## Description

Loacker Classic Vanilla Wafers: Uncoated and Crisp, in summary: Loacker's Vanilla Classic is thin wafer sheets and a soft vanilla cream, uncoated. Crispness is the whole product, so seal it the day you open it, never dunk it, and serve it with black coffee or Earl Grey.
Last reviewed by the teas.co.uk team in September 2026.
With no coating and no decoration, the Vanilla Classic leaves a wafer nowhere to hide, and the first thing it gives you is a sound rather than a taste. Keep that shatter and you keep the product.
Soft vanilla, and a hazelnut surprise
Loacker says the cream in its Classic Vanilla uses Bourbon vanilla from Madagascar, and it reads as a gentle, rounded vanilla that leans towards custard rather than the sharpness of a baking essence. The sheets are nearly flavourless by design, with just a faint toasted-cereal note, so the cream carries the taste. Like every Classic, it is three crisp wafers around two layers of cream, cut into fingers.
The surprise is on the label. The published list for this barcode includes hazelnuts as well as wheat and barley (gluten), milk and soya; the may-contain warnings cover mustard, peanuts, sesame and almonds. A vanilla wafer is not a nut-free choice here. Coconut oil comes first on the list, ahead of even the wheat flour.
Keeping the crunch
A wafer does not go stale in the usual way; it goes limp, and a limp wafer is finished rather than slightly worse. There is no dense crumb to slow moisture down, so the thin, dry sheets draw water from the air quickly. Clip the pack tightly the day you open it, or move the fingers into a sealed tin, and keep them well away from the steamy corner by the kettle.
The upside of an uncoated wafer is that there is no chocolate to melt, bloom or mark your fingers, so it shrugs off a warm room that would spoil a coated bar. The pack also looks bigger than its 90g suggests, because wafer takes up far more space than the same weight of biscuit. That is simply the nature of wafer rather than generous packaging.
Bitter against sweet
A sweet cream filling needs bitterness beside it, which is why an espresso or a strong black coffee is the natural partner. For tea, Earl Grey is the best match, because the bergamot's citrus lift does the same job of cutting through the vanilla. A strong breakfast tea also works, brewed properly so it has body. Anything creamy or sweet, a latte or a hot chocolate, just piles softness on softness.
Of the three Loacker Classics we stock, Vanilla is the soft, custardy one. Napolitaner is the hazelnut one and the easiest with tea, and Double Chocolate, the louder wafer in the same format, is the one that wants black coffee. Loacker has baked in South Tyrol since 1925, when Alfons Loacker opened his bakehouse in Bolzano, and today its bakeries sit around a thousand metres up in the Alps.

FAQ
Do Loacker Vanilla wafers contain nuts? Yes. The published ingredient list for this barcode includes hazelnuts, and it may contain peanuts and almonds.
Will Loacker Vanilla wafers melt in a warm room? No. With no chocolate coating there is nothing to melt or bloom, so warmth will not spoil them, though damp air will soften them quickly.
Why have my wafers gone soft? They have taken moisture from the air. Once soft they will not crisp again, so seal the pack or use a tin as soon as it is open.
What tea goes with a vanilla wafer? Earl Grey, whose bergamot cuts the sweetness; a strong breakfast tea is the next best choice.
Is the vanilla real vanilla? Loacker says the Classic Vanilla cream uses Bourbon vanilla from Madagascar, and the published list includes Bourbon vanilla beans.
Curator's note: Open them, eat a few with a strong coffee, and clip the pack before you walk away. A soft wafer is a sad thing and entirely avoidable. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
