LCurator note · Bakery Delights
Anyone who has tried a rye crispbread and quietly given up should start here instead. This is the same idea baked lighter and thinner, dry and crisp without the heaviness or the bitter edge, and a small pack means finding out is a small commitment. Plain is the point. Beside a bowl of soup, or with a mild cheese and nothing else going on, it works well enough that the 125g goes quicker than planned. The brand name tells you nothing about what is in it, so the ingredient and allergen panel on the pack is the only place to look.

About this product

Bakery Delights Crispbakes, in brief.

Bakery Delights Crispbakes are a 125g pack of light, dry-baked savoury slices.

A crispbake sits between a cracker and a crispbread: dry-baked and thin, with so little seasoning that the topping has to bring it.

Bakery Delights Crispbakes is a 125g pack of light, dry-baked savoury slices, and we are going to be unusually plain about how much we know: the pack name, the weight and the price. That is it. What follows is about the format and about how to use it, because that is what we can actually stand behind. The published ingredient list also includes rye.

The format is worth understanding, because it sits between the two savoury styles either side of it in our range. A cracker is baked short and relatively rich, so it flakes and carries seasoning. A crispbread is baked long and very dry, so it is rigid and austere and holds heavy weight. A crispbake is the lighter version of that second idea: dry-baked and thin, less rigid than a crispbread slab and far less rich than a cracker. The result is a base that disappears under a topping more completely than either.

The Story Behind Bakery Delights

What we can say is where the product sits: the light dry-baked category rather than the cracker category. A small pack is aimed at a single household or a desk drawer rather than a family cupboard.

The ingredient list, the grain used, the allergen advice, any certification marks and the country of origin must all be read off the current UK pack rather than taken from this page.

Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.

What You Are Actually Buying

  • A base, not a snack: there is very little seasoning here, so it is built to carry something rather than to be eaten from the pack.

Getting It Right in the Cup

  • Clip the pack: a thin dry bake takes moisture out of the air quickly, and a small pack has more air in it per slice once it is half empty.
  • Bendy, not stale: like any dry bake, softness here is absorbed moisture rather than lost quality. Five minutes in a 150C oven and a cool on a rack will bring the snap back.
  • Do not dunk: too thin and too dry. It takes up liquid instantly and there is no filling holding it together.
  • Cupboard, not fridge: no fat to stiffen and no coating to bloom, and a fridge only adds the humidity you are trying to keep out.
  • Best with: cottage cheese and black pepper, or tomato with oil and salt, and a normally brewed mug of tea.

The taste profile

Lightness●●●●● 5/5
Thin and dry-baked, so it is barely there in the hand or the bite. The design intention.
Crisp Snap●●●●○ 4/5
Less surface fat than a cracker, so a sharper break and a drier crumb.
Cereal Note●●○○○ 2/5
A dry baked-grain savour with nothing much layered over it. Quiet by design.
Salt And Fat●○○○○ 1/5
Minimal. If you want seasoning you add it, and the point is that there is room to.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs Ryvita Crispbread Sesame Crackers, 250gMore rigid and carries a wet topping longer; a crispbake is lighter and comes in a pack you will finish.

The pairing is really between the drink and the topping, which means the cup can be chosen on its own merits for once rather than as a corrective.

The Tea Break

01
Milk if the topping is richCheese or tuna alongside wants the fat in the cup; a plain tomato topping does not need it.
02
Brew normallyThere is no salt to suppress bitterness, so the usual savoury trick of over-brewing does not apply and will just make the cup harsh.
03
No sugarThe one rule that holds across every savoury pack in this range, whatever is on top.

The Lunch Serve

01
Season the topping, not the baseThis bake brings very little salt, so whatever goes on top has to bring it. Cottage cheese with pepper, tuna with lemon, tomato with oil and salt.
02
Assemble as you eatA thin dry-baked slice under a wet topping softens faster than a crispbread slab would. Build one at a time.
03
Handle gentlyLighter than a crispbread means more fragile than a crispbread. These break in a bag unless they go in a rigid tub.
04
Three or four makes a lunchWith cottage cheese or tuna and something fresh alongside. The pack is small, so a lunch is a real proportion of it.

Made with this tea

Cottage Cheese And Black Pepper

How to make Cottage Cheese And Black Pepper with Bakery Delights Crispbakes.

4 min 1 lunch Easy
You'll need
  • 3 or 4 Bakery Delights Crispbakes
  • Cottage cheese
  • Black pepper
  • Chopped chives, optional
  • 1 mug tea, brewed normally
Method
  1. Spoon the cottage cheese on one slice at a time rather than making up a plate. A thin dry bake under a wet topping softens quickly.
  2. Grind plenty of pepper over. The base brings very little seasoning, so the topping has to bring it all.
  3. Scatter chives if you have them; they lift a plain topping without adding salt.
  4. Brew the tea normally rather than long. There is no salt here to suppress bitterness, so a long brew just tastes harsh.

What you'll end up with: The build the format is best at, because the base gets out of the way more completely than a cracker would.

Tomato, Oil And Salt

How to make Tomato, Oil And Salt with Bakery Delights Crispbakes.

5 min 1 serving Easy
You'll need
  • 3 Bakery Delights Crispbakes
  • 1 ripe tomato
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Basil, optional
Method
  1. Slice the tomato thinly and blot it on kitchen paper. Water is what turns a thin slice soft.
  2. Salt the tomato rather than the base. This is one of the few builds in the range where you add salt, because the crispbake brings almost none.
  3. Dress with oil and pepper and tear basil over if you have it.
  4. Assemble and eat immediately, one slice at a time.

What you'll end up with: Four ingredients and about five minutes, and the base is barely noticeable, which here is the compliment.

Tuna And Lemon Plate

How to make Tuna And Lemon Plate with Bakery Delights Crispbakes.

8 min 1 lunch Easy
You'll need
  • 4 Bakery Delights Crispbakes
  • 1 small tin of tuna, drained
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • A spoon of mayonnaise or yoghurt
  • Cucumber, sliced
Method
  1. Drain the tuna thoroughly. Any liquid left in it goes straight into the base.
  2. Mix with lemon juice, pepper and a spoon of mayonnaise or yoghurt to hold it together.
  3. Top one slice at a time and eat as you go; this mixture is wetter than cottage cheese and moves faster.
  4. Serve cucumber alongside for the crunch the base does not last long enough to provide.

What you'll end up with: A desk lunch that takes eight minutes and eats better than the sandwich it replaces.

Soup, Dry Alongside

How to make Soup, Dry Alongside with Bakery Delights Crispbakes.

5 min 1 bowl Easy
You'll need
  • 3 Bakery Delights Crispbakes
  • 1 bowl of soup
  • A little butter
  • Black pepper
Method
  1. Butter them lightly instead, which gives the dry bake something to work with.
  2. Alternate a bite and a spoonful so the snap survives to the end of the bowl.
  3. Season the soup rather than the slices.

What you'll end up with: An easy way to make a bowl of soup into a lunch, provided you keep the two apart.

The Oven Rescue

How to make The Oven Rescue with Bakery Delights Crispbakes.

7 min 1 pack Easy
You'll need
  • Any bendy Bakery Delights Crispbakes
  • A baking tray
  • A low oven
  • A clip for the pack afterwards
Method
  1. Lay the bendy slices out in a single layer on a dry tray.
  2. Bake at 150C for about five minutes. These are thinner than a crispbread, so watch them rather than trusting the clock.
  3. Cool on a rack; they crisp as they cool rather than in the oven.
  4. Clip the pack afterwards, which matters more with a small pack because there is more air in it once it is half empty.

What you'll end up with: Nothing has spoiled, something has been absorbed, and five minutes takes it straight back out.

IngredientProportionWhat it brings
Light dry-baked slicethe formatThin and baked dry rather than short and rich. That is what makes it snap cleanly, stay out of the way of a topping and take up moisture from the air quickly once opened.
SeasoningminimalIt is a design decision rather than a shortfall: whatever goes on top brings the flavour.
Grain usedprinted on the packPrinted on the ingredient panel of the current UK pack. Crispbakes is a format name and tells you nothing about the cereal, so anybody avoiding a specific grain must read the label.
Full ingredient declarationprinted on the packThe ingredient panel, the nutrition table, the piece count and the allergen statement are printed on the current UK pack.

Pack: Best before the date printed on the pack, and best clipped shut, because a small pack has a lot of air in it once it is half empty.

What we can place is the product: the light dry-baked category rather than the cracker category, in a small pack sized for a single household or a desk drawer rather than a family cupboard. The pack you receive is the current UK retail pack rather than an import made to a different recipe.

What is in Bakery Delights Crispbakes, 125g, and what is not:

  • In: light dry-baked savoury slices, 125g to the pack. That is the extent of what the pack name tells us and the extent of what we will assert.
