Nairn's Savoury Biscuit Selection, 235g
This is a box bought for a date in the diary rather than for the cupboard. It gets opened for a board or a soup supper, and whatever survives the evening has no obvious second occasion, because nobody reaches for a seasoned oat biscuit at four in the afternoon with a cup of tea. Buy it close to the day you need it.
Nairn's Savoury Biscuit Selection, in brief.
Nairn's Savoury Biscuit Selection is a cheeseboard box rather than a tea box, 235g from a long-established Scottish oat baker, picked into the Teas.co.uk curator selection as the savoury assortment with no sweet item in it to get in a cheese's way.
Savoury biscuits stale faster than sweet ones, having little sugar to hold moisture and no coating to seal them, so decant into a tin on day one. If they do go soft, five minutes in a low oven brings the snap back. Nairn's makes both gluten-free and ordinary lines and this pack's name carries no gluten-free claim, so read the box.
What is actually in the box is printed on the pack. What is worth explaining is why a savoury assortment behaves differently from a sweet one, because almost nobody thinks about it until the cheeseboard is already out.
Curator notes: the tasting profile is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description. We run same-day UK dispatch on every order placed before 2pm Monday to Friday. Common questions are answered in the detailed Q and A tab below.

The Story Behind Nairn's
Nairn's is a long-established Scottish oat baker and oats are the whole business rather than one line within it. The house makes both gluten-free lines and ordinary ones, which matters here and we come back to it below.
The current pack carries all of it.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.
What You Are Actually Buying
- Weight: two hundred and thirty-five grams.
- Savoury throughout: no sweet item anywhere, which is the single reason to choose a savoury selection over a general biscuit assortment for a cheeseboard.
- What it is not: not individually wrapped and not a tin. A savoury biscuit goes soft faster than a sweet one, so the storage advice below is the important part of this page.
Ideal Serving Conditions
Savoury biscuits stale faster than sweet ones and they stale in a way people misread. There is little sugar in them to hold moisture and no coating to seal the surface, so they take water out of the kitchen air quickly, and the first thing to go is the snap that lets them carry a topping.
The Cheeseboard
- Match the biscuit to the cheese: plainer, drier ones under a strong blue or a mature cheddar; anything seeded or seasoned with a milder cheese that will not be shouted over.
- Put them out last: ten minutes on a board in a warm room is enough to take the edge off the crispness. Bring the cheese to temperature, not the biscuits.
- Top at the table: a savoury biscuit starts softening the moment something moist sits on it, so build each one as you eat it rather than in advance.
- Serve dry: these are not dunking biscuits and nothing about them wants a hot drink underneath.
The Storage Rules
- Airtight the day you open it: into a tin, not the sleeve. This matters more for savoury biscuits than for sweet ones.
- Away from the kettle: the air above a kettle is the most humid in the house and it is where most biscuits go soft.
- Refresh them if they do go soft: five minutes in a low oven, about 150C, and a few minutes cooling on a rack brings the snap back. That works on savoury biscuits and not on coated sweet ones.
Getting It Right with a Hot Drink
- Pairing: these are for a board rather than a mug, but if you are drinking something alongside, a strong black tea or a plain black coffee stays out of the way.
- Avoid: sweet and fruit teas. They fight a savoury biscuit and they fight cheese harder still.
- Dunking: no. There is nothing in a savoury biscuit to survive it and the structure gives way immediately.
- Best with: a cheeseboard, a soup, pate, or a lunch where bread would be too much.

The taste profile
How does it compare
This is a savoury biscuit selection built to carry cheese, so the builds below are about the board, keeping the snap and using the box for more than a cheeseboard. The cards are the cheeseboard itself, the tin, the oven refresh, a soup side, a quick canape plate and a savoury crumb for a gratin.
Made with this tea
The Cheeseboard
How to match the biscuits in the box to the cheeses on the board.
- Nairn's Savoury Biscuit Selection
- A strong blue, a mature cheddar and something mild
- Grapes or a chutney
- Bring the cheese to room temperature an hour before serving. The biscuits stay in the tin.
- Put the plainest biscuits under the strongest cheeses, where their job is to carry rather than contribute.
- Keep anything seeded or seasoned for the mild cheese that will not be shouted over.
- Add the biscuits to the board last, immediately before it goes on the table.
What you'll end up with: A board where every biscuit is under the cheese it suits, still crisp.
The Tin, On Day One
How to keep a savoury biscuit crisp for longer than a week.
- Nairn's Savoury Biscuit Selection
- An airtight tin
- Decant the whole pack on the day you open it. The opened sleeve is not airtight.
- Store in a cool dry cupboard, and not on the shelf beside the kettle.
- The air above a kettle is the most humid in the house, and a savoury biscuit has no sugar to hold moisture and no coating to seal it.
What you'll end up with: Biscuits that still snap when the box is half empty.
The Oven Refresh
How to bring soft biscuits back instead of throwing them out.
- Softened savoury biscuits
- An oven at 150C
- A cooling rack
- Lay them in a single layer on a baking tray.
- Bake five minutes at about 150C to drive the absorbed moisture out.
- Cool on a rack, not in the tin. Trapped steam goes straight back in.
- This works because there is no coating to melt, which is exactly why it ruins a chocolate biscuit.
What you'll end up with: The snap back, almost completely, in ten minutes.
Alongside a Bowl of Soup
How to use them where bread would be too much.
- 4 to 6 savoury biscuits
- A bowl of soup
- Salted butter
- Butter the plainer biscuits generously and serve them beside the bowl.
- Do not crumble them in. They soften instantly and turn the soup to paste.
- A dry close crumb is what holds butter without going greasy, which is the same structure that carries cheese.
What you'll end up with: A lighter lunch than bread and butter, with more texture.
The Ten-Minute Canape Plate
How to build toppings that do not go soggy.
- 12 savoury biscuits
- Cream cheese or a soft goat's cheese
- Smoked salmon, or roasted peppers
- Dill or chives, and black pepper
- Spread a layer of cheese first. Fat is a barrier and it slows the moisture reaching the biscuit.
- Add the topping and the herbs on top of that layer, never directly onto the biscuit.
- Build them no more than ten minutes before serving.
- An hour ahead is always a disappointment, whatever the recipe says.
What you'll end up with: A dozen canapes still crisp when they reach the table.
Savoury Crumb for a Gratin
How to use the broken ones at the bottom of the tin.
- 80g broken savoury biscuits
- 50g grated mature cheddar
- 30g melted butter
- Thyme and black pepper
- Crush the biscuits to a coarse crumb rather than a powder.
- Mix with the cheese, melted butter, thyme and pepper.
- Scatter over a vegetable gratin or a fish pie and bake at 190C fan for fifteen minutes.
- An oat-led crumb browns faster than breadcrumbs, so check it at ten minutes.
What you'll end up with: A nutty, well-browned topping and an empty tin.

Sourcing & blend. Nairn's Savoury Biscuit Selection, 235g is made by Nairn's, a long-established Scottish oat baker for whom oats are the whole business rather than one line within it.
What's in Nairn's Savoury Biscuit Selection, 235g, and what isn't:
- In: an assortment of savoury biscuits in a 235g pack, the contents printed on the box.
- No sweet item: that is the design of a savoury selection and the reason to choose one for a cheeseboard over a general biscuit assortment.
- No health claim: oats attract a great deal of loose talk. We claim no benefit of any kind and quote no fibre, sugar, fat or calorie figure.
- Allergen note: several recipes sit in one box, so a precautionary statement may apply to some items and not others. Read the latest pack rather than relying on this page.
