"excerpt": "Almost no tea is grown in Britain. What \"packed in the UK\", \"blended in Yorkshire\" and single-origin labels actually tell you about where your tea grew.",
"content_text": "Tea does not grow in Britain in any commercial quantity \u2014 the climate is wrong. A handful of small plantations exist in Cornwall and Scotland, and they are a curiosity rather than a supply. So when a packet says \"packed in Britain\", \"blended in Yorkshire\" or \"a British family firm\", it is telling you about the company and the factory, not the farm.\r\nThe leaf almost certainly grew in India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Malawi, China or Indonesia.\r\nWhat each phrase actually means\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nOn the pack\r\nWhat it tells you\r\nWhat it does not tell you\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nPacked in the UK\r\nWhere it went into the box\r\nWhere it was grown\r\n\r\n\r\nBlended in Yorkshire / Britain\r\nWhere the recipe was mixed\r\nWhere the leaf was grown\r\n\r\n\r\nProduct of India\r\nThe country the tea came from\r\nThe garden, the grade or the season\r\n\r\n\r\nSingle origin\r\nOne country, sometimes one region\r\nNecessarily one estate or one picking\r\n\r\n\r\nSingle estate\r\nOne named garden\r\nWhich flush or year, unless stated\r\n\r\n\r\nA protected origin, e.g. Darjeeling\r\nGrown and made in a defined area, certified\r\nThat you will like it\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nUK food labelling rules require the origin of a food to be given where its absence might mislead, which is why you will see \"packed in the UK\" in small print; it is not a claim about the leaf. GOV.UK: food labelling, what you must show\r\nWhy big brands blend from many countries\r\nAn everyday British blend is usually a mix of teas from several origins \u2014 commonly Assam for body, Kenyan for briskness and colour, Ceylon for brightness. The blender's job is to keep the taste the same year after year while crops and prices move, which means the recipe changes even when the box does not.\r\nYorkshire Tea is open about this: a Yorkshire family firm, blending tea grown elsewhere. The name is the company's home, not the leaf's.\r\nWhen origin genuinely matters\r\n\r\nProtected names. Darjeeling is certified by the Tea Board of India; tea sold as Darjeeling must come from the defined area.\r\nSingle-estate teas, where the garden, the flush and often the year are stated. That is what you pay for.\r\nTraceability, if you care about who grew it and under what conditions.\r\n\r\nFor everyday blends, the origin line matters far less than the freshness and the blend itself.\r\nHow to read a pack quickly\r\n\r\nFind the ingredients: \"black tea\" tells you nothing; named origins tell you more.\r\nFind the origin statement, usually in small print near the address.\r\nLook for a garden, region or flush if you want specificity.\r\nTreat \"British\" branding as a brand story, not a growing claim.\r\n\r\nMore on what names promise in why two teas with the same name taste different, and on what is worth paying for in how to judge tea quality.\r\nCommon questions\r\nIs any tea grown in Britain?\r\nA small amount, at boutique scale in Cornwall and Scotland. It is expensive and sold as a novelty rather than as everyday tea.\r\nIs Yorkshire Tea from Yorkshire?\r\nThe company is. The tea is grown abroad and blended in Harrogate.\r\nDoes \"product of India\" mean one garden?\r\nNo, only the country. It can still be a blend of many gardens.\r\nIs single origin better?\r\nDifferent, not better. Blends are built for consistency; single origins show you a place and a season.",
