How to Make a Proper Builder's Brew
How to brew a proper builders strength everyday mug with whole leaf Teapigs Everyday Brew: water, timing and milk done right.

This is the cup that matters most: a proper builder's strength mug, done right. Teapigs Everyday Brew is a whole leaf blend in a biodegradable temple, so it has more to give than a dusty supermarket bag, and a few small things, the water, the timing and where the milk goes, make the difference between a flat cup and a full one.

It is the everyday foundation: bright, brisk and malty. One mug, a couple of minutes.
You'll need
- 1 Teapigs Everyday Brew tea temple
- 250ml freshly drawn water, brought to a full rolling boil
- A splash of cold milk, to taste
- Sugar or honey, optional
Method
- Fill the kettle with fresh cold water and bring it to a full boil. Black tea needs the full 100C; reboiled or under boiled water gives a flat cup.
- Put the tea temple in the mug and pour the boiling water straight onto it so it agitates the leaves.
- Steep for 3 minutes for a standard cup, up to 4 for builder's strength. Do not go past 4, or the tannin turns it bitter.
- Lift the bag out, press it gently against the side once, no more, then discard it.
- Add the milk after the bag is out, so the brew stays hot enough to extract properly; cold milk added too early stalls the steep.
- Sweeten if you like, stir, and drink it while it is properly hot.
