Ryvita Crackerbread Original Crackers, 200g
Nobody eats one of these walking past the cupboard, and that tells you what it is: a plate rather than a snack. The whole slice is built to be assembled on and then carried horizontally, which is a different job from a cracker you take by the handful, and it explains who keeps buying it. These go to people with a routine. A quick lunch, a Sunday tea, something put together in two minutes out of whatever was already in the fridge. Nearly all the complaints come from handling rather than from the biscuit. Load it on a plate rather than in your hand, because the open structure runs right the way through the slice and it gives way the instant pressure arrives from one side. Slice hard cheese thin and lay it flat as well; a wedge will break the thing halfway to your mouth, and at that point it is your fault rather than the cracker's. It is made from wheat. That puts it out for anyone avoiding gluten, and no reading of the pack is going to change it.
Ryvita Crackerbread Original Crackers, in brief.
Ryvita Crackerbread Original is the thin, pale, airy square from one of the established names in British crispbread, a two hundred gram pack.
This is not the dark rye crispbread, which is the opposite product from the same brand. Crackerbread is a platform: quiet, barely salted and built thin, so the topping does all the talking. Spread it with soft butter and a gentle hand, because a cold knife will snap it, and top it late because anything wet goes through it faster than through a thicker cracker.
Ryvita Crackerbread Original is a 200g pack of thin, pale crackerbread from one of the established names in British crispbread.
It is a thin, airy, almost weightless square with an open structure all the way through, closer to a wafer than to a dense baked cracker, and it goes crisp rather than hard.

Curator’s notes
Read the full write-up
It is worth being clear that this is not Ryvita's rye crispbread. The crispbread is the thick, heavy, dark slab most people picture when they hear the brand name. Crackerbread is its opposite: pale, thin and fragile, a base for something rather than a thing you eat on its own. If you have bought one expecting the other you will not enjoy the first bite.
The Story Behind Ryvita
Ryvita is one of the established names in British crispbread, and Crackerbread is the light end of what it makes: a thin, pale, crisp square rather than a heavy grain slab. It has been a fixture of the lunchbox and the tea tray for a long time, and it has kept its place there because nothing else quite does its job. A conventional cracker is a substantial thing in its own right. This one is a platform, and it lets what you put on it be the whole flavour.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.
What You Are Actually Buying
- Weight: two hundred grams. Because the slices are so light, two hundred grams of Crackerbread is a great many more pieces than two hundred grams of a dense cracker.
- Contains gluten: it is a cereal cracker and is not suitable for a coeliac diet. The grain and the full ingredient list are on the current pack.
- Fragile: genuinely so. It snaps under a firm knife and it breaks in a bag. That is the trade for the lightness and it is not a fault.
- What it is not: not the dark rye crispbread, not a cheeseboard cracker for a big wedge of something heavy, and not a biscuit for dunking.
Ideal Serving Conditions
A sealed inner wrap in a dry cupboard holds it for months. An open pack folded over in a steamy kitchen will be soft in days, and a soft Crackerbread is no use to anyone because the lightness was the whole point. Squeeze the air out of the inner wrap, fold it right down, and keep the pack off the worktop nearest the kettle.
The Lunch and Tea Tray Serve
- Spread with a gentle hand: a cold hard butter will snap it. Soften the butter first, or use something soft, and spread from the middle outwards rather than pushing across.
- Two at a time: it is a light slice, so nobody stops at one. That is the pack behaving as designed, not you.
- Strong toppings win: the base is quiet, so a mature cheese, a yeast spread, a well-seasoned pate or anything sharp reads clearly on it. Delicate toppings get lost, because there is nothing underneath to frame them.
- Top it late: anything wet goes through this faster than through a thicker cracker. Five minutes is about the limit before it starts to give.
The Cheese and Savoury Serve
- Thin cheese, not a wedge: a heavy piece will break the slice on the way to your mouth. Slice hard cheese thinly and lay it flat.
- Good with soft cheese: spread rather than piled, and eaten straight away while the base is still crisp.
- Soup, on the side: beside a bowl rather than in it. It has no structure to survive being dipped.
- Break it deliberately: snapped into shards over a salad or a soup it behaves like a crouton, and it is a good use for the broken ones at the bottom of the pack.
Getting It Right with a Hot Drink
- Pairing: a plain black tea with milk, a strong breakfast blend, or black coffee. The cracker adds nothing sweet, so the drink is free to be whatever it likes.
- Dunking: no. It is thin, dry and unsweetened and it disintegrates in seconds. Keep it on the plate.
- Storage: dry, sealed and away from steam, with the air pressed out of the inner wrap.
- Best with: a light lunch, a lunchbox, a tea tray, or the plate you build at nine in the evening when you are not hungry enough to cook.

The taste profile
How does it compare
Ryvita Crackerbread Original Crackers, 200g is a platform rather than a snack, so every build below is really a build for the topping. Five of them: the buttered slice done properly, the nine o'clock cheese plate, a fast lunch tray, crackerbread croutons for the broken ones, and a tray of canapes that stay crisp.
Made with this tea
The Buttered Slice, Done Properly
How to make The Buttered Slice, Done Properly with Ryvita Crackerbread Original.
- 2 slices Ryvita Crackerbread Original
- Butter, properly softened
- A round-bladed knife
- A mug of plain black tea
- Soften the butter first. Cold butter on a thin open cracker snaps it, every time, and that is the whole reason people think these are too fragile.
- Lay the slice flat on a plate rather than holding it in your hand.
- Spread from the middle outwards in short strokes, never pushing across the slice.
- Eat straight away with a mug of plain black tea beside it, not underneath it.
What you'll end up with: Two intact slices instead of four broken halves. Softened butter and a middle-out stroke is the entire technique.
The Nine O'Clock Cheese Plate
How to make The Nine O'Clock Cheese Plate with Ryvita Crackerbread Original.
- 4 slices Ryvita Crackerbread Original
- A wedge of mature hard cheese
- A spoonful of pickle or chutney
- Half an apple, sliced thin
- Slice the cheese thin and lay it flat. A thick wedge will break the slice on the way to your mouth, which is the one thing this cracker cannot do.
- Choose a cheese with a strong voice. The base is quiet by design, so a mild cheese simply disappears on it.
- Add the pickle at the plate, never in the kitchen, because anything wet goes through a thin slice in about five minutes.
- Finish with thin apple for something cold and sharp against the cheese.
What you'll end up with: The plate you build when you are not hungry enough to cook, and better than it sounds because the cracker gets out of the way.
The Fast Lunch Tray
How to make The Fast Lunch Tray with Ryvita Crackerbread Original.
- 4 slices Ryvita Crackerbread Original
- Soft cheese or a well-seasoned pate
- Tomato and cucumber
- Cress, chives or rocket
- A squeeze of lemon and black pepper
- Keep the slices in the wrap until everything else is ready. This is a five-minute window, not a packed lunch you make at eight in the morning.
- Pat the tomato and cucumber dry on kitchen paper, which buys you several extra minutes of crispness.
- Spread the soft cheese thinly, then build in this order: cheese, dry vegetables, herbs.
- Finish with lemon and pepper at the table and eat it straight away.
What you'll end up with: A lunch that takes eight minutes and stays crisp, provided you dry the vegetables and build it late.
Crackerbread Croutons from the Broken Ones
How to make Crackerbread Croutons from the Broken Ones with Ryvita Crackerbread Original.
- The broken pieces from the bottom of the pack
- A little olive oil
- Dried oregano or thyme
- A hot oven at 180°C
- Snap the broken slices into rough shards. Uneven is better than neat.
- Toss them in the smallest amount of oil that coats them and scatter over the herbs.
- Bake at 180°C for 4 to 6 minutes, watching closely, because a thin cracker colours in seconds once it starts.
- Scatter over soup or a salad at the table, not before, or they go soft in the bowl.
What you'll end up with: A proper use for the layer of pieces every pack ends with, and a lighter crouton than bread gives.
Canapes That Stay Crisp
How to make Canapes That Stay Crisp with Ryvita Crackerbread Original.
- 6 slices Ryvita Crackerbread Original
- 150g soft cheese, at room temperature
- Smoked fish or thin ham
- Lemon zest and black pepper
- Dill or chives
- Snap each slice into four along its natural lines rather than cutting it, which only shatters it.
- Prepare the topping fully and keep it in the bowl. Everything can be ready an hour ahead except the assembly.
- Assemble ten minutes before they go out, in one pass: cheese, fish or ham, zest, herbs.
- Serve on a cold plate and accept that this tray does not survive being made early. That is the trade for the lightness.
What you'll end up with: Twenty-four light canapes for the price of six slices, on the one condition that you build them at the last minute.
