## Description

Blue Riband Vanilla White: The Wafer With No Bitterness, in summary: Four wafer layers around a vanilla flavoured filling, all under a white coating with no cocoa solids, so nothing tempers the sugar. Six wrapped bars of about fifteen grams; pour an Earl Grey or a strong unsweetened cup.
Last reviewed by the teas.co.uk team in September 2026.
The Vanilla White is the Blue Riband with nothing bitter in it, which is both its appeal and its limit. The answer is in the teapot: a cup with enough edge, ideally an Earl Grey, to meet all that vanilla.
Why the white coating tastes sweeter
Nestlé stacks four crisp wafer layers with a vanilla flavoured filling and finishes the bar in a smooth white coating. A white coating is made from cocoa butter, sugar and milk solids and leaves out the cocoa solids, which are where chocolate gets its bitterness. With nothing in the bar pulling against the sugar, it reads as vanilla and milk, and noticeably sweeter than the chocolate versions.
The wafer underneath adds little beyond crunch. It is mostly air, so rather than snapping or crumbling it simply shatters, and it is gone in about three bites, leaving a short finish. Anyone who already finds white chocolate too rich will feel the same about this bar. For everyone else, it is a very small treat to have with a cup, over before the break turns into a pudding.
Fifteen grams against eighteen
The box holds six individually wrapped bars and weighs 90g, so each bar is about fifteen grams. The Original six-pack weighs 108g for the same six bars, about eighteen grams each. Same number of wrappers, a little less bar. On the numbers alone the Original gives you more, and its chocolate flavour coating holds the sugar back a little. Choose the Vanilla White because you want white, which is a fair reason.
Those wrappers matter more here than on most biscuits. Few things are more fragile in a bag than a wafer bar, and wrapping each one separately is why six arrive whole rather than as crumbs. Nestlé lists wheat and milk for the Vanilla White and says it may contain nuts, peanuts and soya, so read the current pack if anyone eating it has an allergy.
Earl Grey, or something strong and plain
Vanilla gives this bar its best tea partner. An Earl Grey works because the bergamot plays against vanilla in a way it never quite does against cocoa. The alternative is a strong, unsweetened cup, black tea or black coffee, which has to supply the edge the bar lacks. A sweet drink alongside is simply sugar on sugar, with nothing to cut through it.
Do not dunk it. A bar this light and airy will not survive even a second in the mug. Keep the box somewhere cool and dry, as you would any coated bar, and take one out at a time. It is the Blue Riband for the afternoon cup and the pot of Earl Grey, where the Original is better suited to a brisk breakfast brew.

FAQ
Why is Blue Riband Vanilla White so sweet? Its white coating contains no cocoa solids, which is where chocolate's bitterness comes from, so nothing balances the sugar.
Why is the box lighter than the Original? Both hold six bars, but the Vanilla White box is 90g against 108g, so each bar is about fifteen grams rather than eighteen.
What tea goes with Blue Riband Vanilla White? Earl Grey, whose bergamot plays well against vanilla, or any strong tea drunk without sugar.
Should I buy the Vanilla White or the Original? The Original gives you a heavier bar and a chocolate flavour coating that reins in the sugar. Pick the Vanilla White when you specifically want white.
Can Vanilla White go in a nut-free lunchbox? Not without checking. Nestlé lists wheat and milk and says the bar may contain nuts, peanuts and soya, so read the current pack first.
Curator's note: Pour an Earl Grey, open one bar and let the vanilla and bergamot meet. It is a small pleasure and does not pretend to be anything bigger. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
