## Description

Kenco Gold Indulgence: The Instant Built for Milk, in summary: The fuller, darker jar in Kenco's Gold line, with enough roast weight to still taste of coffee under milk and sugar. Use water just off the boil, dissolve before the milk goes in, and keep the lid tight.
Last reviewed by the teas.co.uk team in September 2026.
In British kitchens instant usually goes into a mug with milk and often sugar, drunk while doing something else, and Gold Indulgence is made for that cup rather than a black one sipped slowly. Its extra body is the whole point: the coffee is still there to taste once the milk arrives.
Why a darker roast survives the milk
Every instant starts as real coffee that is roasted, brewed at scale and then dried. What separates one jar from another is mostly the roast that goes in and the way the water is taken out afterwards. A deeper roast builds more of the caramelised, bittersweet flavour that later reads as body in the mug. Kenco prints the drying method for this jar on its label, so that is the place to check it.
Taken black, Gold Indulgence is toasted with a faint cocoa edge and real weight in the middle, and its bitterness arrives first. Add a proper splash of milk and that bitterness turns into depth, where a lighter jar would thin out to little more than milky water. The trade makes it the jar for milk-and-sugar drinkers, and a heavier cup than some will want black.
Gold Indulgence beside Smooth and Rich
Kenco describes Smooth as freeze-dried instant blended with roast and ground coffee, and Rich as its bold, full-bodied cup. Gold Indulgence is the fullest jar in the Gold line: darker and heavier than Smooth, which drinks easily black. If you take coffee without milk, Smooth is the gentler pick. If milk is non-negotiable and lighter jars taste thin to you, this is the one to try.
Decaf is the jar for later in the day, and the sachet lattes are for places without a fridge. Think of Gold Indulgence as the kitchen jar for someone after more depth than ordinary instant gives, with no appetite for a grinder or a cafetiere. Nothing beyond the kettle is needed, and the fuller roast does the rest.
Water, order and a dry spoon
Give the kettle about thirty seconds after it clicks. At a full boil the water scorches the granules and leaves a bitter, burnt note that no amount of milk will cover. Then dissolve before the milk goes in: stir the coffee in hot water alone for a good five seconds, until nothing is left at the bottom. Grit in the last mouthful almost always means the water was too cool or the milk arrived too soon.
The jar itself needs one rule: keep it dry. Soluble coffee draws moisture out of the air, so a loose lid or a single damp teaspoon is enough to start the top of the jar setting into a solid block. Screw the lid down every time and use a rounded rather than a heaped teaspoon; measured that way, the 190g jar runs to around a hundred mugs.

FAQ
Does Kenco Gold Indulgence count as a strong instant coffee? It is fuller and darker than the lighter Kenco jars, with a toasted, faintly cocoa roast and some bitterness when taken black.
Should I drink it black or with milk? It is built for milk. Taken black it works too, only heavier than a light instant.
Why is there grit in the bottom of my mug? Undissolved granules. Use hotter water and stir until clear before adding milk.
Why has my jar set solid? Moisture has got in, usually from a damp spoon or a loose lid. Keep both dry and tight.
How does it compare with Kenco Smooth? Smooth is the lighter jar, easy to drink black; Gold Indulgence is heavier and holds its flavour under milk.
Curator's note: This is the eleven o'clock mug, milk and one sugar, drunk at the desk. Give it that job and it does it better than any lighter jar in the cupboard. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
