Dry January, the British habit of giving up alcohol for the first month of the year, has become close to a mainstream tradition since Alcohol Change UK formalised it in 2013. The hard part isn't the early days; it's the established 7pm habit of pouring a drink. The cup of something warm slot is the easiest substitute, and a deliberate selection of evening friendly caffeine free teas turns it from a chore into a small ritual you might keep in February.

The Dry January Starter Pack is built specifically for that. Caffeine free, evening appropriate, varied enough that you don't drink the same thing every night, and substantial enough that it lasts the full month.

What's in the pack

A standard pack contains four to five teas, all caffeine free, in quantities that comfortably cover 31 evenings. Specific contents rotate slightly with what's in stock, but the brief stays the same:

A peppermint, the post dinner standby. Helps digestion, cooling, no caffeine. Usually Twinings Pure Peppermint or Pukka Three Mint.
A chamomile, the wind down cup, often blended with vanilla, honey or lavender for a more interesting cup than plain chamomile.
A rooibos, the South African shrub. Sweet, woody, not technically tea, naturally caffeine free. See our infusions guide.
A fruit blend, berry led, hibiscus led, or apple and cinnamon depending on stock. The "dessert" cup.
A spiced blend, turmeric, ginger, lemon and ginger, or a caffeine free chai. The interesting one in the box.

If you have a strong preference (love peppermint, hate hibiscus), email us via contact after ordering and we'll customise the pack at no extra cost.

Why caffeine free matters for the evening swap

If you're replacing a 7pm glass of wine with a cup of strong black tea, you'll have caffeine disrupted sleep within a fortnight, and you'll quietly conclude that "Dry January doesn't suit me" when actually it's the substitute that's working against you. Caffeine free is the right choice for any cup taken after about 4pm.

For why decaf isn't the same as caffeine free, see our decaf guide. Decaf still contains 2,10mg of caffeine per cup; herbal infusions and rooibos contain none.

Brewing for the evening cup

Quick reference, herbal infusions are different from tea (see our infusions guide for the detail):

Water: 95,100°C (full boiling, no risk of bitterness with herbals).
Time: 5,10 minutes. Some blends benefit from 15.
Cover the mug while it steeps, many herbal aromatics are volatile.
Add honey if you want, honey suits chamomile, lemon, ginger.

Beyond January

The pack is designed for the month, but most of what's in it earns a permanent place on a shelf. The peppermint stays useful all year (after rich meals especially). The chamomile becomes a sleep cup. The rooibos becomes a decaf coffee substitute for some people. If you find your favourites, the same individual products are available year round in our herbal range.

Pricing

Around £18,24 depending on the specific contents that month. Genuinely below the sum of parts price. Free UK delivery on orders over £35, pair with a full caffeine tea or a couple of biscuit packs to qualify.

Dry January is also a useful moment for our winter taster pack, same caffeine free emphasis with more variety.

Want to actually use this?
