Nescafé Dolce Gusto Americano: The Everyday Black Pod, in summary: One pod, one mug of black coffee, so thirty pods make thirty drinks. The capsule holds only roast and ground coffee, milk is your choice, and the fill line is the one setting worth adjusting.
Last reviewed by the teas.co.uk team in September 2026.
The only ingredient in a Dolce Gusto Americano capsule is roast and ground coffee. It is usually the box a Dolce Gusto household empties first, and with nothing else in the pod, the two choices left to you, the water and the milk, shape the whole cup.
A long black from a capsule
An Americano, in the café sense, is a short pressurised shot opened out with hot water until it fills a mug. The Dolce Gusto machine handles both halves for you: it forces hot water through the sealed capsule under pressure and halts at the capsule's marked line or whichever volume setting you have picked. The result is the size of a real mug of coffee rather than a thimble of espresso, and it arrives black.
Because the brew is high pressure, the cup carries a hazel crema that a filter machine rarely produces, and much of the aroma lives in it: toasted grain, cocoa and a slight nutty sweetness. It fades quickly. Press the button when you are ready to drink, rather than leaving the mug on the side while you do something else, and the cup tastes noticeably richer.
Setting the fill line
The capsule and the machine both mark a standard volume. It is a sensible starting point, but only a starting point. Stop earlier and you get a smaller, stronger, more bitter cup; let it run on and the body thins while the finish turns papery. Most people end up settling a step either way of the standard mark, so brew a few cups before deciding exactly where yours belongs.
Milk is the other decision, and it is entirely yours. With nothing in the pod but coffee, you can pour in fresh milk, cream, an oat drink or nothing at all, in whatever quantity suits you. A slightly shorter pour stands up better to milk, because the extra concentration keeps the toasted roast from disappearing underneath it.
How it fits the Dolce Gusto range
The milk drinks in the range, the cappuccinos, lattes and macchiatos, use two capsules for every cup, a milk pod and a coffee pod, so a box of sixteen makes eight. The Americano is one pod per mug. That is why it comes in a box of thirty, and why it is worth comparing boxes on servings rather than on the number of pods.
Against fixed milk drinks such as the Flat White or Café au Lait pods, the Americano is a blank black coffee that you adjust yourself. The capsules fit Nescafé Dolce Gusto machines only. They do not go in a Nespresso, Tassimo or Lavazza A Modo Mio brewer, and their capsules will not go in a Dolce Gusto either, so check the name on the front of your machine.
The packs we stock

Nescafe Dolce Gusto Americano Coffee (30 Servings), 30 Pods (barcode 8445290439451)

What the label says
The published ingredient list for Nescafe Dolce Gusto Americano Coffee (30 Servings), 30 Pods names none of the 14 major allergens. Check the current box of Americano pods before buying; Nescafé may change their recipe and allergen advice.
Ingredients, as published: Roast and ground coffee.
Ingredient and nutrition information for this product, as published on the manufacturer's label. Your box of Americano pods has the final say.
What to eat with it

McVitie's Digestives Milk Chocolate Biscuits, 433g: A black coffee with a toasted, cocoa edge meets milk chocolate halfway, and a digestive holds up to a quick dip.
Royal Dansk Danish Butter Cookies, 340g: Rich butter cookies soften a black mug without any milk going into it.
Border Dark Chocolate Ginger Organic Biscuits, 150g: Ginger warmth and dark chocolate stand up to the roast, which makes them the pairing for a shorter, stronger pour.

Elsewhere in the Nescafé range
Nescafe Azera Americano Decaff Instant Coffee, 90gNescafe Azera Americano Instant Coffee, 140gNescafe Azera Americano Intense Instant Coffee with Finely Ground Beans, 140gNescafe Azera Decaf Americano Instant Coffee with Finely Ground Beans, 135gNescafe Cappuccino Decaf Unsweetened Taste Instant Coffee Sachets, 7 Sachets 105gNescafe Cappuccino Instant Coffee, 7 Sachets
The full range is on the Nescafé brand page.
FAQ
How many coffees does a box of 30 pods make? Thirty. The Americano uses one capsule per mug, unlike the milk drinks in the range, which need two.
Is there milk in a Dolce Gusto Americano pod? No. The only ingredient listed is roast and ground coffee, so it brews black and you add milk if you want it.
Will these pods work in a Nespresso or Tassimo machine? No. They are made for Nescafé Dolce Gusto machines only, and no other capsule system takes them.
Why does my Americano taste thin? Usually too much water. Bring the fill level down a step and the body and roast come back.
Why does a pod Americano have crema? The machine brews at high pressure, which builds the hazel layer on top; a drip filter does not work that way.
Curator's note: Pull it a touch short of the line and drink it straight away, while the crema is still sitting on top. That is when it tastes its fullest.
