"content_text": "Clipper Organic Decaf Instant Coffee: reading the long name, in summary: Decaffeinated, organic and Fairtrade, from Latin American coffee: a soft, round instant, low in bitterness, that holds up with milk. A trace of caffeine remains, and a rounded spoon with water off the boil stops it tasting thin.\nLast reviewed by the teas.co.uk team in September 2026.\nDecaf is usually the afterthought of an instant coffee range; here Clipper has given it the same Fairtrade and organic credentials as its teas. Each word in the long name tells you something different, and one of them is widely misunderstood.\nUnpacking the name \nFairtrade and organic are separate promises. Fairtrade concerns the terms the growers are paid on, organic concerns how the crop is grown, and a product can hold one without the other; this jar holds both. The published ingredient line is simply coffee traded in compliance with Fairtrade standards, and the label names none of the 14 major allergens.\nLatin American means a blend of origins from that region rather than a single farm or country. East African coffees sit at the bright, almost tea-like end of the scale; this sits at the rounder, gentler end, with soft acidity. Clipper itself is best known as a Dorset tea company, and this jar is the one coffee among the Clipper lines we stock.\nDecaffeinated is not caffeine-free \nDecaffeination takes most of the caffeine out of the green bean before it is roasted, but never quite all of it, so every cup keeps a small residue. That makes it a sensible after-dinner mug for someone keeping caffeine down, but it is not the jar for anyone who needs to avoid caffeine entirely. If that applies to you, the pack is the place to start.\nThe process also removes some other soluble material from the bean, and more aroma is lost when brewed coffee is dried into granules. What makes it through is roast, a caramel note and a touch of nuttiness; the bright, floral notes are the first casualties. Starting from soft Latin American coffee and stopping at a mid roast is a sensible choice, since there is less to lose.\nGetting a fuller cup from the jar \nMost thin-tasting decaf is under-dosed or made with water straight off the boil, and a decaffeinated coffee has less in reserve to absorb either mistake. Use a rounded spoon, heaped if you take milk, and leave the boiled kettle for a minute, since water at about 90 degrees is kinder to the granules. The body then stands up to milk and a sugar without fading away.\nAt a level spoon the 100g jar gives about 55 cups, our own estimate from the weight rather than a brand figure; heap the spoon and it is nearer 40. Anyone switching from a dark, bitter instant should expect a softer cup. The bite they are used to is not here, and that is by design rather than a fault in the jar.\nThe packs we stock \n\nClipper Fairtrade Organic Decaf Latin American Instant Coffee, 100g (barcode 5021991939426)\n\nWhat the label says \nThe published ingredient list for Clipper Fairtrade Organic Decaf Latin American Instant Coffee, 100g names none of the 14 major allergens. No. Decaffeination removes most of the caffeine but leaves a trace, so it is not for anyone who must avoid caffeine completely.\nHow many cups are in a 100g jar? About 55 with a level spoon, by our reckoning from the weight, or nearer 40 if you heap it.\nWhy does my decaf coffee taste thin? Usually too little coffee or water that is too hot. Use a rounded spoon and water that has stood for a minute after boiling.\nWhat is the difference between Fairtrade and organic? Fairtrade covers the terms growers are paid on; organic covers how the coffee is grown. This jar is named for both.\nDoes it contain any allergens? No, according to the published ingredients, which name none of the 14 major allergens. Check the current pack, as formulations can change.\nCurator's note: Heap the spoon, add a splash of milk after dinner and do not expect the bite of a dark jar; its virtue is how quietly it sits at the end of the day.
