## Description

Bahlsen Choco Leibniz Milk Chocolate: the Leibniz explained, in summary: A slim, notched German butter biscuit set into a thick tablet of milk chocolate, 111g a pack. Eat it chocolate side down, keep it cool, and pour a milky coffee or a lighter tea rather than a strong brew.
Last reviewed by the teas.co.uk team in September 2026.
Bahlsen launched the Leibniz butter biscuit in Hannover in 1891 and first set it into a tablet of chocolate in 1973. The milk chocolate version is the one most people meet first, and it rewards knowing a little about how it is put together.
Forty-six teeth and a tablet of chocolate
Underneath sits the Leibniz, a butter biscuit with a fine crumb, thinner than a digestive, with a toothed edge that Bahlsen counts at forty-six teeth. It takes its name from Hannover's Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. The idea itself came from England: Bahlsen's first biscuits followed the factory-made English kind and were sold as Cakes until the company coined the word Keks in 1911.
Choco Leibniz sets that biscuit into a thick tablet of milk chocolate on one face, in what Bahlsen calls the golden ratio of chocolate to biscuit. Most British chocolate biscuits wear a thin coat; this one is closer to an even split, so it eats more like confectionery than a mug companion. The published list puts sugar first and wheat flour at 26%, with skimmed milk powder, butter and lactose.
Which way up to eat it
Turn it over. Eaten chocolate side down, the layer reaches the tongue first and the biscuit follows as a crisp, buttery floor, and the difference is bigger than you would expect. Biscuit side down, the crumb leads and the chocolate arrives as a finish. Try it both ways before settling on a favourite; the biscuit is identical, but the order changes the whole bite.
Keep it out of the mug. The Leibniz is baked fine and close, so tea barely gets in, while the heavy chocolate loosens and slides long before the crumb softens; almost any other biscuit in the tin will dunk better. Keep the pack somewhere cool: warmth takes the snap away, and a pale bloom on the surface, harmless but permanent, is the sign it has been kept too warm.
A lighter cup, not a builder's brew
Milk chocolate is sweet and creamy rather than cocoa-deep, and a strong builder's tea simply buries it. It sits better beside a milky coffee, a cappuccino or a latte, where milk meets milk, or next to a lighter black tea with some character of its own. An Earl Grey has enough bergamot to keep the chocolate company without drowning it, and a Lady Grey is the softer option.
Serve it on a plate rather than straight from the pack, one or two at a time. People often buy Choco Leibniz as a biscuit for the tea tray and end up eating it like a bar of chocolate, standing up in the kitchen, so decide which you want before the pack is opened. If you prefer a drier, less sweet finish, the dark version uses the same biscuit.

FAQ
What is a Leibniz biscuit? Bahlsen's butter biscuit, launched in 1891 and named after Hannover's Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, with a toothed edge the brand counts at forty-six teeth.
Should you eat Choco Leibniz chocolate side up or down? Try it chocolate side down. The chocolate reaches the tongue first and the biscuit follows, which makes a real difference to the bite.
Why has my Choco Leibniz gone pale? That is bloom, which forms when chocolate warms and sets again. It is harmless, but the gloss and snap do not return, so store the pack somewhere cool.
What tea goes with Choco Leibniz milk chocolate? A lighter black tea such as Earl Grey, or a milky coffee. A strong builder's brew overpowers it.
Does Choco Leibniz contain milk and wheat? Yes. The published ingredient list says it contains wheat (gluten) and milk.
Curator's note: Chocolate side down, a milky coffee beside it, and one at a time. It is closer to a bar of chocolate than a tin biscuit, and I would serve it that way. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
