"content_text": "Tassimo L'OR Latte Macchiato: Why the Espresso Base Matters, in summary: Paired discs, milk first and espresso second, make seven layered milk coffees. The L'OR base is the selling point: in a drink that is mostly milk, a weak coffee vanishes and this darker, stronger one does not.\nLast reviewed by the teas.co.uk team in September 2026.\nThe trouble with most milk pods is that the coffee disappears. A latte macchiato is mostly milk, so the base has to be strong enough to push through it, and that is the case for the L'OR box: its espresso sits at the darker, stronger end of the Tassimo range.\nMilk that gets marked by coffee \nIn this drink it is the milk that gets marked by the coffee, rather than the coffee being topped up with milk. Milk is poured before anything else and the espresso follows through it, which is what gives a tall glass its banded look, with the machine's foam on top. Swap the order round and the result is simply a latte.\nEach drink uses one milk disc and one coffee disc, and the box builds seven. The machine reads the barcode on each disc and brews the two differently without you touching a setting. Your part is the glass: tall, clear and warmed with hot water first, so the bands form cleanly and the drink does not cool too quickly.\nWhy a stronger base survives the milk \nMilk mutes bitterness and softens acidity. That is what makes a milk drink comforting, and it is also why a mild coffee disappears into one. The L'OR base is dark and rounded, with more of the continental espresso about it than a gentle house blend, and in a glass that is mostly milk it leaves a real coffee flavour in the middle rather than a faint suggestion.\nThe label explains the sweetness. The published ingredients begin with cream from milk at 28%, roast and ground coffee at 27% and then sugar, so the milk disc arrives sweetened. Expect warm dairy first, then the roast rising through it, and a last mouthful that still tastes of coffee. It is a caffeinated drink; the carton gives any exact figure.\nKeeping the bands, hot or iced \nRun the milk disc first, then the espresso disc, and let the coffee fall into the centre of the glass rather than down the side. Served hot, the layers hold for a minute or two before they start to blur, so take the glass to the table promptly if anyone wants to see them.\nOver ice the bands last far longer. Fill the glass with ice, let the milk disc run over it and settle, then add the espresso. Against the L'Or Caramel Latte Macchiato, this is the version without caramel; against the Costa Latte, it is the layered macchiato build rather than a latte. All of them need a Tassimo, whose discs no other pod machine will take.\nThe packs we stock \n\nTassimo L'OR Latte Macchiato Coffee, 7 Pods (barcode 8711000545430)\n\nWhat the label says \nIngredients, as published: Cream (from Milk) (28%), Roast and Ground Coffee (27%), Sugar, Water, Milk Protein Concentrate, Milk Minerals, Salt, Thickener (E414), Acidity Regulator (E331), Flavouring (from Milk).\nTypical values per 100mlPer 100mlEnergy21 kcalFat1.1gof which saturates0.7gCarbohydrate2.7gof which sugars2.7gFibre0.1gProtein0.2gSalt0.09g\nIngredient and nutrition information for this product, as published on the manufacturer's label. Because the coffee is meant to run through milk already in the glass. Brew it the other way round and you get a latte, with no bands.\nWhy choose the L'OR version over a milder milk pod? Because the coffee has to survive the milk. The espresso-led L'OR base pushes through, where a mild one leaves you with sweet warm milk.\nIs it sweetened? Yes. Sugar is the third ingredient on the published list, after cream from milk and roast and ground coffee.\nHow long do the layers last? A minute or two in a hot glass, and noticeably longer over ice.\nDoes it contain caffeine? Yes. It is built on a caffeinated espresso base; for an exact figure, read the current carton.\nCurator's note: Warm the glass, milk first, coffee down the middle, then leave it alone for a moment. Of all the milk pods, this is the one where the coffee still gets a say.
