## Description

Tunnock's Milk Chocolate Teacakes: Fridge, Cupboard and Serving, in summary: Ten foil-wrapped teacakes, each sealed on its own, so an open box keeps. The cupboard gives a soft dome, the fridge a firmer one with a snapping shell. Eat from a plate with strong black tea.
Last reviewed by the teas.co.uk team in September 2026.
Temperature changes a Tunnock's teacake more than anything else you can do to it, which makes the fridge-or-cupboard question worth settling properly. The box of ten gives you enough to try both.
A household box of ten
This is the bigger of the two Tunnock's teacake packs we stock: ten, each twisted into its own red and silver foil, against six in the smaller box. Because every teacake is sealed separately, opening the box does not start a clock the way opening a sleeve of biscuits does, so ten can be worked through at a family's pace without any going stale.
Inside each foil is the design Boyd Tunnock, the founder's grandson, developed for the family bakery in Uddingston, where the teacake joined the range in 1956: a small, firm biscuit disc, a dome of whipped mallow with a faint vanilla sweetness, and a thin shell of milk chocolate holding it all together. The dome is most of the volume and very little of the weight.
Fridge or cupboard
Kept at room temperature, the dome stays pillowy and the chocolate yields a little as you bite. Chilled, the mallow sets firmer and heavier and the shell snaps with an audible crack. They are close to being two different treats, and the fairest test is to put one in the fridge for an hour, leave another in the box, and eat them side by side.
In a warm kitchen the fridge stops being optional. A teacake that has sat near a radiator or in the sun loses its dome and its shine, and a dull, pale shell is the sign it has been too warm at some point. The foil guards the shape against knocks rather than against heat, so store the box somewhere cool from the day it arrives.
How to eat one, and what to drink
There is no tidy way to eat a teacake. First the shell cracks, then the dome collapses in one go, and the biscuit comes last, so once you have started there is no stopping halfway. Serve them on a plate, one each, rather than passing a bowl, and keep them well away from the mug: with a closed shell and an airy centre there is nothing for tea to soak into, only a top to melt.
The drink should be strong enough to meet the sweetness. A robust black tea with a little milk suits it best, and a plain everyday blend is a better match than anything perfumed. Black coffee works particularly well with a teacake straight from the fridge, where the firmer mallow and colder chocolate hold their own against the bitterness.

FAQ
How many teacakes are in the box? Ten, each in its own foil wrapper. We also stock a six-pack for smaller households.
Should Tunnock's teacakes go in the fridge? Either works. The cupboard keeps the mallow soft; the fridge firms it and makes the shell crack, and in a warm kitchen the fridge is the safer home.
Why is each teacake wrapped in foil? A dome is a fragile shape, so the foil protects it, and it keeps every teacake sealed until the moment you eat it.
Can you dunk a teacake in tea? No. The shell is closed and the inside is mostly air, so hot tea simply melts the top off.
What tea goes with a Tunnock's teacake? A strong black tea with a little milk, or a plain everyday blend. Black coffee suits a chilled one.
Curator's note: Hand them round one at a time on a plate, with a strong pot of tea. In a hot week, the fridge is the only sensible home for the box. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
