What "Nespresso compatible" means here
Nespresso runs two systems that share a brand name and nothing else. The Original system takes the small conical capsule and extracts it under pressure; the Vertuo system takes a larger domed capsule with a barcode around the rim and spins it. These capsules are cut to the Original shape, so they fit Original machines and they do not fit a Vertuo. They are also not Lavazza A Modo Mio capsules, which are Lavazza's own separate system for Lavazza's own machines.
The intensity figure on the carton is Lavazza's own scale and compares Lavazza with Lavazza. It is not a rating against another roaster's number, so read it off the pack you have.

How Lavazza Qualità Oro capsules compare
- Against Lavazza Qualità Rossa capsules: Rossa is the everyday Italian cup, with more bite and more weight; Oro is the aromatic one, softer and sweeter. Rossa is what you put out for a house that takes sugar; Oro is what you make for someone who drinks espresso black and notices.
- Against Lavazza Maestro Intenso: Intenso is a dark roast built for density and for surviving milk. If Oro has ever struck you as too polite, Intenso is the answer; if Intenso strikes you as harsh, this is.
Getting the best out of it
The dose and the grind are fixed, so the cup, the water and the timing are what is left to you. An aromatic blend rewards attention to all three more than a dark roast does, because there is less bitterness to mask a mistake.
The short serve
Button: The espresso button, roughly 25 to 30ml. This capsule is dosed short, and a long pour trades its sweetness for the dry end of the extraction.
Warm the cup: Hot water in, tipped out. A small volume of liquid in a cold cup loses temperature and aroma in seconds, and aroma is what you are paying for here.
Smell it first: Not an affectation. The aromatic lift is the best part of this blend and it is at its peak in the first thirty seconds.
No sugar to start: Try it black once. Oro is sweeter than most espresso blends and sugar covers exactly the part that makes it worth the money.
If you want it longer or with milk
Americano: Hot water in the mug first, then pull the espresso into it. Keeps the aroma and avoids the harsh tail you get by running the capsule long.
Milk: It works, but keep the milk small, around 100ml. This is not a dark roast and a full mug of milk will swamp it.
Two capsules for a big cup: Rather than one long pour. The machine will keep pouring after the coffee has stopped giving.
Iced: Pull the shot into a shaker, sweeten while hot if you want it sweet, then shake hard with ice and strain.

A Small Flat White
Milk in proportion, so the coffee is still the thing you can taste.

- A 150 to 180ml cup
- Steam or froth 100ml of milk to about 60 degrees, no hotter.
