LCurator note · Nairn's
The name says seeded and stops there, so if it is sesame you avoid, the pack is the only place that answers you, and the gluten free wording is the brand's own on that same pack. Beyond that the seeds set the terms. They sit proud of the sheet, take more direct heat and bring their own oil, so the cracker reads richer and lasts longer in the mouth than the plain one in the line. Give it something that can shout back, hummus or a strong blue. Scoop rather than spread; a knife finds every hard lump in a thin sheet.

About this product

Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Wholegrain Crackers, in brief.

Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Wholegrain Crackers is the one in the Scottish baker's gluten-free line with an opinion of its own, 137g, picked into the Teas.co.uk curator selection as the seeded cracker that eats well on its own.

Seeds do three jobs here: they add crunch, they add fat, which is what makes a seeded cracker taste richer than a plain one, and they interrupt a thin sheet that has no gluten holding it together, which is why this breaks even more readily than the plain Original. It eats well alone and with hummus, and it buries anything delicate.

Seeds are doing three separate jobs in a bake like this and they are worth separating out. They add texture, which is the obvious one. They add fat, which is less obvious and matters more, because seed oils are what make a seeded cracker taste richer than a plain one and also what make it go dull sooner. And they interrupt the sheet: every seed is a hard lump in a thin dough that has no gluten holding it together, which is why a seeded gluten-free cracker breaks even more readily than a plain one.

Curator notes: the tasting profile is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description. We run same-day UK dispatch on every order placed before 2pm Monday to Friday. The seed allergen question, storage and what to put on top are also in the detailed Q and A tab below.

The Story Behind Nairn's

Nairn's is a Scottish baker whose business is built on grain, which is why the gluten-free range here is a proper part of the catalogue rather than a bolt-on. This cracker sits in a line of three that we list: the plain Original in a 160g pack, this Super Seeded at 137g, and a Cracked Black Pepper also at 137g. Our reading of that line is that the Original is a base, the Pepper is a snack, and this one does both jobs passably and neither perfectly. That is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description, not a specification handed to us.

The name tells us it is seeded, wholegrain and gluten free. The gluten-free statement is the brand's own.

Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.

What You Are Actually Buying

  • Weight: one hundred and thirty-seven grams, a smaller pack than the plain Original.
  • What it is not: not a neutral base. Buying this expecting the Original's invisibility under a topping is the one way to be disappointed by it.

Ideal Serving Conditions

A seeded cracker has one extra failure mode on top of the usual one, and it is the seeds. They carry oil, and oil dulls with warmth, light and time in a way that dry grain does not.

The Plate and the Lunchbox

  • Handle them flat: every seed is a hard lump in a crumb with no gluten network around it, so this one breaks more readily than the plain Original. Lift from underneath.
  • Give them something soft: hummus, cream cheese, soft goat's cheese. The crunch wants something yielding against it rather than another hard texture.
  • Do not bury a delicate topping: a subtle pate or a mild soft cheese loses to the seeds. Keep those for the plain cracker and put something assertive on this one.

The Storage Rules

  • Airtight, the same day: reseal or decant to a tin the day you open it. A cracker is crisp because the water was baked out of it, and open kitchen air puts it back.
  • Cool and dark, and mean it: this matters more here than on the plain one. Seed oils dull in warmth and light, and a seeded cracker past its best tastes flat and faintly papery rather than merely soft.
  • Buy the size you will eat: at 137g this is the small pack, which is the right choice for a household that eats seeded crackers occasionally rather than daily.

Getting It Right with a Hot Drink

  • Pairing: a strong black tea. The seeds bring fat, and a tannic drink cuts fat in a way that water does not.
  • Also good: black coffee, which meets the toasted seed note head on, and a rooibos in the evening when caffeine is not wanted.
  • Dunking: no. With no gluten network a wet cracker does not soften, it falls apart, and the seeds go to the bottom of the mug first.
  • Best with: hummus, a lunchbox, a soup lunch and anything with enough character to stand up to the seeds.

Toasted Richness●●●●○ 4/5
Seed oils browned in the bake give a nuttiness a plain wholegrain cracker does not have.
Salt●●●○○ 3/5
Underneath rather than on top, doing the same job as in the Original.

Lower than the plain one, and deliberately. It eats well alone and with hummus; it buries a delicate pate.

How does it compare

vs Nairn's Gluten Free Original Wholegrain Crackers, 160gThe plain one in the same line, in a bigger pack. Quieter in the mouth. If the cracker is going under cheese or pate, buy that one; if it is going in a lunchbox on its own, buy this.
vs Nairn's Super Seeded Organic Oatcakes, 200gThe seeded oatcake in the wider range, in a bigger pack. It carries no gluten-free statement in its product name, so it is not an alternative for a gluten-free household; it is the seeded option for everyone else.

Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Wholegrain Crackers, 137g brings its own crunch, so it works as a snack rather than only as a base. Five builds below cover hummus, a lunchbox, a hot smoked salmon plate, a seeded crumb and the cheeseboard place where it actually belongs.

Hummus and Seeded Crackers

How to make Hummus and Seeded Crackers with Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Wholegrain Crackers.

5 min 2 people Easy
You'll need
  • 10 Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Crackers
  • A tub of hummus
  • Olive oil
  • Smoked paprika or chilli flakes
  • Half a lemon
Method
  1. Turn the hummus into a shallow bowl and make a well in the middle with the back of a spoon.
  2. Pour olive oil into the well, squeeze in the lemon and dust the top with paprika or chilli.
  3. Serve the crackers alongside rather than standing in the bowl, which softens them from the bottom up.
  4. Scoop rather than spread. A seeded gluten-free cracker will snap under a loaded knife.

What you'll end up with: The pairing this cracker was made for: something soft and assertive against the crunch, with nothing subtle to bury.

The Lunchbox That Stays Crisp

How to make The Lunchbox That Stays Crisp with Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Wholegrain Crackers.

5 min 1 lunchbox Easy
You'll need
  • 6 Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Crackers
  • A wedge of hard cheese
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • A few cornichons
Method
  1. Pack the crackers in their own sealed compartment or a small tin. Loose in a lunchbox they break, and next to anything wet they go soft by eleven o'clock.
  2. Keep the cheese in a separate piece rather than sliced onto the crackers.
  3. Put the tomatoes somewhere they cannot leak.
  4. Assemble at the table, which takes ten seconds and is the whole difference.

What you'll end up with: A gluten-free packed lunch that is still crisp at lunchtime, which is the only thing a cracker in a lunchbox has to get right.

Hot Smoked Salmon and Creme Fraiche

How to make Hot Smoked Salmon and Creme Fraiche with Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Wholegrain Crackers.

8 min 2 people Easy
You'll need
  • 8 Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Crackers
  • A fillet of hot smoked salmon
  • 3 tablespoons creme fraiche
  • Half a lemon
  • Fresh dill
Method
  1. Loosen the creme fraiche with lemon juice and a grind of pepper so it spreads without tearing a fragile cracker.
  2. Flake the salmon into large pieces rather than shredding it. Hot smoked salmon has enough flavour to meet the seeds.
  3. Build at the table and eat within a few minutes.
  4. Finish with dill and a second squeeze of lemon.

What you'll end up with: One of the few fish plates strong enough that the seeds do not take it over, which is exactly why hot smoked works here and cold smoked does not.

Seeded Crumb for a Gratin

How to make Seeded Crumb for a Gratin with Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Wholegrain Crackers.

15 min 1 jar Easy
You'll need
  • The end of a pack of Super Seeded Crackers
  • 50g melted butter or olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons grated hard cheese
Method
  1. Crush the crackers in a bag with a rolling pin. A processor turns a seeded crumb to paste because of the oil in the seeds.
  2. Stir through the melted butter, the cheese and a good grind of pepper.
  3. Scatter over a gratin, a fish pie or roast vegetables and bake at 200°C for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Watch it near the end. Seeds brown faster than crumb and they catch.

What you'll end up with: A gluten-free crumb topping with more texture than a plain one gives, made from the broken ends at the bottom of the pack.

The Cheeseboard Place It Actually Belongs

How to make The Cheeseboard Place It Actually Belongs with Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Wholegrain Crackers.

10 min 4 people Easy
You'll need
  • 8 Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Crackers
  • 8 plain gluten-free crackers
  • A strong blue cheese
  • A mild soft cheese
  • Honey
Method
  1. Put two kinds of cracker on the board, seeded and plain. One cracker cannot do both jobs.
  2. Send the seeded ones towards the blue, which is loud enough to stand up to them.
  3. Keep the plain ones for the mild soft cheese, which the seeds would bury.
  4. Drizzle honey over the blue and leave the rest alone.

What you'll end up with: A board where each cracker is doing the job it is good at, instead of one cracker losing half the cheese on it.

ComponentProportionWhat it brings

Pack: Nairn's Gluten Free Super Seeded Wholegrain Crackers, 137g; seeded savoury wholegrain crackers, the textured one in the gluten-free line. Store cool, dry, dark and airtight, and reseal the pack or decant to a tin the day you open it: a cracker is crisp only while it stays dry, and the seed oils here dull in warmth and light faster than plain grain does. Our reading is that the Original is a base, the Pepper is a snack and this one does both jobs passably and neither perfectly.
