Oat Character●●●●○ 4/5
Rougher and rounder than plain flour, with a faint natural sweetness behind the grain and a surface that grips a topping.
Hard Crack●●●●● 5/5
The crispbread signature. A thick dry slab with an open structure breaks with a genuine crack rather than a snap or a crumble.

How does it compare

vs Ryvita Crispbread Multigrain Crackers, 250gThe other grain-forward option in a bigger pack. Broader and more general; this one has a specific seed to taste rather than a blend of grains.
vs Ryvita Crispbread Fruit Crunch Currant Seed & Oat Crackers, 200gCurrants push it towards breakfast and away from cheese.

Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed & Oat Crackers, 200g is a base you build a meal on rather than a snack, so the builds below are proper open sandwiches and lunches. Six cover the cottage cheese classic, smoked fish, a poached egg, cheese and pickle, a tomato plate and the toasted crumb.

Made with this tea

Cottage Cheese, Cucumber and Pepper

How to make Cottage Cheese, Cucumber and Pepper with Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat.

5 min 2 people Easy
You'll need
  • 4 Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat slices
  • A tub of cottage cheese
  • Half a cucumber
  • Black pepper
Method
  1. Spoon the cottage cheese on generously and press it into the pitted surface, which is what holds an open sandwich together in the hand.
  2. Slice the cucumber very thinly and lay it over in overlapping rows.
  3. Grind pepper over and eat within a few minutes, though this base gives you longer than a thin cracker would.
  4. Add no salt: the toasted seed and oat already carry the plate.

What you'll end up with: The canonical crispbread lunch, and the clearest demonstration of what an open pitted structure is actually for.

Smoked Mackerel and Lemon

How to make Smoked Mackerel and Lemon with Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat.

6 min 2 people Easy
You'll need
  • 1 smoked mackerel fillet
  • 4 Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat slices
  • Half a lemon
  • Fresh dill or parsley
Method
  1. Flake the mackerel off the skin into rough pieces rather than mashing it into a pate.
  2. Press the flakes onto the slices so the rough surface grips them.
  3. Squeeze lemon over and scatter the herbs.
  4. Serve with a brisk black tea rather than anything delicate, because smoked fish and toasted seed together need cutting.

What you'll end up with: A lunch in six minutes where the base is oily enough and toasted enough to hold its own against smoked fish, which a plain cracker cannot.

Poached Egg on Crispbread

How to make Poached Egg on Crispbread with Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat.

8 min 1 plate Easy
You'll need
  • 2 Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat slices
  • 2 eggs
  • Softened butter
  • Salt and pepper
Method
  1. Butter the slices thinly first. A layer of fat slows the absorption and buys you longer under a runny yolk.
  2. Poach the eggs while the slices sit on a warm plate rather than in the steam of the pan.
  3. Lift the eggs out onto kitchen paper for a moment to take the water off, then onto the slices.
  4. Eat immediately with a knife and fork rather than picking it up.

What you'll end up with: The one build where a crispbread genuinely outperforms toast, because the pitted surface holds a broken yolk instead of letting it run off the edge.

Cheddar, Pickle and Apple

How to make Cheddar, Pickle and Apple with Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat.

5 min 2 people Easy
You'll need
  • 4 Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat slices
  • A wedge of mature cheddar
  • A spoonful of pickle
  • A crisp apple
Method
  1. Slice the cheddar rather than grating it, and lay it straight on the slice with no butter underneath.
  2. Spoon the pickle on at the last moment rather than in advance, because it is the wettest thing on the plate.
  3. Add a thin slice of apple on top for something sharp against the toasted seed.
  4. Grip it from the side without worrying: this base will take it.

What you'll end up with: A ploughman's on a slice, which works here because the crispbread has enough structure to be picked up fully loaded.

Tomato, Oil and Sea Salt

How to make Tomato, Oil and Sea Salt with Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat.

5 min 2 people Easy
You'll need
  • 2 ripe tomatoes
  • 4 Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat slices
  • Good olive oil
  • Basil
Method
  1. Slice the tomatoes and rest them on kitchen paper for a minute to take off the worst of the wetness.
  2. Drizzle a little oil onto the slices first, which slows absorption at the surface.
  3. Lay the tomato over, add a pinch of sea salt and tear basil on top.
  4. Eat soon, but without the panic a thin cracker would require.

What you'll end up with: A summer plate that the open structure makes possible: minutes of margin rather than the seconds a thin flatbread allows.

Toasted Seed Crumb

How to make Toasted Seed Crumb with Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat.

12 min 1 tray Easy
You'll need
  • 3 broken Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed and Oat slices
  • 30g melted butter
  • Salt and pepper
  • A gratin or roast that needs a topping
Method
  1. Crush the slices in a bag with a rolling pin into coarse crumbs, leaving some seed pieces whole.
  2. Stir through the melted butter and season lightly.
  3. Scatter over a vegetable gratin, a fish pie or roasted squash for the last twelve minutes.
  4. Watch the seeds, which have already been toasted once and will colour faster the second time.

What you'll end up with: A better savoury crumb than breadcrumbs, because the oats hold their texture and the seeds bring a roasted note breadcrumbs never have.

ComponentProportionWhat it brings

Pack: Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed & Oat Crackers, 200g; thick hard-baked crispbread slices with an open pitted structure, carrying pumpkin seed and oat, a distinct line from the light Ryvita crackerbreads and the thin flatbread Thins. Store cool, dry, dark and airtight once opened: the open interior is a great deal of hidden surface, and the inner wrapping stops the slices breaking without sealing them. Read the net weight, the slice count, the grain and ingredient list, the nutrition panel, the allergen advice and the best-before date off the current UK pack.

Characterising components shown. The separation of crispbread, crackerbread and Thins is our own editorial reading of three lines the brand sells separately. The sensory placements are our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description; we have held no tastings and hold no brand specification sheets.

Sourcing & blend. Ryvita Crispbread Pumpkin Seed & Oat Crackers, 200g is made by Ryvita, the name that made crispbread an ordinary part of British lunch. On our own shelf we list the Original and Dark Rye at 250g, a Multigrain and a Sesame, a Cracked Black Pepper, this Pumpkin Seed and Oat, a Fruit Crunch, the very light crackerbreads and the thin flatbread Thins. Our reading is that the thick crispbreads are the food, the crackerbreads are a platform and the Thins are a snack, and that the seeded slices sit at the more characterful end of the crispbread range. Product questions

Asked about this product

Density. A crispbread is a thick hard slab with an open interior; a crackerbread is pale, airy and snaps like a wafer. Ryvita sells both, and our reading is that a crispbread is a food and a crackerbread is a platform.
